Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map

“What core competencies did you demonstrate with the connecting media and psychological disorder mind map assignment? Explain”

  1. Communication – I represent my learning and tell how it connects to my experiences

I was able to represent my learning when I explained how I connected the song “let down” to my own personal experiences. I was able to use examples from the lyrics and I was able to perceive it and relate it to my personal issues. Looking at all the lyrics helped me find more metaphors that I put as examples for how I feel or how I’ve experienced other things.

  1. personal / social – I work to inform myself about issues surrounding me

After analyzing all of the song lyrics, I researched more about what it was actually about and I got informed about a lot of social and internal issues that people have which relates to mental health as well. Since the song explains flaws about society, it helped me understand issues around me and others.

  1. thinking – I can form new ideas to create things. I can also build on the ideas of others.

A lot of these lyrics inspired me to think of my own ideas and thoughts to create sentences to describe my thought process. I would take one lyrics, analyze it, and build ideas on top of it to add onto the original words. Since a lot of times song lyrics are not super straight forward, I tend to get my creative ideas from my own experiences or when I remember good ideas that others have told me about.

Monopoly Assignment Reflection

what core competencies did you demonstrate with the monopoly assignment?”

communication: I can represent my learning and tell how it connects to my experiences. I represented this by learning about different psychology terms and thinking of examples in which some are related to my own experiences for the chance cards. It also helps me memorize the meaning of words better, since I associate them with my own experiences.

collaborating: I can apply constructive strategies to navigate misunderstandings and conflicts. A lot of times I would mix up the meanings of the different psychology terms, so I would have lots of misunderstanding especially for the group related stuff. To fix this, I talked about it to my friends so then I can remember my discussions and how they apply to real life situations.

personal/social: I understand that learning is continuous and my identity will continue to evolve. I learned to be more open minded instead of just going off by what I already know about psychology, I really made sure to study all the topics and solidify my learning and understanding of new topics.

personal awareness and responsibility: I recognize my emotions and use strategies to manage them. Psychology has taught me a lot about how my emotions work, why they are the way they are, and how to manage them. I think I have learned a lot of new strategies on how to manage my emotions better, for example when I feel upset or my emotions get intense or aggressive, making lighter jokes out of it will help me to calm down. The same goes for helping other people calm their aggression.

social awareness and responsibility: I can identify how my actions affect the community or environment and I can make positive change. A lot of things I learned about my own social awareness and responses made me think about how I can use psychology to help others and the community instead. For example, I realize my mindset and things that I tell myself can affect the way I act, and my outlook on life. I can realize this and tell other people to help them have a better mindset too.

thinking : I can form new ideas to create new things, I can also build on the ideas of others. I like talking about psychology concepts with my friends, so then they can share their ideas and I can build mine on theirs. I find it really helpful to get perspectives that are different than my own, so then there is a wider variety of experiences to talk about.

critical and reflective thinking: I can reflect on my thinking by checking my project carefully to make sure I didn’t miss any important details, as well as reflecting on the new things I learned and how I can apply it to my own life. I spent a lot of time double checking the chance cards for this project, making the details specific to my own experiences and showing my thinking, to share that I really understand the concepts.

Transforming Parabolas

(parabola equations in order of image above)
1. the parent function f(x)=x^2

2. A parabola that describes a vertical shift up

3. A parabola that describes a vertical shift down

4. A parabola that describes a horizontal shift left

5. A parabola that describes a horizontal shift right

6. A parabola that describes a vertical stretch

7. A parabola that describes vertical compression

8. A parabola that is reflected on the x axis

Paragraph:

The red parabola (equation 1, f(x) = x^2) is the parent function, which I used as the base for all of the transformations. The blue parabola (equation 2, f(x) = x^2+5) shows that it moved upward vertically by 5 units, because the k value is 5, which changes the vertex from (0,0) to (0,5). The purple parabola (equation 3, f(x) = x^2-5), shows that it moved vertically downward by 5 units, because the k value is -5, which changed the vertex to (0, -5). The orange parabola (equation 4, f(x) = (x+10)^2) moved to the left horizontally by 10 units, because the h value is -10, changing the vertex to (-10, 0). The other blue parabola (equation 5, f(x)= (x-10)^2) moved to the right horizontally by 10 units, because the h value is 10, changing the vertex to (10, 0). The green parabola (equation 6, f(x)=5x^2) has a vertical stretch because the a value is greater than 1, basically making it thinner than the original equation. The dotted purple parabola (equation 7, f(x)=0.25x^2) has vertical compression because the a value is greater than 0 but less than 1, so this makes it wider than the original equation. The dotted orange parabola (equation 8, f(x) = -x^2) is reflected across the x axis, because the a value is negative so it opens downwards.

Core Competency Reflection:

“I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way”

I demonstrated this competency in this assignment because I was able to identify all of the equations and put them into the graph neatly. I fully understand why there are certain values in different equations, and I know how to explain it. I put my list of equations and the list of vertexes in the photos above and used colours that are easy to look at. I think my explanations are pretty clear and I explained all of the a, k, and h values and how they apply into equations and make different parabolas. I used the math vocabulary in my explanations. My graph is also spread apart and easy to see, and I chose numbers that made sure the lines were not too close together.

“I think about what I am going to convey and whom I convey it to”

I made sure to use the right terms and not have too many unnecessary words in my paragraph, since I am trying to explain it more formally. A lot of times I tend to write more casually, so I made sure I was aware of how I explained the equations. I understand that mathematical explanations need to be clear and explained properly to show my understanding. At first when I wrote my paragraph there was a lot of mixing up with my words and not using enough math vocabulary, but I made sure to double check everything and make sure that it is understandable. I also made sure to be clear with explaining how the parabola moves on the x axis (horizontally) or y axis (vertically).

Science 10

Science 10 – Core Competency Reflection Writing

a) Using Critical and Reflective Thinking, how do you feel you progressed in this course throughout the semester? Some things to discuss include areas of growth or improvement, areas that still need work next year, or specific experiences or lessons that stood out to you.

-” I am flexible and open-minded; I can explain more than one perspective and consider implications. ” I improved on being more open minded to new learning strategies, because I started to use kahoots and other methods of learning rather than just going with the flow. I also learned how to explain and understand the energy input and output for physics and how different perspectives on the energy significance can change what energy you are looking for. For example technically “thermal” could arguably be in anything that moves because friction causes heat, but I learned that it isn’t something that is a useful energy so the answer would be incorrect if I put that down on a test.

“- I represent my learning and my goals and connect these with my previous experiences. I accept constructive feedback and use it to move forward.” I always ask questions and make sure I understand what I am doing. A lot of times I made some big mistakes and I learned how to grow from them instead of just leaving it. I accept that sometimes I will get things wrong and that there is no use stressing over it, and getting upset about things I can learn for next time. For example, chemistry. I did really bad on it but I can study more instead of just scrolling on Instagram reels.

b) Using Personal Awareness and Responsibility, what personal goals did you set for yourself prior to this course?  Did you meet or exceed these goals?  Did you learn any strategies to help you self-regulate your homework/study habits?  Are there any examples of you self-advocating for yourself when you faced a challenging situation or lesson?

-” I consider alternative approaches and make strategic choices.” I learned more strategic study habits when I realized if I don’t lock in, it’s gonna be over for my grade. I used to feel very unmotivated in learning science but I started to find new ways to make it fun to learn and I have topics written down that I am not good at and remember to study them later.

-” I take risks and recognize that I may not be immediately successful. ” for this course I really thought I would do well, but after chemistry I lost hope. So I guess I stopped setting my standards too high because all I would get is very dissapointed in my grade. I might not be immediately successful at something I thought I was, and it’s okay because I can just try harder and understand the concept better. A lot of times I feel upset when I don’t understand something right away, but I need to be more patient.

c) Using Communicating, what ways did you communicate and demonstrate your learning? What forms of communicating did you feel you were strongest at (ex. full sentence writing, short answer writing and point form, orally explaining concepts to the teacher or other students, visually presenting information, etc.). What form of communication could you strengthen? What are some ways you might set a goal for this for next year?

“- I communicate confidently, using forms and strategies that show attention to my audience and purpose. ” I was probably best at visual and oral communication, because it was easier for me to explain concepts than to show them on paper. I learned/did better at things that has visuals. But when I do explain something on paper I prefer communicating by full sentences. However when I learn I am better at perceiving point form. I think I can improve to get better at reading from textbooks since I struggled with reading textbooks.

“- In discussions and conversations, I am focused and help to build and extend understanding. ” I demonstrated my learning by discussing with my friends and asking them questions. I build and extend my learning by listening to their perspectives on a topic and comparing them with mine. If I didn’t understand a topic I always asked a classmate or the teacher for an explanation to fully understand it.

d) What is one thing you felt you have improved on this semester?  (Does not have to be content based). How can you further use this strength in your next educational endeavour? (Ex. in any of the Science 11 courses)

I feel like I have improved on my understanding for biology, because at first I was very confused about the cell parts and the names, and it was hard to understand but I figured out a strength that I have is being able to memorize things better with colours and interactive activities, so I started to use kahoot and colourful highlighters for notes, while using analogies to compare the cell parts to other things so it is easier to remember. This will be useful in science 11 biology because I heard it requires a lot of memorization.

e) Are there any other comments on your experience in this course?(What did you like, what did would you prefer to be done differently, etc.)

I like how there was a shape of the day and week, it was very useful and I wish more classes did that. I also like how there were study review kahoots before tests.

4) Attach a picture of one artifact to your post to support your ideas.

I really liked the kinetic energy practice worksheets, and formulas were very helpful to me. At first it was very overwhelming and confusing but I realized I just needed to keep practicing different word problems, and fully understand the concept. I didn’t think I would like physics at first but these worksheets changed my perspective on it, and it’s actually pretty straight forward and simple at this level.

R2 – Sando

I think Japanese is creative with their sandwiches because Japan culture has a lot of creative and innovative things, so the same would be applied with food. I read somewhere that Japan also offers high quality food in convenience stores and also switch up the type of foods within different seasons, as well as making food look aesthetically pleasing. The sandwiches in Canada are mid compared to the ones in Japan honestly🥀🥀😭. Actually it depends on the type of sandwich. But if we compare convenience stores, Japan would have better sandwiches since the ones here are so basic and kind of boring. Just the usual, ham, cheese, lettuce, and like mayo or something.

I’m gonna be honest I haven’t had many creative meals but I have had some creative desserts. I remember having a hybrid donut where it’s like a mochi texture instead of bread-ish. It was pretty good and there were some cool flavours like matcha and mango. It would be terrible in sandwich form 🥀💔.

  • What sandwich type are you most excited to try? (Upload a photo if you make one!)

I am excited to try the ones that have fruit in them because I feel like it would be more like a nice light snack rather than a full meal. Which is good if I’m not too hungry or it would be good to eat after school.

  • If offered by him, would you eat a part of Anpanman’s head? Why??

Oh nah…. that’s kind of weird considering it is his head and like living bread just sounds radioactive to me. But it’s an interesting character. I’d pass on the taste test though.

R3 – Harajuku Fashion

Guiding questions for your reflection:

  • What is your opinion on Harajuku fashion? Have you seen Harajuku influences in Canada?

I think that harajuku fashion is interesting, because it is colourful and has unique combinations. I have seen a lot of it online on social media, and occasionally in real life. At school, I don’t see a lot of it but sometimes when I go to public places like malls or downtown, I see more people with that style.

  • Which type of Harajuku fashion did you like best? What parts resonate with you?

I liked how a lot of people wore vintage clothing, and that resonated with me because I also like shopping at vintage stores and thrift stores. I also like how colourful the fashion is and I think more people should wear bolder and brighter colours.

  • Japan is a country that values conformity, so why is Harajuku so popular among younger generations? Do you see similarities with youth fashion in Canada?

I think harajuku is popular among younger generations because it gives a safe space for people to find out more about their personal style without the pressure of societal norms. Since Japan already has very structured school and work systems, harajuku fashion helps people feel more comfortable with individualism and self expression. I see some similarities in Canada where people have diverse styles and use their clothing for self expression. I think it is great that people have unique styles and don’t care what others would think.

  • How important is fashion to you? What influences your fashion?

to me fashion is relatively important, not too much but I do enjoy creating outfits and taking photos to post on my social media. I also get most of my inspiration from Pinterest and maybe some creators on TikTok. Though at school, I don’t usually wear my best outfits and i usually wear basic clothing like just a hoodie and sweatpants because it is easier to take off and simple to change for sports. If I wore my good outfits then I might lose accessories or it will take more time to change.

  • Do you like your fashion style? If you had unlimited resources how would your style change?

I like my style, but if I had unlimited resources I would have multiple styles. A lot of times I wear hoodies and sneakers and those are usually expensive so if I had unlimited money I would buy the navy blue adidas spezials and some SCUFFERS hoodies. I would also buy more jeans and sweaters since those are also pricey, as well as anything from aritzia.

  • What is your future fashion trend prediction?

I predict that 2016/2017 trends might come back. Because a few years ago it was like 2000’s trends and fashion trends tend to repeat. I see a lot of patterns and trends like lower rise jeans coming back in style. I think jeans will always be in style but more low rise and mid rise than high rise.

CPR reflection

My Learning of CPR

a. What was something you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?

Something that I learned that I never considered or knew before was the signs and differences of strokes and heart attacks. I thought they were pretty much the same, but now I can identify the different signs from both of them. I also learned about defibrillation and AEDs. I always saw AEDs around public places but I never knew what they were used for.

b. What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?

I learned that it is important to know the exact steps to do CPR, because I never knew there were so many small details to CPR that I had to learn in order to be able to possibly save someone’s life. For example, the hand placement matters a lot as well as learning how to use an AED and being confident in knowing what to do.

c. How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?

this unit connects to the previous nutrition unit because the risks of getting a stroke/heart attack can increase by unhealthy eating. Higher blood sugar or cholesterol can increase risks and eating lots of vegetables, fruits, etc. can decrease those risks. Exercising regularly also decreases those risks and is overall good for your body to stay healthy. In the nutrition unit we learned a lot about different types of diets and exercise, which connects to having a good lifestyle therefore decreasing heart and brain problems.

Core Competency Reflection

Use 2-3 sentences to explain in more depth.

  1. In the Categories section choose “Grade 10”, “PHE10”and “Core Competencies”
  2. #PHE2022 #CCSelfAssessment #CPRReflection2025
  • One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on what we are supposed to do is to…

I always went over the steps before practicing performing CPR, so I am sure of what I am doing and what the other people in the group are doing. Often times I got confused and asked questions with my group, communicating on making sure I am doing the right thing. We helped each other understand what to do and reminded eachother if we missed a step or did something incorrectly. In the end everyone was confident in what to do and we helped eachother along the way to be more confident and sure of what we were doing.

  • One area of CPR in which I’d like to spend more time learning is…
I want to spend more time learning about how the heart and brain works and more things I can do to prevent risks of getting strokes or heart attacks, such as small details on what foods are the best and things I can do to encourage my family members to also live a healthy lifestyle.
  • In this unit, I am proud that I accomplished …. By ….

I am proud that I accomplished how to do CPR and memorized all of the steps as well as taking notes and being prepared for the test. A lot of it was really new to me as I have never seen anyone do CPR or had any lessons on it. I studied for the test by taking notes on everything in the booklet, and I also used my knowledge of nutrition that I studied about previously. I was a bit nervous on practicing CPR but now I can say that I am able to confidently do all of the steps and know what to do if needed.

R1- Valentine’s Day

  • Japan has a follow-up celebration called White Day on March 14th, where chocolate recipients return the favor by giving chocolates back. How does this relate to Valentine’s Day culture in Canada? What do you usually do for Valentine’s Day?

Usually in Canada, people tend to give Valentine’s day chocolates to eachother on the same day. On Valentine’s day, I celebrate it with my friends and typically give them chocolates to show my appreiciation for their friendship. Canada does not have a follow-up day for Valentine’s day, it’s just one day (February 14th).

  • In Japan, the concept of giri-choco reflects social obligations and the importance of maintaining relationships. Do you think this is something we should adopt in Canada? Why? (Did you like exchanging cards in elementary school?)

I think it is a good idea to make someone’s day especially if they don’t get any other chocolates on Valentine’s day. But I also think we shouldn’t be obligated to force or keep relationships with people we genuinely don’t like, and it may be awkward giving or recieving chocolates to someone you don’t value at all. It’s fun in elementary because everyone is just kids trying to have fun, and typically at that age, deeper friendship/relationship bonds aren’t formed yet, due to lack of experiences and maturity level, so it makes sense to try and keep an open mind to being friends with the whole class. As people get older, relationships with others are more complex since each individual has formed their own personal values and responsibilities, so it would feel awkward to give cards to people who you do not wish to make connections with.

  • How do you feel about kouhaku? Would you rather confess/get confessed to or pine for your crush afar?

Personally, I don’t wish to confess to someone even if I liked them because I am too busy with other stuff to handle a relationship and I wouldn’t want a situationship if they liked me back. Just because you like someone does not mean you need to confess, it all comes down to thinking about if you can handle an extra connection in your life. I admire the people who are brave enough to confess to their crush and being able to handle a romantic relationship in their life but it just isn’t for me right now because I would rather focus on school and sports.

  • Post a meme Valentine’s day card

English 10 reflection

Something that I was proud of during english 10 was my poetry writing. I feel like this year I got to extend my learning on poetric devices and it helped my writing overall. I find writing poetry easy to come up with, but I often don’t use many metaphors in my poems or other stuff like alliterations. Something that I learned was not writing “I” statements. I am used to writing with my personal opinion included, so it was difficult for me to get used to more formal writing.

WW1 Monument Reflection

SS midterm reflection

Core Competency Reflection

  1. When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I start by asking them what their strengths are so we can split the work fairly and each person gets to do something related to their strenghts. I usually try to get to know people before that, and I observe their working ethic. For this project, we split ourselves into smaller groups and worked with people who are best at understanding eachother and work with their strengths. I am better at creativity than research so I worked on the clay model with Alison. Sometimes it is hard for me to work collaboratively with others because I often have a different learning strategy and work ethic that others might disagree with. But I find it useful to communicate with people and we also worked collaboratively by making a groupchat to communicate over the weekend about projects or assignments.

  1. In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by asking my group members questions about topics that I find confusing, and help others with questions that they have. For me I find it difficult to understand a text of a topic I’ve read, so it helps me to interact with my classmates and discuss the topic so that I remember it better. I was a bit confused about the history of Ypres and the details related to it, so I asked my group members and they helped me a lot by explaining it verbally.

  1. What is one goal you have for yourself going forward?  Identify one of the areas below that you intend on working towards.  Copy and paste a prompt in that category and then reflect on why you are working on that goal and what you’ll do to achieve that goal.

” Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include… ”

I think this is a prompt that I can work on because often I would sleep very late trying to get things done at the last minute, or I would cram assignments at the worst times. I procrasinate a lot and I am trying to stop that habit. My goal is to sleep earlier (preferably at 10pm) so that I can wake up earlier and do assignments in the morning instead of at night which causes me to feel stressed and sleep late.
