English First Peoples 11 Reflection

Curricular Competencies Reflection

  • Comprehend and Connect – The whole point of the concept map was to be able to make connections between different Indigenous stories. Every story had a different purpose to it but all connected together with themes of reconciliation or struggles within the Indigenous community. This helped me get a new view on reconciliation and how to help with that

Core Competencies Reflection

  • Thinking CC – I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this concept map. I take the stories I’ve read and make judgments and connections between them to make decisions on what messages they are trying to tell us. Whether it is tricksters, peer pressure etc. This has let me know more about reconciliation and how the struggles with the Indigenous community has impacted them.

Math Self Assessment

To celebrate an accomplishment such as getting a good grade on a test I treat myself to something. Whether it’s a night out with my friends, or just getting a treat from a store. This makes me feel accomplished and gives me motivation for the next test.

When I am sad, angry, or frustrated, doing/playing guitar helps me be more productive and calm. This lets me become more in tune with my thoughts and tune out the outside world. This had helped me a lot for bigger tests like my final.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is the last unit which is Trig. This was a lot different to what I learned last year so I had to spend a lot of time learning and reviewing the entire topic.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the group work that we do. When we are sent to the whiteboards to do group work, I try my best to communicate my process of what I’m doing. Whether this is when I’m completing a question or asking questions about what my peers are doing.

Core Competency Self-Assessment (Rube Goldberg Machine)

Communication CC

  • Share the experience of communication/collaboration for your artifact

Within our rube Goldberg machine, our group had to communicate quite a bit so that we knew what we were doing and what was the best design for the best outcome. I think our group did very well with our communication and thought distribution. We listened to everyone’s ideas and opinions, we then considered the criteria involved to pick the best ideas to build our project.

Calculations

80,000 In Savings + 10,000 each year (3 years)

3 year GIC- $75,000 – 4.2% (x1)

75,000 x 1.042 = 78,150 x 1.042 = 81.432.3 x 1.042 = $84,852.4

1 Year GIC- $9,000 – 3.5% (x2)

9000 x 1.035 = 9,315 + 9000 = 18,315 x 1.035 = $18,956

1 Year Stocks- $5000 + $1000 (x3)

5000 x 1.0749 + 1000 = 6374.5 x 0.913 = 5819.92 + 1000 = 6819.92 x 1.0749 = $7,330.73

Leftover 10,000 in Savings

Total

84852.4 + 18,956 + 7330.73 + 10000 = $121,139.13

Justification

With my solutions, the risk of it is pretty low considering most of our savings was put in GICs. Although $5000 of our money was put into stocks, which can be pretty risky considering you don’t know how the market will behave. We did take into account of one of the three years going bad but you never know what will happen. They could all go well or all tank. Personally I really like this solution because its very low risk and after the risk tolerance test I took, I found my risk tolerance is low. Compared to our other ideas we were going to do 60/20 (20 into stocks and 60 into GIC) but that brings the risk of losing money up and it wasn’t even able to reach $120,000. All in all we were even left with $10,000 dollars at the end for our final solution.

Collaboration and Contributions

  1. How did you find working with your group

I really liked working with my group. We all had a similar mindset when it came to the risk/ideas of the project and were also able to have fun while doing it

2. How did you contribute to the group? And how did others in the group contribute to your learning?

I helped provide some ideas as well as possible risks of our solution to create the best solution possible. My other group members helped me with my calculations and made sure what we were doing, met the criteria needed for the down payment

3. Did you use any other the solutions proposed by your group? Why or why not?

We came up with various different solutions and tried them all out because we wanted to find the best one possible. But all in all the one we ended up choosing was the best

4. How would you rate your ability to collaborate with others in your group on a scale of 1-4 (1 not good; 4- excellent)

Core Competency Reflection

If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to… go though all of our options and talk about it. Find the advantages and disadvantages of each situation and find the one that fits our needs the best.

I appreciate feedback on… the work I have submitted and the information within it and prefer it comes in the form of a one on one conversation. I prefer this because that way I can see your emotions and where the feedback is really coming from.

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are… keeping in contact with them. By keeping in contact, I feel like I’m still apart of their life and making an impact on it somehow

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by… asking questions. By asking questions I feel like I’m engaging in the conversation as well as learning more about what they’re talking about and having a better understanding of the topic.

Unit 3 Conversation

Comparison to English Conversation

While working on the Unit 3 conversation I realized how hard it is to learn a new language and use it in real life. You have to think of so many things when you’re writing it, and when you’re writing it, you have to make sure it makes sense. We has to check our sentences multiple times to see if they made sense and not gibberish. All in all I really liked writing a Spanish Conversation to get a taste of the language I’m learning.

Core Competency’s

I ask and respond to questions, to be an active supportive listener

I chose this one because I was able to talk and listen to my group members about what we could add to the script to include all the criteria required.

I find it easy to be apart of a group

I chose the prompt because I was able to work and collaborate with my group well, so much so we finished with extra time to spear.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements

I chose the prompt because after being in this class for so long, I was able to analyze my marks so far and see what I could improve on while working on the conversation. As well as estimating what my final mark could be.

I use strategies to help me find peace and I sustain a healthy and balanced life style

I chose the prompt because while working on the conversation, sometimes I would really stress and overwhelmed about everything. So I asked my group if we could take a break for 5min and I find that really helped my group and I.

Goal

I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failures, but use that to develop my ideas

I chose this as my goal to work towards because I find that if I make a mistake on something I beat myself up for it. I want to be able to see that I made a mistake but just recognize it and move along. I will try to achieve this by seeing I made a mistake, give myself sometime to reflect on it but in the end leave it be.

Truly Devious: The Movie

My Movie

Plot, Character, Setting and, Mood

For my independent novel movie, I figured out what my avatar looked like by the info they gave me in the book and reading between the lines to get even more information. I chose those plot points I because I wanted something that reflected what the book was about without giving away the important parts or the ending. When figuring out the setting, you can look at what the character is wearing, how they speak, if they go to school and much more. In my book the setting was heavily described whether it was in the beginning or even throughout the book, so it was pretty easy to figure out what the important parts of the setting were. In my book, the mood is very dark and mysterious, so I wanted a song to reflect that. In other movies and books, the mood can mean many different things, how the character is feeling, the atmosphere etc. Throughout this novel study I learned how many different aspects go into finding out what goes on in the book.

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I… take a break or listen to music to help calm down. Once I feel better, I get back to work

I appreciate feedback on… what I need to work on and what I can do better on and prefer it comes in the form of… a written note or a formal conversation to find out what I can do better on

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by… researching information and creating different points of view for everyone to understand.
