Core Competency Goals

How Do You Learn Best?

The best way for me to learn is when I’m with peers my age. For me, it can be difficult to understand when I ask adults questions, so I am grateful to have friends around who can assist me. Also, as someone who can get very stressed out, I can usually benefit from listening to music while working I keep getting distracted.

How Do You Show That You Are Listening Thoughtfully? In What Ways Does Your Listening Contribute To Your Understanding?

When I’m listening to someone, I’ll try my best to keep looking at them. I can sometimes zone out, so keeping someone’s face in my head will keep me focused. Well, it’s easier than if I’m just hearing somebody talking without a person to connect it to. I contribute by writing things down a teacher or classmate says during the lesson. I’ll also ask questions if I don’t understand or to get clarification to show I’m paying attention.

When I Need To Boost My Mood Or Re-focus, I…

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I will take a step back from whatever I’m working on currently. I may just sit quietly at my desk until I can come back to my assessment or I’ll ask to go for a walk around the school. Both of these things can help chill me out if I can’t seem to connect to my assignment properly.

Why Japanese?

What Inspired You To Learn Japanese?

I’ve always wanted to learn another language and I’ve done French every year I’ve been in school, but it was never for me. I had difficulty connecting to anything to do with the language, so when I saw there was a Japanese class I decided to join.

What Do You Hope To Do With Your New Language Skills?

I feel that I will continue Japanese after I finish high school, it would definitely help with communicating with many more people as I grow up. I’d love to be fluent in two languages.

How Will You Keep Yourself Motivated Through This Course?

I will keep myself motivated by scheduling a time each night to study my work. Also, by making sure I’m not pushing myself too hard when I study Japanese so that I can enjoy myself during class.

What Will You Do If You’re Struggling?

It’s always been hard for me to admit if I’m struggling in school, but the easiest thing for me to do is ask a teacher or a friend if I don’t understand what I’m working on. (I am improving on that.)
