SOCIAL STUDIES CORE COMPETENCY REFLECTION – COMMUNICATION
I can understand and share basic information about topics and participate in conversations. I can work with my classmates to achieve a short-term goal, and I do my share of the work. I demonstrate that I can complete my share of the work during not only our Canadian aid assignment but the historical figure one as well. While working with peers, I strive to reach out, collect ideas, and overall communicate with my peers to form bigger theories and ideas. I often add my own beliefs and thoughts to discussions to help my group members. I am also able to help some of my friends/classmates when they need assistance on an assignment or a question. I always give respect to those who speak to me and always try to make an effort to branch out with ideas. It was important for both group projects that I communicated with both of my partners so we wouldn’t end up handing anything in late or messing up somewhere.
There are quite a few examples found within the literature that describe the character of Mooch. It is clear that Mooch is a complex character to understand. To begin, Mooch’s actions often show a willingness to prioritize personal gain, even if it hurts others. Mooch shows this selfish behavior as he’s always asking Floyd for an extra sandwich or extra beer. Mooch is also constantly stealing from June’s money jar for a beer or to bet on beavers. “Mooch was always the first one to offer a helping hand, but when the time came, he was nowhere to be found – his loyalty was as shallow as the promises he made”. Mooch has a very pushy personality. This tendency is shown throughout the story as he’s always interrupting to say something or ask for something. However, despite his flaws, Mooch’s personal struggles hint at a deeper need for belonging and acceptance. Mooch’s past has been revealed to be troublesome. Mooch has gone through many trials in his life, from residential schools to deaths of loved ones. Mooch seems to be looking for an end goal or maybe even a place to call home or even somebody to call home, but throughout the story we get a sense that mooch is this kind of good for nothing drunk, when is reality there’s layers to him that don’t get revealed till later in the literature. “He looked out at the world, yearning for a place to call his own, but could never quite find the courage to step into it”. Finally, Mooch’s relationships are often damaged due to his self-serving tendencies and manipulative nature. As mentioned before, Mooch tends to do certain things to benefit himself even at the cost of others feelings. As a result of this negative trait, he is constantly damaging his relationship with his closest friends. “Mooch always knew the right words to say, but somehow, even in his closest moments with others, there was a distance—an invisible wall he kept up to protect his own interests.” Before anna passed away mooch and her were arguing to the bitter end, Floyd and mooch tend to verbally and occasionally even have physical disputes. He is constantly fighting and stealing with his own girlfriend, June, eventually leading to a breakup. Mooch is always at the center of a dispute and is constantly creating negative encounters with his peers, leading to his relationships being torn. To conclude it is evident from the information provided that Mooch is a complex character to fully understand.
During this write I used communication by asking questions and helping people with questions. I was eager to ask questions and was engaged with the write and communicating with peers. I demonstrated thinking core competency by being 100% engaged I used the textbook and other worksheets to thoroughly work through it and i got one of the better marks on my write. I used personal responsibility by using my lunch time to complete the write, I also knew when too many questions was to much and learned to try and tackle them on my own. And I did pretty good. Reflectively if I studied my vocab better I definitely could have written more because I was enjoying writing if I wasn’t stopped by looking stuff up in my binder/textbook.
Grilled cheese is a crispy golden brown grilled sand that is cheesy, gooey, and melts in your mouth. When making an abstract grilled cheese, timing is very important. You must have everything ready when assembling the sandbox. This was a difficulty for me, but it worked out in the end. I made a spinach gouda grilled cheese; additionally, I added some meats like bacon and ham. I also added some onions, which really added great flavor. Overall, it was delicious. I minced my onion because I liked the flavor, but I would rather not bite into a chunk of it. For my spinach, I chopped it and sautéed it. My bacon was cooked to a perfect crispy-to-soft ratio. I personally grilled both sides of the bread, then added all the ingredients. but I think that my grilled cheese could be more fluffy as a whole. I really squished it down, which was a downfall of mine. I would definitely not squish it down next time. *****
Making And Sharing Reflection
During this lab, I was fully active and was prepared to cook my own grilled cheese. my recipe made sense and I was fully able to do this lab without trouble. I demonstrated the ability to use a knife, skillet, and stove and had all my timing down for adding each ingredient. if I were at home I would 100% be able to cook this for my family. Maybe for a family lunch sometime this summer.
Core Competency Reflection
Creative Thinking: During this lab, I was all on my own. This led to me being pushed to some of my limits. At times I was unsure and confused about the next steps but I managed to use my critical thinking to help myself through obstacles that occurred. I remained cool and attacked the problem with reason.
Personal Awareness And Responsibility: being on my own I had to be very self-reliant. I had no one else to ask questions or anyone to give me a hand with something. for this lab, I knew this so I made sure I had everything prepped (mise en place). I made sure that everything that i needed to personally do to help the results of my grilled cheese was done.
During this lab, my partner and I had some difficulties, but when we communicated the problem and found ways around it, we found success. This lab was great and cool to experience with different chemicals. during this lab I tried to understand my assignment and execute it to my abilities I tried to take self-accountability. Knowing what I had to do and having it planned out with my partner really helped us complete this lab. during this lab I found the importance of communicating with your teammates to help each other out. i also found that personal accountability is important so you know what you need to do and execute.
My school year this year has been a great year for me. I started this year with my football season. We didn’t have the season we hoped for but our team for next season is ready. I followed the rest of the year with the basketball season which we won districts and came 4th in Frasers. The rest of the year has been football off-season training. My year has been great, awesome, and a great learning year. Although I transferred schools and didn’t have many friends I grew and now I’m having an amazing time.
This is my favorite website because I can see other Canadian football players and I can see my own stats. It displays Canadian highschool football in a great way for many athletes (link was not working!)cfcf
My Favorite Video
Favorite video because its a video about a really important game I played in.
My Favorite Image
I decided to put this picture down because it meant a lot to me after hours and hours in the gym with my teammate to finally be at the top. This moment was amazing to experience with my team mates.
My Favorite Quotes
I love this quote because it shows that no matter what happens in the beginning you can always change the outcome.

1) I can work with others to achieve a goal: Kevin and I both had an equal part of the project to do. He did half the PowerPoint, I did the other half and we both worked on the drawing. We both communicated well with each other to know our tasks and in the end, it turned out great.
2) I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share: During this project, I tried to stay in my lane and finish what I needed to get done but there were also times when I gave Kevin help and he gave help to me as well.
3) I can apply constructive strategies to navigate misunderstandings and conflicts: Whenever there was a disagreement between me and Kevin we tried to identify the problem then we both talked about both sides of the story. From there we were able to overcome the problem and continue working.
4) I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others: Kevin and I are very good friends and we have great chemistry so it made it easier to build and create ideas off each other. We loved thinking of new ways to approach and do things and that’s what helped us in the end.
1. it’s important because you want to know where your money goes and where it’s being put. just to know where your funds are going.
2. I feel that logical persuasion is the best way to persuade someone. People are more attracted to facts than catchy slogans. they want reassurance about what they’re purchasing.
3. I feel that ethics is the best way to sell a product. ethical reasoning is better because you’re telling the audience you should buy it because it helps you do this or it makes it easier to do this. you’re displaying ease in a product, and what’s better than making life easier?
Core Competency Reflection
One of the ways I ensured my group was clear on what we were doing was to communicate with them outside of school. I texted them and communicated clearly what each one of us had to do to them.
When there was disagreement within the group, I found it helpful to identify the problem and look at ways to overcome it. I talked it out with my peers and found a solution to move forward.
I showed that I valued feedback from others in my group by having an open mind and being ready to listen to them. I am always ready for ways to improve myself and my classmates, so any criticism or feedback is always accepted by me.
This was our Egg drop. we didn’t get any for the golf tower sadly 🙁 sorry
Curricular Response
Through the egg drop lab, we tried working logically and we tried to make cushioning by wrapping our egg in newspaper and putting the cardboard sticking out of the bottom to break the landing. For the golf tower, we tried making a big base to support the weight of the ball. this didn’t work so well for us because, in the end, our support beams were too long and flimsy. through both these labs, the scientific lab helped me and my partner out because it gave us solitude. what I mean by that is it gave us things to look at in the lab and it was a good structure for our observations and information.
Core Competency Self Assessment
I liked the golf tower scientific lab more because even though it didn’t go very well I definitely felt that I and Rome were starting to get a base and we were really starting to pick things up, but unfortunately, that was when the time was ending.
A lot of the challenges we faced were fixable problems. But it wouldn’t have been possible if I and Rome didn’t start working together. in the beginning, I had an idea and it failed, so Rome tried his idea and it failed. everything didn’t start working till we both attacked the problem together. if only w
These 2 labs helped me understand the scientific method more because they showed me how to prove a guess/hypothesis it also showed me the importance of observations and how to use them. Moving forward to my grade 10 year I feel that I am ready to do my hypothesis, observations, and analyses anytime I am asked thanks to these experiments.
Core Competency Creative Thinking
I demonstrated that I can create new things when I communicated with my teammate to form ideas and work through any hardships I had with the project or with my partner.
I demonstrated that I can build on the ideas of others when I ask my partner about his thoughts on the subject at hand. When I put and share my ideas and try to troubleshoot with my partner. When I listen to my partner when they would like to speak and incorporate them into the assignment
When trying new things, I expect setbacks and failures and use them to develop my ideas. An example of this from the Scientific Method labs would be when I am making my hypothesis I can use and incorporate my observations and research to properly form a hypothesis. using the conclusion to learn and get ready for the next experiment
TRADITIONS- Canadian and Mexico both celebrate the new year at the same time of the year
SPORTS/ATHLETES- both Canada and Mexico both send athletes every year to both the summer and winter Olympics. as well, both countries love soccer
LANDMARKS- both countries have beautiful scenery and attractions both have famous waterfalls. Cascada de tamul and niagra falls
MUSIC/ART- Although the music is very different for each country there are both still have enjoyable kinds of music. The art is fairly different but both art styles are a look into their culture, with both of them having vibrant colors.
I have visited Mexico in the past and my experience was amazing. right before covid hit me my sister and my mom had the chance to go down to Cancun and enjoy a week there for my sister’s birthday. We went to the beaches, swam with dolphins and went snorkeling. it was a very cool experience and the culture and people there were very welcoming and kind. Mexico is definitely a place I would love to revisit.
Core Competency Reflection
I can work with others to achieve a goal: I was the base and the starter of this project. I got Kevin to start working efficiently and did my part. I also communicated a lot with my partner.
I take on roles and do my share: For this project, I took all the responsibilities in this group. I was the only one who communicated and I did 9 questions as opposed to 4. I also painted and printed the poster and scripts. I feel my partner could have contributed more but I think it worked out in the end.
I can understand and share information about a topic in a clear and understandable way: I shared my information on the poster and on the script, and we shared it with the class in a clear and open way. we also expressed the information with the printed pictures and the Mexican flag on the poster board.
I can reflect on my thinking: Through this project, I know what I can do better and what I did well. I can make my project cleaner and just clean the little mistakes. Maybe next time I can choose a new partner to include new ideas.
1 Goal
I can reflect on my thinking: A goal I have for the future is to use my class time more wisely. I know that if I start and get going I can work efficiently. Class time is very helpful if you use it right so if I can get me and my partner on track we could get things done faster, neater, and more efficiently.
