In the titration lab I used NaOH to neutralize HCl. Using the pH indicator, phenolphthalein, the solution would become pink when it turned to a base. To neutralize, the colour needed to be a pale pink colour.
I used my critical and reflective thinking skills to analyze the information and steps that were required and to do the lab. “I can analyze evidence to make judgements.” When doing this lab I needed to frequently check in with my solution to ensure the colour had not yet become pink. When the base was dropped into the acid, it temporarily became pink, as seen in the first image above. When mixed it returned to colourless because it had not yet become neutral. As I poured more NaOH into my beaker, the solution took more time to return to colourless. I analyzed this to mean the solution was getting closer to neutral. Because of this analyzation, I used my judgement skills to decide to be more careful and slowly drip the base into the solution. Using these core competencies I was able to successfully neutralize my acid and base and achieve the pale pink colour shown in the image above.
