Lab 20C: Acid-Base Titration

Throughout the titration lab, I demonstrated the core competency of communication when my partner and I would assign roles for the lab. An example of this is when my partner and I were deciding who would be the person to constantly swirl the Erlenmeyer flask which held the acid, while the other would work the buret and add the drops of NaOH into the flask which creates a neutralization. In the picture above, it shows the whole set up. The buret is the long tube that is above the Erlenmeyer flask, which holds the NaOH. The person who would be adding the drops into the flask would have to move the lever perpendicular to allow the liquid to seep through. Ultimately, we decided that I would be the one to swirl the flask and she be the one that would add the drops. For each trial we switched roles and communicated with each other if one of us didn’t know the next step.

My First In-Class Write About My Last Vacation

Critical Thinking

When I was writing my paragraph on, “Mi Ultima Vacaion,” which translate to “my last vacation,” I wrote about my cruise to Mexico I took during Spring Break. Throughout the paragraph, I wrote about the details of my cruise, who I went with, where I went, what I bought, and what excursions I participated in. While I was writing my paragraph I realized that I didn’t remember or haven’t learned some of the vocab I needed to be able to complete my writing. Words such as “cruise” and “pool” were crucial to my writing, so I was able to utilize my problem solving skills by grabbing a Spanish to English dictionary and searching for the vocabulary I required. If I couldn’t find it or was confused about which word to use (as there is usually more than one) I would ask the teacher. I took my critical thinking skills and I put it to use and solved a problem.

Parabola Transformations

  1. The first equation, the green parabola is the parent function, so there is no transformation.
  2. The second equation, the red parabola has a vertical shift transformation, and since the k value or the 5 is a positive, the parabola shifts upwards.
  3. The third equation, the black parabola has a vertical shift transformation, and since the k value or the 5 is negative, the parabola shifts downwards.
  4. The third equation, the blue parabola has horizontal shift transformation left, because the h value or the 6 is positive, and it has a vertical shift of 2 upwards due to the 2 or the k value being positive. In addition, the parabola has an a value of 2, and since it’s positive and greater than y, the parabola opens upward and is narrow.
  5. The fifth equation, the purple parabola has a horizontal shift transformation right because the h value or the 6 is negative, and it has a vertical shift of 1 upwards due to the 1 or k value being a positive. Beside those transformations, the parabola has an a value of 2, and since it’s positive and greater than y, the parabola opens up and is narrow.
  6. The sixth equation, the orange parabola has an a value of 8 which is greater than y and is positive therefore the parabola is narrow and it opens upwards and the parabola also has a h value or 10 which means the parabola has a horizontal shift right due to the 10 being a positive.
  7. The seventh equation, the green parabola with dash lines has an a value of 1/3 which is positive and is greater than y but less than 1 which makes the parabola positive and wide. The parabola also has a vertical shift 3 downwards, due to the k value or the 3 being negative, in addition to a horizontal shift left due to the h value or the 9 being a positive.

Communication Core Competency Reflection

Throughout this assignment, I have demonstrated that I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way by neatly jotting down my equations and the relevant information needed to understand the transformations the parabolas underwent. In each of my explanations about each of the equations on the graph, I explained how the either the h, a, or k value was changed and how it impacted the parabola and which transformation they each determined. For example, the second equation, the red parabola has a vertical shift upwards 5, because the k value, the 5 is a positive. In addition to this competency, I also demonstrated the competency: I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to when I assisted my peers with their assignment by either helping to explain how the transformations work and which values to change or if asked to read a sentence and provide feedback. An example of this is when I assisted a peer with creating a equation that required a vertical shift upwards. I explained how in order for the parabola to shift upward, it must be a positive, and if you want it to shift downwards, it must be negative. During the duration of this assignment, I have successfully and consistently demonstrated each of the competencies listed above along with many more.
