Transforming Parabolas

Equations

Parent Function: y=x² My Function: y= 4(x+1)²-2

Graphing

My quadratic equation, y = 4(x + 1)² – 2, introduced multiple transformations to the parent function. It brought about both vertical and horizontal shifts, as well as alterations in the parabola’s shape. With a positive h-value of 1, the parabola shifted to the left of the x-axis, moving the vertex one unit to the left. Simultaneously, the negative k-value of -2 shifted the vertex downward by two units along the y-axis, resulting in a final vertex of (-1, -2). Moreover, the a-value exceeding 1 led to a narrower parabola.

Self Assessment

  1. In this assignment I used a verbal description and a visual graph. In a written paragraph showing my understanding of parabolas and transformations I connected it to math terms we’ve learned in class as well as the visual graph I created.
  2. In my paragraph I used the words quadratic equation, vertical/horizontal shift, vertex, to explain my understaffing of transformations.
  3. By using bolded text on each topic within the assignment I talked about, it is evident to see when a new topic starts. When creating my graph in demos I made sure there was no overlapping or messiness to it. Everything is clear and easily readable.

Core Competencies-CLE 10

When receiving feedback from my teacher and classmates I communicated my understanding in a progressive way. I also communicated them to go deeper into their feedback and show me how I can make it better. When I gave feedback to my classmates, I made sure to communicate in a constructive and uplifting tone. I wanted to also point out things that they did an excellent job of.

Making and Sharing Reflection

I make a step-by-step plan for production by talking with my group members, taking notes, and asking the teacher questions. I can identify tools, technologies, materials, and processes for production. This helps me because I can quickly know when and what to use it for. I work collaboratively and individually well, while I read through my recipe and plan in my head, then deliver my ideas to my group members.

Core Competency Reflection

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include asking questions to my teacher or students. As an active listener, I notice other questions my peers ask so I don’t need to ask the same one. I show others that I truly value their contributions by applauding and thanking them while also creating a team and inclusive environment. I need to work on collaborating better with people i dont know to prepare me for the world.

Making and Sharing Reflection

In my class, we learned about minimizing food waste. One of the main ways is to eat what we make. Part of this class is expanding our food pallet and trying new things is a really good strategy to minimize food waste. something else is we took certain amounts of certain things. For example, maybe we weren’t feeling that hungry so we only took so many potatoes to incorporate into our hash. Lastly, people who didn’t like certain parts of the hash didn’t eat that part so that everyone can have some and there can be zero waste.

Core Conpetency Reflection

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to have constant communication while we cook. Also, having conversations and asking questions before we start cooking are very important. While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding by trying new things and learning from others. I go in with an open mindset and am always ready to learn something new. I know the group is working well together when I hear/see people listening to each other in a respectful manner and paying attention to people. When people ask questions this also has an effect on the group. Something I am working on is showing I truly value people’s contributions, I can often have a blank face and need to work on letting people know they’re doing a good job and I appreciate their contribution.
