Math 9 Foundations Self Assessment

A) I feel I positively progressed overall from start to semester to end. I feel this way because I’ve learned many helpful strategies that make me feel more confident with my solving abilities. An area of growth I can use next year to improve on is asking for help when I need it because this will further benefit my abelites and strengthen my understanding for math.

B) Prior to this course, I set a personal goal of getting an A. Throughout the course, this goal began to not fit my skills, so I set a new goal of studying hard for my tests to be prepared. I felt the need to do this so I could truthfully say that I tried my best.

C) One thing I feel I’ve improved this semester is the effort I’ve put into my classes. I’ve put in my full effort for each class and made it a point to always submit my assignments. It makes me feel better going into summer knowing I worked for the break.

D) Another comment I’d like to make is that a great teacher to educate you makes all the difference for a student. It makes it easier to show up and put in the work when you have a helpful and positive role model helping you along the way. The teacher for me that demonstrated this was my math teacher.

Core Competency Reflection

I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas– how I was able to demonstrate this during my project is when I had a printing malfunction while printing the flag of Bolivia. I used that to to further develop the background of my poster, by then making it the flag in itself.

I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals– I demonstrated this by taking constructive criticism from my friends and family. I took their advice and used it to make my poster better because of it.

I can develop a body of creative work over time– I chose this because I felt I was able to produce a well-made poster, however it took longer to make than I would have thought. In saying this, I’m grateful for the amount of time I had.

I can reflect on my thinking– I’d like to improve on this because I feel like processing more of what I’m writing and reading would be beneficial to help me better understand the topic more. I plan to do this by reading to myself and not just aloud so I can understand what I’m saying better.

French 9 – Edublog Assignment

Looking back, I realize how little I actually knew about French. Pronunciation is still sometimes I’m working on, however I do think for myself it’s changed beneficially since the start of this school year. Something that surprised me was how much fun it could be to collaborate with my peers and friends during class for projects, or even just for Quizlet rounds. I still find memorizing all the different verbs without mixing them up from one another challenging, but I hope to work on it in the future.

One of the projects from this semester that I am proud of was my “Arbe de la Famille” project. With this project, we had to create a diagram of a family tree, and in detail talk about five or more family members in front of the class. I got the project done on time, however I did take my time on making sure that the family tree was detailed. Something that went well was the overall visual aspect to my project. Something I’d do differently next time is communicate better so I could actually work on presenting my project in front of the class.

Social Studies 9: Final Reflections

Semester Reflection

Ethical Judgment

This semester, I completed an independent historical fiction novel study by reading Passchendaele which was about Sergeant Michael Dunne returning home scarred in various forms. He ended up in a Calgary, military hospital. There, he meets Sarah Mann, a nurse, with her own secrets to hide. He falls irrevocably in love with her. Because of his love for her, he returns to battlefield to protect Sarah’s wayward brother.

In my book, one of the characters Sergeant Michael Dunne, made a promise that was unrealistic to his lover Sarah Mann. His promise was that when returning to battlefield he’d come back home to her. Essentially, he promised her that he would not die. This, is obviously out of his hands, especially when he knows well, that that is not a promise he can keep.

I also practiced using concrete evidence from a text. One of the best pieces of evidence I used for this project was when I wrote:

“We surrender. We give up. You can goddamn have us.”- Dunne, pg. 12-13.

When he said this, it showed great leadership and power because he spoke up and spoke on behalf of the army to the enemy (Germans).

Deciding whether or not to emulate this person’s actions matters today because the book itself is based off of a partly true story. This leads to the idea that people did have to serve back then, none optionally, it was simply the life you were born into. Many people had a partner or loved one that they had to watch getting sent off to the battlefield. I’m sure at least one of which had a similar, out-of-hands promise like Michael and Sarah did too. His actions matter today because they bring a sense of relatability and understanding to people who have also lost a loved one at war.

Core Competency Reflection

I gather and synthesize information to develop logical conclusions, such as when I wrote my historical fiction independent text and quoted certain lines in the book, following with a run down and conclusion of how the quotes related to the point I was trying to make. An example of this is:

“I’m going home”, said Peters.

“No, you’re not. Put it down.”- Dunne.

When Dunne said this, he showed his traits of assertiveness, and his ability to at the same time stay calm to reflect a calm display on whomever he was trying to calm.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when I participated in discussion with my group for the “Motives for Colonization’s” brainstorm, where we jotted down the different motives contributing for colonization’s, based off of different decades using culturally significant events.

I have valuable ideas to share about… and do so by contributing any thoughts I have in class discussions when I have an opinion that I feel necessary to share that will benefit the topic of reason.

Internet safety is important because it ensures your well being and the well being of others. It can have lifelong consequences that reflect badly on your character if you engage in negativity, harassment etc. Essentially, once you or anyone else put out any information online it is available for anyone to see. This includes your location, photos or videos, data information and more. All of these can be used in negative ways to harm you. For an example, when applying for future employment positions many employers will preform a search of you online to make sure they’re hiring someone who aligns with their values. A picture of you intoxicated isn’t exactly what most would consider to be a display of these values and in the end will likely affect your chances in getting the job you’re wanting. Steps you can take to avoid this are, before posting things online, stop and ask yourself if you’d want your mom, teacher, or future employer to see that photo. If the answer is unsure, that would suggest that the signs are pointing to no. Before engaging in conversation with others online, make sure you’re emotionally regulated and not reacting quickly out of anger. When doing these small steps, you’re giving yourself a positive future.

Learning the Scientific Method: Self Assessment

Curricular Response

The golf tower challenge improved my knowledge of the Scientific Method in the way I was able to improve my inductive learning skills by observing the experiment and inferring results. I observed that the taller the tower became as we added newspaper cylinders, it began to fold in on itself. In the process, the structure became more unstable and affected how tall we were able to build it. This suggests, that the base of our tower was not sturdy enough to acquire larger amounts of weight. It also suggests that the taller a structure is, it requires stronger building materials which we did not have. I came to these conclusions through deductive learning.

Core Competency Self Assessment and Creative Thinking

The scientific lab I’m the overall most proud of would be the golf tower. I feel this way because my partner and I persevered and were able to make changes when our initial design was roughly only 2 feet tall, compared to our final structure being 6 feet tall. In the process I learned how to make the tower stronger to support more height.

The main challenge for us in this activity was our base legs being slightly uneven, causing the tower to tilt/tip as the structure got progressively taller. We overcame this by cutting the tip of the cylinder that was at the top of the tower at a slanted angle. This is where they golf ball was placed. This allowed for a change in weight, for the tower to now lean in the opposite direction of the original lean. This compensated for the uneven leg base.

I learned more about the scientific method through this experiment by formulating a hypothesis about what would happen in the experiment and then testing it. Through using observation, we can infer results that either confirm or deny the original hypothesis.

I demonstrated that I can create new things when I built a tower out of newspaper that was 6 feet tall and could hold the weight of a golf ball.
