• What is your opinion on Harajuku fashion? Have you seen Harajuku influences in Canada?

I think that harajuku fashion is interesting, because it is colourful and has unique combinations. I have seen a lot of it online on social media, and occasionally in real life. At school, I don’t see a lot of it but sometimes when I go to public places like malls or downtown, I see more people with that style.

• Which type of Harajuku fashion did you like best? What parts resonate with you?

I liked how a lot of people wore vintage clothing, and that resonated with me because I also like shopping at vintage stores and thrift stores. I also like how colourful the fashion is and I think more people should wear bolder and brighter colours.

• Japan is a country that values conformity, so why is Harajuku so popular among younger generations? Do you see similarities with youth fashion in Canada?

I think harajuku is popular among younger generations because it gives a safe space for people to find out more about their personal style without the pressure of societal norms. Since Japan already has very structured school and work systems, harajuku fashion helps people feel more comfortable with individualism and self expression. I see some similarities in Canada where people have diverse styles and use their clothing for self expression. I think it is great that people have unique styles and don’t care what others would think.

• How important is fashion to you? What influences your fashion?

to me fashion is relatively important, not too much but I do enjoy creating outfits and taking photos to post on my social media. I also get most of my inspiration from Pinterest and maybe some creators on TikTok. Though at school, I don’t usually wear my best outfits and i usually wear basic clothing like just a hoodie and sweatpants because it is easier to take off and simple to change for sports. If I wore my good outfits then I might lose accessories or it will take more time to change.

• Do you like your fashion style? If you had unlimited resources how would your style change?

I like my style, but if I had unlimited resources I would have multiple styles. A lot of times I wear hoodies and sneakers and those are usually expensive so if I had unlimited money I would buy the navy blue adidas spezials and some SCUFFERS hoodies. I would also buy more jeans and sweaters since those are also pricey, as well as anything from aritzia.

• What is your future fashion trend prediction?

I predict that 2016/2017 trends might come back. Because a few years ago it was like 2000’s trends and fashion trends tend to repeat. I see a lot of patterns and trends like lower rise jeans coming back in style. I think jeans will always be in style but more low rise and mid rise than high rise.
