Core Competencies Self Assessment – Titration Lab

CollaboratingI can apply constructive strategies to navigate misunderstandings and conflicts.

Final Result of Sadie and my titration lab.

I demonstrated communication and created strategies to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts during our titration lab through swapping roles and providing feedback. During my partner’s and my first titration trial, she was responsible for dropping the acid into the base, and I was responsible for mixing the solution. She quickly added to the solution, and seemed to slip, which caused too much base, ruining our trial. We both agreed that we should switch roles, as I had a steadier hand. Neither of us got offended or upset about the role swap, as we both communicated clearly and agreed that it would allow us to be more successful. After the switch, our second, third and fourth trials were complete, and our solutions were titrated correctly. Throughout the lab, Sadie and I communicated with each other, agreeing when to add acid and when to stop, making sure we were on the same page. I also feel that because Sadie and I are friends outside of class, we can take criticism and suggestions from each other during labs without getting hurt or offended, which makes us the perfect lab partners!

Core Competency Assessment

Core Competency – Collaboration

I chose collaboration for my core competency because it was an important tool in this assignment. In order for our Rube Goldberg machine to run smoothly, my group and I all had to collaborate and contribute. We all gave each other ideas to improve our machine, as well as giving each other feedback and thoughts

Refection

Overall, the design process went quite well. On the first day, we had a solid idea of what we wanted to do for our machine. After a couple of test runs and trial and error, we figured out what worked well and what did not. Some things that worked well on that first day were using the car and the launcher. The launcher gave the car lots of speed, and the weight of the car was enough to set off the rest of the reaction. I was away for two of the building days, but my group members kept me informed of what was happening, and they made sure to create a strong machine. They overcame that challenge very well, and we are all very proud of the result.

End Result

At the beginning of the experiment, we wanted the marble to fall into a cup from a domino knocking it over. However, the table we were working on had a slight slant, which disrupted the path of the marble. We ended up changing that so the marble would roll into one of our group members’ hands so he could throw it into a hoop.

Project Differently

If I were to repeat this project, I would not do much differently. I regret missing two of our workdays, as it set my group back slightly, and it was difficult for me to contribute my ideas. Overall, I think a bit more planning and a better rough draft would have benefited my group, but in the end, I am proud of our result.

Spanish 10 Core Competency Reflection

CommunicationCC

Musical Protest assignment with Aleesha, on the song La Vida es un Carnival by Celia Cruz.

During the musical protest assignment, effective communication was crucial. Working with Aleesha, we had to communicate and talk with each other in order to have a successful presentation. Some strategies we used to navigate our goals were compromising and sharing the work evenly. By doing this, we felt that the workload was much lighter, and we each contributed to the project with hard work and effort. I am very proud of how our communicative skills allowed us to have a smooth presentation and receive a good mark. Another reason I enjoyed this project was that it was easy to collaborate with Aleesha, as we both have similar ideas. This made it fun to design and come up with new ideas to improve our presentation.

CPR Reflection

What was something you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?

I learned the importance of CPR and the physical toll it takes on your body. The importance of CPR can save a life if done correctly, and it is a good skill to know. It can also be very tiring after performing it for a long period of time.

What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?

The key takeaway from the CPR unit is understanding the different signs of stroke or cardiac arrest. This is key because you can help save someone’s life if you notice they are showing signs of struggle.

How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?

The nutrition unit ties into the CPR unit because healthy choices can help prevent many of the issues that require CPR. Eating healthy foods and staying active can decrease your chances of heart attacks and strokes.

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicated clearly and purposefully can be seen when I did the physical exam. I was very confident, and I made sure to communicate during the CPR procedure. I think that communication is key during this unit because you have to talk with your classmates to ‘save a life’.

In this unit, I am proud that I accomplished a perfect score on my written exam. By studying and quizzing myself, as well as paying attention in class, I was able to remember most of the information needed for the test.

One area of CPR in which I’d like to spend more time learning is on heart attack and stroke. I would like to learn more about this because it is good to know about the signals in case a family member or friend experiences it.

Career Project

Curricular Reflection

During the Career and Life Education 10 class, I developed a good idea of what I would like to do with my career in the future. My goal to become a pediatric nurse requires lots of hard work and dedication. I have grown during this course because I am now aware of the requirements and necessary steps to apply to various post-secondary institutes. I think that will be very helpful in the future because as I complete my final years of school, I am aware of the courses I must take in order to reach my career goals. My initial plan for my career pathway has shifted drastically compared to the beginning of the course, which shows the importance of CLE.

Core Competency Reflection

I can gather and combine new evidence with what I already know to develop reasoned conclusions, judgments, or plans.

I chose this one because I am able to contain information that I have learned independently or what I have acquired from others. This allows me to research and find new information to build onto what I already know.

I can develop a body of creative work overtime in an area of interest or passion.

I chose this one because when I feel passionate about something, I look forward to working on it. This means I can create a very well thought and nicely presented project. This was shown when I created my presentation because I put a lot of work and time into it and had an overall successful outcome.

In familiar settings, I can interact with others and my surroundings respectfully.

When I am in a familiar setting, I am able to connect with my peers and build relationships, therefore getting better ideas from one another. This is valuable during projects because it is important to get different points of view on work.

In familiar settings, I communicate with peers and adults.

I chose this because when I am able to connect with peers and adults, they can help to guide me through any questions I may have. By asking questions I can do my project and meet all criteria.

Math 10 Core Competency Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

I want to celebrate my accomplishments such as figuring out how to confidently solve my math questions, so I will plan to recognize my achievements and move forward with this same mindset. A unit of which I am the most proud of was the trigonometry unit because I struggled with it, but I found extra help and ended up with a good mark on my test. By pushing through and not giving up I proved to myself that I am able to learn difficult units. By showing pride on this unit I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Grade 10 Goals

This year I will advocate for my needs by asking for teacher assistance when needed. This means asking questions when I am stuck or unsure of an answer

By being friendly and openminded in the classroom, I hope to make a positive difference to my peers.

Cupcake Print Ad Reflection

Reflection

For my Cupcake Creation print lab assignment, I used the website Canva. I chose Canva because I am already familiar with the website and the functions. Some features that I like about the website are the various stickers and cute images that I can add to my project. They have a wide variety of almost anything I can think of, and they were easy to add to my project. Another feature that I like about Canva is the home page. It is very nicely set up and makes it easy to access my projects. A feature that I dislike about Canva is the premium option. It makes it annoying because there are some images/add ins that I enjoy, but I can not because I would have to pay for them. Some challenges that Roen and I had while deciding our ingredients, was making sure we did not make our cupcakes too expensive. We made sure to only use necessary ingredients to cut the cost and make our cupcakes affordable. I think our print ad is effective because it is cute and has bright colours. We made sure to use bright colours because they are eye catching and our target audience is younger people, and younger people typically enjoy bright colours. We also used a sale technique in order to sell more. Three core competencies that I demonstrated during this assignment are I take on roles and responsibilities in a group, I do my share, I find it easy to be part of a group and I can reflect on my thinking.

ADL Social Studies- Ethical Judgement

Reflection Questions- Is violence ever justified during a revolution/ protest?

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project

  • During my ethical judgement project, we used Perplexity AI to help assist us. I used it to help find informative links with reliable information, as well as strong topics to speak about. I think it was very useful and helped save me lots of time

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI

  • I ensured that the work I created was my own by reading various articles and summarizing them. I found Perplexity helped me find the websites, but I was better off on my own when creating the script and information.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

  • I agree with the argument of this project. This is because there is violence all over the world, past and present which is not discussed often. This argument allowed me to view both sides of the topic to create an educated and accurate argument.

Core Competency Reflection

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to review the requirements of the project. I find that this is helpful because it ensures that both my partner and I are clear on what we have to do to be successful.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I try to have conversations with them and joke around a bit. I think that my joking around, such as making jokes, you can develop a closer relationship with the person. I think that when you have a strong relationship with someone, it is easier to do group work with them, because you already know how they think and their input.

My First Year

My grade 9 year has been challenging yet rewarding. Before starting my first year of high school, I was super exited for all the new things to come, and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed meeting new people and creating new connections, as well as all the sports and opportunities the school had to offer. I took advantage of the athletics and played on the Senior Volleyball team. I had so much fun playing with the older girls, including my sister, and I feel I grew a lot as a player. During my first semester, I found school fairly easy as my courses where not too challenging, but my second semester has been more of a struggle. I have noticed that there is not as much work that I was expecting, but much more than previous years. Although those points challenge me, I still have had a positive experience at Centennial and I am exited for my next three years!

Desmos | Scientific Calculator

The reason I chose this website is it was extremely helpful during Math. During semester one, my math teacher allowed us to use the website Desmos. This website allows you to type in complicated math questions, including graphing, and it will give you an accurate answer. I found it very helpful when I was struggling with tricky math equations, and I liked how diverse it was. I think I found it it the most useful during my graphing unit because that was the most challenging for me, and Desmos allowed me to understand it better.

The reason I chose this video is because it helped me learn my Spanish alphabet. This was my first quiz during Spanish 9, and this video helped me prepare for it. I liked the song and the little dog named Cosmo.

I chose this image is because it was my favourite meal I made during Food Studies 10. The photo above displays Chicken Souvlaki, Greek Rice, homemade Tzatziki and some Cherry Tomatoes. I made this meal during semester one with my foods group. It was fun to make and it tasted amazing!

The reason I chose this quote is Dr Seuss was a big part of my childhood, and his quotes are very wise. In this quote, he is saying that the more education that you have, the farther in life you can go. I like this quote because it encourage people to succeed in school and have a bright future.
