Where The Blood Mixes – Discuss the Character of Mooch.

There are many examples found within the literature that illustrate the character of Mooch. Overall, Mooch is a complex individual. He seems happy and joyful most of the time, but it is noticeable that he has an underlying layer of depression and vulnerability. Mooch uses humor as a defense mechanism against his everlasting pain and trauma. This is mentioned when Mooch and Floyd were talking about the past, when Mooch said that he laughs because if he doesn’t, he “might just fall apart”. This indicates that Mooch’s jokes aren’t for fun but instead are for survival. He masks his suffering with laughter, using it as a shield against the overwhelming weight of his past trauma. Although Mooch tries to cover his pain with humor, it still sometimes comes through with no humor. Behind the smiles and laughter, Mooch feels hopeless and alone. Mooch is used to the feeling of rejection and abandonment that he says he “ain’t gonna beg nobody to care about [him]”. Instead of admitting his need and want for connection, he gets defensive. This characteristic was shaped by the neglect and trauma that he has experienced. Despite all that Mooch is going through, Mooch is resilient. When June was worried about Mooch jumping off the bridge, he said that “[he walks] across this bridge everyday”. No matter how bad things get for Mooch, this shows that he will keep pushing through. He acknowledges that the past will always be with him, but he continues to move forward. Because of these statements, Mooch is a tragic but relatable character. Although he uses humor to hide his lasting pain and depression, he can be honest at times which shows his true emotions making him a deep and layered individual.

Inductive/Deductive Reasoning in Popular Games

Mastermind

The game that I played was Mastermind. Mastermind is a game where you have to guess a code that includes 4 colors. You have 8 colors to choose from and you can guess a sequence of 4 colors from those 8 at a time. When you guess a code, red and white pegs are placed into 4 slots to determine how many colors are correct. A red peg means a color is correct and in the correct spot, and a white peg means a color is correct but in the wrong spot. Although you get this information from the red and white pegs, you do not know which colors are correct, and that is where you have to do the rest of the thinking.

Strategies

An example of a strategy I used was close to a process of elimination type of strategy, but it was also a lot of guessing. I started with placing the first 4 colors and saw if there were any that were at least correct. For example, if I didn’t get any white pegs to indicate that I got any of the first 4 colors correct, then I would know that the code involves the last 4 colors, which would be easier to work with. (Process of elimination).

How Mastermind uses Inductive/Deductive Reasoning

In Mastermind, inductive reasoning is mainly used because the game involves using specific observations, like observing patterns, to find out the code. Although, deductive reasoning is also used in the game when you build off your previous guesses, because you are using general ideas to come to a specific solution.

Core Competency Self-Assessment for Music Composition 11

An example of where I took a significant risk in my thinking or the expected process was when I had to make a cover song. Usually when I’m creating and composing a song, I only make fast kind of trap beats because it is easy and fun to work with. Although for our cover project, I wanted to explore and see what it is like making songs in other genres. I tried covering a kind of slower paced song, with guitar so I could try recording, and some drums so I can try a different drum beat instead of a trap style. This was somewhat a risk for me because I was used to making different types of beats/songs, so this was definitely a step in a different direction, especially with having to record my guitar playing and using more rock type drums. In the end, I did enjoy trying something different and it sparked a new interest in me for exploring and making beats or songs that are different genres.

  • I appreciate feedback on… and prefer it comes in the form of…

I usually appreciate when I get feedback on tests and prefer when it comes in the form of going through the test. Tests are usually to quiz you on your knowledge about the subject you are learning about and whenever I get something wrong, I usually don’t know it. It helps me when the teacher goes through a test after it is marked because I can see what the right answers were. It’s even better if the teacher explains how to answer the question correctly, in detail, so I am able to get an even better understanding.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen when I was working on the script with my partner. We both made a plan on who was doing what, so we were able to get stuff done faster and more efficiently. We had to make sure we had clear communication so there would not be an overlap in our work, and to make sure that everything was covered thoroughly.
  2. An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas was when I was going through some of the work editing and adding points onto my partner’s work. I was able to create connections between their ideas and my ideas, so adding extra points was easier since that connection was made.
  3. If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to work around it and find an area in the disagreement where we do somewhat agree. From there, we can work on it and expand. If there is nothing we can agree on, I would say to somehow combine the two ideas into one, after all there would be more information in that scenario.

Critical/Reflective Thinking

I used my critical and reflective thinking skills during the single and double replacement lab by analyzing the products of the experiments, using my analyzing skills to write feedback about the experiment, and how I researched before the experiment. In order to classify the what the product was and what qualities it had, I had to analyze carefully throughout the reactions. For example, this picture shows the product of the silver nitrate and copper pieces reaction. This reaction took a total of ten minutes to fully complete, and I had to watch it very carefully throughout those ten minutes, and write about it. Writing about the products is where used my analyzing skills to write feedback. I had to really pay attention so I could go into detail while reflecting. To analyze these products correctly, I had to learn about them in class and study hard so I could be more confident while classifying the products. My critical and reflective thinking skills helped me with this lab, because we had to balance, classify, and write about single and double reactions a lot.

Reflection

An aspect in my life I believe I excel at is definitely getting enough sleep. I never stay up late, I physically can’t and I just don’t like it. I also think I eat well at sometimes, but on some days I don’t and eat junk. An aspect in my life I think I could improve on is being more active and having a regular eating habit. I do kickboxing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I want to start working out on the weekends as well. My eating at the moment is random, and I think I would benefit and be more healthy if I had normal eating times and not eating as much junk. One of my core competencies I demonstrated strongly during this unit were personal and social skills. I had to be aware of what I was doing and eating throughout the week, which were my personal skills, and I also had to make sure I’d connect with people, which were my social skills.

Photography Portfolio Core Competency

Creative Thinking

I demonstrated creative thinking with this photo by coming up with a jolly scene and putting objects together to make it look appealing, and to give it the jolly feeling. Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are brainstorming, planning, and doing experiments to see what works and what doesn’t. When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I look back on notes or ask questions to advance the development of my ideas. An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is color theory because I was able to show my understanding of it perfectly in this photo. One strategy that stimulates my imagination is looking at other photos for reference or ideas.

ME Card

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I listen to music. Music is one of my passions and my passions make me happy. Music can also help me clear my mind so I’m not thinking of so many things so I can focus on my work. I have valuable ideas to share about photography and I do so by joining the photography class and engaging in the activities. A short term goal is getting my license. I am 15 now and I can get my L when I turn 16. I am excited to start saving up for a car and driving.
