Graphing a Parabola

Significant Values in my Equation

The significant values in my equation are K, H, and A

The K value determines where on the y-axis my parabola will be shifted, for example in my equation my K value is -3 so I know my parabola will be 3 units below the x-axis. K is representative of the vertical shift of the parabola, if I had a positive 3, for example, I would move above the x-axis. This means that my parabola will open at -3, somewhere along the x-axis.

The A value in my equation will tell me which way my parabola will open and how the number representing the A value affects how my parabola looks. In my parabola my A value is a positive 1, which means my parabola will open upwards towards the positive numbers of the graph. But that’s not all, the A value can also affect your width. When a parabola has a large and positive A value the parabola is narrow and facing upwards; so when you have a smaller positive number the parabola is wider and up-facing. Also, when the A value is negative the widths of the values stay the same, but the direction in which they open changes to a down-facing parabola. In my parabola, the A value is a fraction (1/3) which is under one so using what we learned in class I know that my parabola is going to be wider than someone who has an A value of 2 or 3.

The H value shifts the parabola from left to right along the horizontal axis. If your H value is negative it will shift to the left, whereas if it’s positive it will shift to the right. But remember, the H value changes as you take it out of the brackets; lets say it was negative inside the brackets but as you take it out of the brackets it becomes a positive. This is a lot like my parabola, where the H value is positive inside but comes out as a negative 1, which shifts my whole parabola to the left.

Self-Assessment

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways?

I showed both the simple parabola and my own parabola side by side in a photo with both equations labelled. I also used mathematical words and terms that where used in class to get my point across.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

Any of the three paragraphs above are evidence of my mathematical vocabulary that was used in class.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

For this assignment, I utilised demos to help me visually graph my parabola.   My parabola was plotted next to the original y=x^2 parabola, so I  was able to distinguish the two. With this method, I was able to see the two graphs, which benefited me in comprehending the math.  Additionally, I had to clarify my parabola, so I explained and showed my understanding for the various values. This also showed that I recognize what the variables stand for and how they are used in each equation. I also showed I am also able to recognize how each value effects the points on the graph.

Identity

My Poem

bloody heels in the air

head in the water

not drowning but restricted

only able to watch, one after another

ill, upset, or plagued with problems

focus, they need it

so, keep quiet

or don’t

and have your head in the air

feet in the sand

and sun on your face

Core Competency Reflection

I can take the information we learned about identity by conveying mine in an artistic and creative way, such as in the poem above. I can also generate ideas that help the creative process and keep going when one idea doesn’t work out. Such as during this poem writing I had a few drafts before I found the right words and structure to use. I can accept setbacks and failures, I had many drafts before I even came to this idea and was frustrated but eventually I can to the new concept.

Core Competency Goals

  • If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to – find some sort of common ground among us and resolve the issue. I find it much easier to resolve an issue with a compromise rather than a settlement. I plan on using this strategy as a problem solving technique this year anytime I have group work.
  • I can put myself out there if it mean getting work done – If I am ever group with quieter people or an awkward group, I can step up and put myself out there. It would be easier to work if one person is being louder, and if no one else steps up I am willing to be that student.
  • I understand others ideas and connect with them – I find it easier to see others ideas from their perspectives and add them to our work. It makes much more harmonious work if everyone is can work on the same level and brain wave. I will try and implement this to more of my group work this year by opening up about my idea and asking others about theirs.

Personal Health and Awareness

Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include stepping back and taking a break when I feel I need it. I can also do this when I’m feeling burnt out or tired of everything; this is when I know I need a break or a step back from everything to regroup. Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle encompass doing sports as well as finding a creative outlet that I enjoy. Another way I keep myself healthy is by keeping a healthy diet; eating right is a good way for me to stay happy and in a good mode throughout the day.

Core Competency Self Assessment

Thinking

I demonstrate the ability to problem-solve and think critically about math and science problems. I can analyze information and what the question is asking me while thinking about my answer. Doing the conclusion allows me to reflect on my own thinking as well as the facts, which I think is important to note. A skill I gained from this activity was asking open-ended questions to gain valuable information. Another helpful thing was my budding ability to think critically about my answer and if it was correct or not based on the information I had learned in class. Being able to complete my thoughts and bring them to a close at the end of my labs, allows me to fully explain what I think and how much I’ve learned from the lab.

This is my artifact from my titration lab where I could fully explain and interpret how I took the information given to me. This conclusion was one of the ones I believe I did the best on because I enjoyed the lab. It was the kind of lab where you could make mistakes on and then build from them, which was something I could tie into my conclusion.

Japanese Internment Paragraph core competencies self assessment

Having the Japanese in resettlement camps is our government’s way of making us white Canadians feel safe. I believe that this issue is mind over matter. Yes, you and I might feel safer with the Japanese people that live here away from you, but many of them are just as scared as the rest of us. I think monitoring them from a distance would suffice, instead of moving them away from their friends and possibly white family members.

I fully understand that the government has the intention to keep us safe. But the children teenagers and innocent adult Japanese citizens of this country want and need to be safe as well. Our government needs to keep them in their homes and the places they feel the most comfortable. However scared we as white Canadians get, the Japanese are probably ten times more scared. Imagine your home country threatening war on the place you call home. The shame they must feel for something they can’t control is astronomical; and though we refer to them as Japanese people, many of them are Canadians like you and I. They deserve the same respect of their homes and families as much as any other Canadian in the country.

Core competency

  • I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.
  •    I worked with others to achieve a goal.
  • I now understand that my identity is made up of many interconnected elements of Japanese-Canadian internment.
  •    I now understand what is important to me and I can explain my values.
  •   I now understand and can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems effectively and responsibly.
  •   I did analyze evidence from the research I did and made judgements.
  •    I can now understand and tell, after examining the facts of the possible threat from Japanese-Canadians in Canada and the opinions of various people, the difference between fact and opinion.

Curricular Competency

  • I did assess, understood and explained the significance of the threat of the Japanese army and its treatment of people it conquered, in British Columbia, in my research handout and paragraph.
  • I did assess and explained the significance of Canadian treatment of Japanese-Canadians on Canada’s present day views of equality and status under the law in my research handout.
  • I did assess and explained the justification for different views of Japanese-Canadian internment in my research handout and paragraph.
  • I did analyze evidence from the research I did and made judgements.
  • I did assess and explained the changes the non-Japanese-Canadians went through in my research handout.
  • I made an ethical judgement about the action of internment the Japanese-Canadians in my paragraph.

Media Fluency Reflection

How was the ease of access in building your flipbook, despite this being the free and limited version of the software?

I found at first it was difficult to use but after a while I started to understand how to use the program better. I do still find some things are difficult to use and that some things are very slow.

Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?

I found that writing down the information I gathered on each person before hand set me up well for the writing part. I didn’t end up making a rough draft of my cards but I think writing down the information was enough to get me started.

What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” American Revolution flipbook?

I used many different sources for information on each person I researched.

Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Did you use another software instead? Explain.

I don’t think there was another site online that would have done a better job because I think the end result of Flipsnack was very nice. But I think desk top power point would be easier and might make the flip book a bit more interesting. Also if I where to do this again I might try to find another site instead of Flipsnack.

About Me

My Bio

Hi my name is Kaitlan

I’m a grade 9 centennial student, soccer player, and gymnast. Some words I would use to describe my personality are witty, realistic, and curious. Some important things you need to know about me are I enjoy listening to music and normally have head phones in. I also love watching movies and reading books, (Jules Verne is my favorite author). My best class is science and a class I need to work on is social studies. I learn best when I write things down and review them. I have difficulty trying to connect with others and opening up to others, but this is something I’m trying to get better at this year.

My Favorite Website

https://ww6.readblackclover.com/

https://www.youtube.com/

My two favorite website are YouTube and readblackclover.com, because these websites have things that entertain me. For example on YouTube I could look up video’s to make me laugh, or to help me in school, as well as to keep up with the new or watch short play by plays. Readblackclover.com is entertaining because I can read one of my favorite on going manga’s there, which could keep me reading for hours.(also it’s free to read.)

My Favorite Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi53_jiRIks

This video is a bunch of highlights of best goals and plays made by Dybala, it shows skills you need to play at that level as well as skills I can work towards at this point. It also shows the best of one of my favorite players to watch. (At 2:33 I hope to get a goal in soccer that way this year.)

My Favorite Image

This picture is meaningful to me because I had scored the first goal of the season, as well as the first time I felt completely comfortable on my team. This picture always reassures me it’s ok to celebrate after a goal because the team will be happy too. so don’t be afraid to be happy about scoring.

My Favorite Quote

Those who do not understand true pain can never understand true peace. ― Nagato Uzumaki

I chose this quote because it shows even if you’ve been through pain you can find peace in the end, as well as come to terms with yourself. This quote also show that people who have gone through rough patches can still understand happiness, even if it’s dark where they are now. Hence why I chose this quote.
