CPR Reflection

a) Something I didn’t know or consider before was what an AED is an how it works. I’ve seen them before at hockey rinks and didn’t realize how effective they are and that anyone can be trained to use them although they can be used without training as well. AED’s provide people with easy to follow audio and visual instructions. They can save someone’s life that are experiencing a heart attack or cardiac arrest.

b) A key takeaways from the practical CPR unit we did in class was that CPR is a first aid technique that can save someone’s life in an emergency. As well I learned that if someone is choking (holding their hands over their throat, etc) you perform abdominal thrusts on the person to dislodge the item they’re choking on.

c) This unit connects to the nutrition unit we learned previously because eating unhealthily, such as fast food, processed food and sugary drinks can lead to a higher chance of having a heart attack. This type of diet can lead to obesity which can be a leading cause of heart attacks. As well, this unhealthy diet can contribute to blocked arteries which can also lead to heart disease.

Core Competency Reflection

Communication:

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by clearly communicating when I don’t understand something and asking for help when I need it. As well, I checked in with peers to clarify what I had missed when I was absent one day due to illness. I also participate regularly in class discussions and try to contribute positively to conversations.

Thinking:

One area of CPR that I would like to spend more time learning about is having a deeper understanding of the specific causes of a heart attack and cardiac arrest. Knowing this information will be valuable for my own health. Heart disease runs in my mom’s family on both sides so I want to be aware and make sure I do my best to avoid it.

Personal/Social:

On this unit I am proud that I accomplished learning how to perform CPR and passing the unit. When we began the unit I was uncertain that I would be able to do CPR because it made me feel a little queasy to be honest. I was thinking about the chance that something like this could happen to me as well. I am proud though that I learned a new skill where I might be able to save someone’s life with one day.
