Making and Sharing Reflection

EQUIPMENT

in this recipe, we were required to use a pastry blender. Pastry blenders are useful when combining the ingredients in a recipe for any kind of baked good which should have flakey layers. A pastry blender is a handheld tool with narrow strips of metal which curve to attach to either end of the handle. These tools are used to incorporate any kind of hardened fat into a flour mixture without fully incorporating the fat. This method of incorporating ingredients is to help create that easy separation of layers in a pastry. The tool is used similarly to the way you might use a potato masher, up and down motions, slowly separating the chunks of fat into the flour. This tool allows the fat to sit in chunks in the dough as opposed to being melted into the dough as it’s being mixed.

PRODUCT

The recipe turned out absolutely amazing. The scones were cooked to perfection. With a little jam and some butter spread on them they were nothing short of delicious. They had those perfect flakey layers thanks to the pastry blender. They were easy to make and not hard to clean up. They were perfectly golden brown and had just a hint of sweetness. My family enjoyed them very much and I will surely make them again.

Core Competency Reflection

· While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding by…

During cooking labs, I frequently ask questions when I am unsure or need clarification on a specific instruction. I refer to my peers for help and talk with my table group to address and resolve collective issues. I ask teachers for help when I need it and pay close attention to teacher instruction and demonstrations.

· One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to…

Before beginning any cooking, I sit with my group, and we ensure that we all have the same understanding. We evenly distribute jobs around the Table group and decide who is in charge of what during preparation of that food as well as cleanup. Before beginning each lab, we are sure to check that everyone understands their role in the kitchen and how they are going to go about fulfilling that role.

Goal

· If the group is not productive, we can …. in order to get things moving in the right direction.

One goal that I have moving forward is to work on being more productive and using my time more wisely. I find that both individually and I a group we have a bit of struggle with using class time wisely and prioritizing our productivity. Moving forward I will try and be more aware and take the time to notice when my group and I are getting off task and remind everyone to focus on their work. I think it would be massively beneficial.
