R2 – Japanese Mascots

I like the idea of having mascots for cities. It’s a smart way to sell products related to those mascots, especially with tourists and travellers who can buy the merch or souvenirs of the mascot specific to each city they visit. It’s a smart way to make money and there are even performances where the mascots are involved. I don’t think it is only limited in Japan, I’m sure that there are other countries that could have a mascot. I noticed that here in Canada, we don’t have mascots for cities but we have lots of mascots for sport teams, like the Vancouver Canucks orca (my favourite hockey team); and some popular resturaunts– like how McDonalds has that funny looking clown. As a kid, I would’ve definately been happy if Coqutilam had a mascot.

I think that the most important factor of a mascot is the appearance. Ultimately, the appearance will affect the popularity and revenue. Let’s say some people who don’t know a lot about Japanese culture come into a tourist attraction shop, and want to buy some merch. They won’t buy it if the mascot is ugly or too boring. Therefore less popularity and sales will occur. Most people turn to looks at first glance, and choose whatever is the most cute / unique / eye catching.

My favourite mascot of the rankings is the 83rd one, めばえちゃん (Mebae Chan). I like it because it’s cute and has unique features that look inspired by nature (leaves/plants).

Why Japanese?

  • Inspiration – What inspired you to learn Japanese?

I got inspired to learn Japanese after I realized I got a developing in French last year, and Spanish wouldn’t be much better. Impulsively I chose Japanese- something with completely new letters. However, I know barely anything about japan or japanese culture other than eating the food sometimes. I listen to music made by Japanese artists, but they have no lyrics, so I am not familiar with the sound of the language. I still had to take a language so I can use it to go to UBC because its a requirement, so I chose Japanese because my friends are taking it as well. My cousin in gr12 also took Japanese, and he told me it was pretty good.

  • Goal – What do you hope to do with your new language skills?

My goal is to be able to understand Japanese and just know how the language works. I don’t know any other languages except for english which is really embarrasing. I should be at least bilingual.

  • Motivation – How will you keep yourself motivated throughout this course? What will you do if you are struggling?

I am already self motivated for all of my courses including this one, because last semester I got bad marks in classes so if I do bad again like…. it’s over for me. I will probably not be allowed to play hockey anymore. I am determind to do well and get extending. If I am struggling I will ask for help from my cousin.
