You have researched the treatment of children in the Industrial Revolution factories and in today’s similar situations called Sweat Shops. To do this, you examined various pictures of the treatment of and factory conditions for children working in factories in poorer countries. You also read about the treatment and conditions in the Gr. 9 Crossroads textbook. Then you read about the views of those treatments and conditions, both pro and con, by the people living in the areas where these treatments and conditions exist. Then you discussed those things and put the cons and your solutions to them. From there, you put three of your thoughts on those things into a protest pamphlet. Now, you are to examine the following core competencies and check off any three you think you have learned, used and accomplished. Put a check mark in the corresponding circle:
- I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.
When called upon during class to answer a question, I make sure to always try to provide the right answer. When the teacher is up talking and teaching I make sure to stay quite and listen, making sure to understand what we are currently learning.
2. I worked with others to achieve a goal.
When having trouble understanding or finding the answers to a question or needing help with the project or homework, I make sure I get the help that I need by asking my friends and peers for help. Once in contact, we all work together to achieve our goal.
3. I now understand that my safety in a textile workshop could be tied into how safety is maintained in the workshop environment.
When learning this unit, I understood that in order for me to feel save, the working environment should be considered a save place. There should be lots of lighting and ventilation, as will as access to to safety equipment such as helmets and gloves. The floor should be clean making room for me to step, and there should be no wires hanging from the roof or on the floor.
4. I now understand what is important to me in how I am treated and valued in a work environment and I can explain my values
I’m treated with respect and listened to when sharing ideas. When working in groups I either take the roll of the leader or I am in charge of the main ideas.
5. I now understand and can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems effectively and responsibly.
When working with different groups, I often see a lot of different ideas and perspectives. Since there so many diverse ideas, this usually leads to many conflicts such as figuring out the big main ideas or completing answers to assigned questions. One way that I’ve come to learn when resolving this problems is compromising. ‘Meet In the middle’ is another way to put it.
6. I did analyze evidence from the research I did and made judgements.
When completing the Child Labour Pamphlet I visit different websites and selected the relevant information to add to my pamphlet.
7. I can now understand and tell, after examining the economic facts of factory production in poorer countries, the dangers to workers in unsafe conditions, the mistreatment of child workers in those factories and the values child workers have in those conditions and treatment, the difference between facts and opinion.
The difference between facts and opinion is, for example, the fact is that child workers in factories are mistreated. People asking why they were mistreated are an example of opinions.
