English 12 Reflection

My Reflection

Notes (Pinterest)

For my reflection, I chose to reflect on our first essay, the Narrative Essay. We were assigned to write about a family story, so I wrote about my grandfather’s move to Canada. I really enjoyed working on this project because it was really interesting learning more about my family and to see where I come from. I didn’t know much about my grandfather earlier life so it was interesting to learn more. I was a bit nervous at first to present, but by practicing a lot I was able to successfully give a good presentation! Overall, I really enjoyed this project.

Core Competency Reflection

In discussions and conversations, I helped to build and extend understanding when doing the interview part of this essay. It was important to me that I shared an accurate account of my grandfather’s story. I ensured so by actively listening and asking questions so that I fully understand.

As an active listener, I notice that I prefer to write notes so that I will remember what the speaker says and so that I remain focused. In addition, I often ask questions to fully understand what the speaker is trying to convey. I may even repeat what he said to make sure I understand.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in how I presented my essay. I spoke clearly and slowly so that everyone could understand what I was speaking about. I also made sure I fully understood my story so I that I was able to add extra detail if I saw fit.

When I need to boost my mood and refocus, I will take a small break in order to do my best work. I also may listen to music to boost my mood.

I can improve my communication skills. I think learning to communicate clearly is important because it is useful in all areas of life. I can improve my communication skills by practicing what I want to say and remembering to speak louder so that everyone may understand.

Spanish 11 Core Competency Reflection

Critical Thinking

In-class Write on my last vacation.

A few weeks ago, we were assigned to write an in-class Spanish write about my last vacation. I was a bit nervous because we haven’t written much in Spanish by ourselves, but I ended up being pretty happy with the end result. I used Critical Thinking by utilizing both a dictionary and the Libro to write this essay. By using both books I was able to find the necessary words and phrases quickly. In addition, I used feedback from previous writes to improve this one. I think I have improved on my Spanish writing skills. Overall, I am happy with my final score, and I think I did a good job on this essay. One thing I can do to improve my writing skills is to review grammar structure and rules so that my sentences are more grammatically correct. In addition, I can try to read a simple Spanish book and study their sentences.

Life Saving Measures

Over the course of these two weeks I feel I have learned more about how to save lives. First, when we started discussing CPR, I didn’t feel comfortable performing CPR because I felt like I wouldn’t be able to help much. But I learned that when people have a heart attack they are already dead. So I should always try to help even if it doesn’t save their life because my attempt will only have either a positive or neutral effect. This has helped me to become more confident in my abilities. Then, when the nurse came in, I learned just how powerful alcohol is and that it is important to never drink above your limit. Finally, I learned more about Naloxone. For example, I learned that you can obtain a kit for free and that it will have a neutral affect on someone who isn’t overdosing. I think this is really important since someone could accidentally misdiagnose someone. Overall, I think that this health week has been really useful and I think I am better prepared to help someone. I think it is important to inform students to be aware of their ability to help because then more people may potentially get saved.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements by remembering the two acronyms we learned this week. I can remember SAVE ME and my ABC’s to discern if someone needs CPR or Naloxone. Also, I learned the difference between someone overdosing on alcohol and drugs. By learning this information, I will be able to successfully help others and administer the proper help.

English 11 – Core Competency Reflection

Over the 4 and a half months of class, I think I have learned a lot. But I think the most important thing I have improved on is my communication skills in both writing and speaking. “Communicating encompasses the set of abilities that people use to impart and exchange information, experiences, and ideas; to explore the world around them; and to understand and effectively use communication forms, strategies, and technologies.” I think that I was successful at imparting and accepting information when we studied the Shakespeare plays. I was able to comprehend them and then write an essay and other paragraphs that allowed me to share my opinions. For example, the last essay we wrote was comparing Shakespeare’s Macbeth to Disney’s The Lion King. I was able to effectively communicate my ideas and connect ideas from both plays to establish my opinion. Also, we had to make a presentation about a book we read, and I think I was very successful at imparting information about a book that not a lot of students have read. Before this presentation, we were taught how to present properly, and I was able to understand and use those strategies to have a good, understandable presentation. Overall, I think I have improved on my communication abilities making me better prepared for English 12 and for my future life.

Titration – Chemistry 11

Curricular Competency Explanation

Lab 20C’s purpose was to titrate a mystery hydrochloric acid solution and 0.100 M sodium hydroxide and from there determine the molarity of the hydrochloric acid. A titration is a special neutralization reaction wherein a specific amount of acid is mixed with phenolphthalein and a base is placed in a burette and is slowly mixed with the acid until is changes colour. Titrations allow you to discover the volumes needed for a neutralization. So, the students titrated NaOH into 10.00±0.05 mL HCl and phenolphthalein solution. After four trials it was determined that 14.12 mL ±1.4% of NaOH was needed to neutralize the solution. This was determined when the titration reached the endpoint, when the colour turned pink from its original clear state. The endpoint of a titration is when the colour changes ever so slightly because this means that the solution is pretty much neutralized, with just a slight bit more base. With that number, they calculated 1.412×10-3±1.4% moles of NaOH which allowed the students to determine the molarity of the HCl solution which is 0.412 M. A systematic error occurred because the students could only record the neutralization through qualitative observations. And a human error occurred because when the students added a half drop of NaOH by mistake rather than a quarter drop. Due to this, the true average amount of NaOH may be lower than the results obtained in this lab.

Core Competency Reflection

I think I did a good job collaborating in this lab. For example, this was a partner lab, so my partner evenly split the responsibilities of this lab by discussing prior who will do what. We both set up the lab and then we took turns titrating and recording answers. However, during this lab, we had a few questions. Some we were able to effectively communicate with eachother to solve, but others were more difficult. So, we also collaborating with neighbouring groups to come up with solutions. Also, I tried to actively listen so that we could collaborate even better. The picture shown above is of one of our titrations. By applying the strategies I mentioned we were able to successfully complete this lab. One thing I could work on is slowing down when I talk so that I will be able to communicate even better.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

CPR Reflection

One thing that I didn’t know prior to this class is that during CPR you have to push 5 cm deep and 100-120 reps per minute. This is a really important to know since this is the one of the most important parts of learning CPR.

My main takeaway from this class is how important it is that people learn CPR now so that if the situation comes up, they will be prepared. Most people don’t react because their scared or don’t think they’re good enough, but this class teaches you to be confident and that “I am trained, I can do this.”

Some of the risks for heart problems and strokes are high cholesterol and obesity so having a good diet can help prevent heart problems and can lower blood cholesterol levels.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was when I learned about how important CPR is. For example, a person having cardiac arrest needs immediate CPR otherwise they most likely won’t survive.
  2. When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I try to be extra friendly to make everyone feel comfortable. I aslo try to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard by taking extra time to listen.
  3. One of the ways I can see using this is to help others if someone needs CPR. Even if someone is having another medical emergency I will know how to react and how to help others. This course helps you learn to remain calm and focus on the problem. I think this class is very useful.

Inductive/Deductive Reasoning in Popular Games

For this assignment, one of the games I chose to play was Minesweeper. In Minesweeper you’re goal is to identify all the ‘mines’ on the board by clicking on the all ‘safe squares’ without clicking the ‘mines’. This game was pretty difficult but I found a few strategies that helped me win. For example, when you click a ‘safe square’, it will reveal how many ‘mines’ are directly beside it. So, by comparing other squares together I determined spots where the ‘mines’ had to be and I eliminated places where it was impossible. I think that this game uses deductive reasoning since I used logical reasoning and the process of true statements/elimination to win the game.
