Physics 12 Core Competency Reflection

In Physics 12, I have developed my critical thinking skills, demonstrated by the following explanation for the use of Clothoid Loops in roller coaster rides. Understanding this complex concept and explaining its components in a personally meaningful way shows my ability to apply physics concepts to the real world while also highlighting my reflective and analytical core competencies.

Our poster has movable flaps!

Hidden behind my drawings of the animated characters are my partner’s drawings of the characters’ voice actors and descriptions of the main characters of the classic Disney film, as seen below.

Core Competency Reflection

I compile and synthesize information to draw reasoned conclusions, such as when…I used WordReference to find some new vocabulary for the written portions of the poster. WordReference is a very useful tool, as it provides translations for words or phrases is different contexts; this is very helpful, but also requires the user to critically think and find the meaning that they intend. For example, I wanted to find the French word for “witch” when writing the summary of the film. The online dictionary gave me multiple translations, from which I needed to draw reasonable conclusions that “sorcière” is the best translation for my purposes.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is…when collaborating with my partner on making the title letters of our poster. My project partner, Gwen, brought the idea of writing out the letters for our title, “La belle et la bête,” on plain paper and cutting and pasting them onto the poster to make the title stand out. I liked the idea, and to build off of hers I suggested that we outline the letters with black fineliner to make the yellow letters stand out more. She implemented my idea into this part of the project, and we are both happy with the final result of this collaboration.

Moving forward, my goal is to in improve in “show[ing] others that I truly value their contributions by” verbally and non-verbally expressing my appreciation. I want to make it more clear to others that I value their efforts, opinions, and contributions to group projects, so that everyone feels seen and appreciated. Reflecting on this project, I think I can make this more clear by telling others “thank you” or even through facial expressions of gratitude and caring.

Overall, this project not only helped my French language proficiency on the subject of cultural pastimes, but also gave me a chance to further develop my Core Competencies of critical thinking and collaboration, while also helping me identify personal goals to grow.

Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment

Competency: Thinking

Before

After

This artifact shows my third project in the Textiles course, where I altered a dress I already had to better fit my body and style. I demonstrated critical thinking by analyzing the fabric I already had as part of the dress and creative thinking of how to use that fabric for the alterations I wanted.

I shortened the dress by cutting off a section of the bottom and hemming using cover-stitch, then using the cut-off portion to create the off-the-shoulder sleeves that I intended. A problem arose, however, when I realized that there was not enough fabric to use it the way I initially planned. I communicated my concerns with the teacher, who gave me a few suggestions. From there, I demonstrated thinking skills in taking the feedback and creatively applying it to my project, which resulted in a final product that I am very happy with.

Self-Assessment on the Core Competencies Demonstrated Through the Fetal Pig Dissection in Anatomy and Physiology 12

By Joanne Kim, for Anatomy and Physiology 12 (Period 1) Core Competency Self-Assessment

Close up image of the internal region of the throat and upper thoracic cavity. Directly under the gloved hand are the lungs and heart; blue-spotted organ on the left-most side of the image shows part of the liver; superior to the hand are the thymus, thyroid glands, larynx, trachea, and various blood vessels, among other structures.

This activity of dissecting a fetal pig in the digestion unit demonstrated my ability to utilize the core competencies through communication, critical thinking, and personal identity.

In our digestive system unit in Anatomy and Physiology 12, we dissected fetal pigs in partners. Following the nature of partner work, this activity required constant communication with my peers, such as delegating tasks and roles with my partner and collaborating with other groups to identify male/female structures of the different pigs. However, this dissection also required much guidance from the teacher.

The dissection and accompanying identification of structures was done by labeling important organs with pins. This was assessed by the teacher at various points, and after each assessment corrections or improvements had to be made. I used critical thinking to analyze why certain identifications were incorrect, and again to determine what then was the correct answer. I took feedback to improve my skills and understanding, which then applied to my personal life.

Apart from the practical dissection, this activity also led to growth in my personal identity. Through the various parts of analyzing the structures of the pig to learning about the associated physiology, I became more aware of how much I enjoyed the entire process. This realization led me to be further motivated to pursue post-secondary education in a science field, particularly into biology. My vocational aspiration to become a physician was also strengthened, especially in the consideration of becoming a surgeon with my enjoyment of the physical dissection and personal hobby of sewing.

Overall, the fetal pig dissection was a significant experience in Anatomy and Physiology 12 that helped demonstrate and develop my communication, thinking, and personal/social competencies, skills that will be essential in all future educational, career, and life applications.

Chemistry 12 Core Competency Self Assessment

Core Competency: Communication and Collaboration

I demonstrated collaboration and communication in this course through labs, such as the Lab 19C shown in the image on the right.

Since labs are always conducted in pairs, I have developed my collaboration skills as I work together with my partner for our lab to be successful. For example, we have started delegating specific roles or responsibilities for certain parts of labs, such as who gets which materials or each person taking charge of measuring a different reagent.

I have also improved my communication skills through lab assignments such as discussion questions or lab conclusions. Through these assignments, I have practiced and received feedback on improving my effective communication, as to deliver my ideas more clearly and concisely.

Overall, Chemistry 12 has been a fun course where I have expanded my understanding of chemistry while also learning to be a more successful student by improving on my core competencies in collaboration and communication.
