Transforming Parabola

1. The parent function f(x) = x²

The parent function is the original quadratic equation. It opens upward has a vertex at (0, 0). There are no transformations because a = 1, h = 0 and k = 0. All other parabolas are transformations of this base graph.

2. A parabola that demonstrates a vertical shift up

When the k value is positive in the equation the parabola moves upward on the y-axis. The vertex changes from (0, 0) to (0, 4). The shape, direction and width of the parabola stay the same because a and h do not change.

3. A parabola that demonstrates a vertical shift down

When the k value is negative in the equation the parabola moves downward on the y-axis. The vertex becomes (0, –5). The size and direction of the parabola stay the same but it is moved lower on the graph.

4. A parabola that demonstrates a horizontal shift left

The parabola moves to the left. The vertex is (–10, 0). The sign inside the brackets of the equation is opposite to the direction it moves on the x axis. The parabola keeps its original shape.

5. A parabola that demonstrates a horizontal shift right

The parabola moves to the right. The vertex is (10, 0). The sign inside the brackets of the equation is opposite to the direction it moves on the x axis and the parabola keeps its original shape.

6. A parabola that demonstrates vertical stretch

When the a value is greater than 1 in the equation the parabola becomes narrower. This is called vertical stretch. This happens because each y value increases faster stretching the parabola away from the x axis making it look more narrow. For my parabola I have a = 9 which makes for a very narrow parabola.

7. A parabola that demonstrates vertical compression

If the a value is between 0 and 1 the parabola becomes wider. This is called a vertical compression. The graph flattens because each y value grows more slowly squishing the parabola toward the x-axis making it look more wide. For my parabola I have a = 0.05 making a very wide parabola.

8. A parabola that is reflected on the x-axis

When the a value is negative the parabola is reflected over the x axis. This reflection flips the graph upside down changing its direction from opening upward to opening downward while keeping the same width and vertex position. For my parabola I have a = -0.5 which makes the parabola open downward as the a value is negative.

I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way:
I did this by making my explanations for each parabola clear and easy to follow. I kept my answers concise but included all the important information so they made sense. I also organized my work carefully to show each step clearly and make it simple to understand how I got my results.

I showed this through paying attention to grammar and how I wrote my answers. I tried to explain my ideas in a way that my teacher and peers could easily understand. I made sure that my writing sounded clear and understanding so any person reading it would be able to follow my thinking and understand what I try to explain.

Science 10 – Core Competency Reflection Writing

Critical and Reflective Thinking:
I can evaluate and use well-chosen evidence to develop interpretations; identify alternatives, perspectives, and implications; and make judgments. For example, in the chemistry unit on balancing equations, I used evidence from experiments to understand how atoms stay the same in reactions and made judgments about how to balance equations the right way. I can examine and adjust my thinking. When I made mistakes balancing equations, I thought about them and fixed my work.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility:
I take risks and recognize that I may not be immediately successful. In the biology unit learning the parts of a DNA strand, I tried different ways to study even when it was hard. I examine my thinking, seek feedback, reassess my work, and adjust. After my teacher gave me feedback on quizzes, I changed how I studied and got better. I also planned my time to finish homework and study for tests.

Communicating:
I communicate confidently, using forms and strategies that show attention to my audience and purpose. I explain science ideas clearly in full sentences when I write or talk. I am an engaged listener; I ask good questions when it helps me learn more. Next year, I want to get better at making pictures and charts to show my ideas clearly.

I attached a picture of my physics worksheet about kinetic and potential energy going up and down a ramp. This worksheet shows how I used evidence and changed my thinking, which connects to my critical thinking skills.

How I was able to identify life challenges like expenses was from my previous knowledge. I learned this knowledge by my life situations with me and my family or even the movie pursuit of happiness that we watched in class which helped me learn about taxes. Using this information I realized I needed a pretty good paying job or else I would not have a living wage after taxes.

I can apply constructive strategies to navigate misunderstandings and conflicts. I chose this because in my future I will use some of the strategies I learned about budgeting to help me when I do not have a lot of money to live by and I will need budgeting to set up my future.

I chose this competency because I use perseverance to do my projects well and I expect setbacks and failure by realizing there was tax when I was halfway done the project I forgot about tax and did my project without it but when I realized I forgot to include it I had to rewrite a lot of the project with tax.

I can show sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself. I chose this because I get extremely happy and joyful after handing in a assignment and I take pride in my work.

this term i improved on my collaboration skills. I did this buy repetitive work with the same people to the point where i realize what each of our strong suits are like one of us might be good at washing dishes while another is good at knowing how long to keep our cookies in the oven. But over time me and my group improved at collaborating and it really shows as you can see in our most recent recipes how much better we did compared to the ones at the beginning of the term.

Some of my strengths this year for me have been my leadership. I chose this as my strength because usually when I am in groups and people are quite I sort of take over as I can tell that no one else wants to. I usually am the loudest and talking the most trying to bring people together. One of my weaknesses is my procrastination. Procrastinations can be something very small to something very big. For me I procrastinate a lot and it is starting to become a big issue. I am trying my best to finish everything on time and well as soon as I can. That is how I am trying to fix my struggles.

Something I am proud of is my mac and cheese competition lab. My core competency is I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. I chose this because when we where thinking of an idea for the project I thought of the bbq mac and cheese and I told my group about it in a way where it was not just my choice as if one of us did not want to do it we did not have to. We did very food in this lab as we got second place and I think this is one of the best things we have made in the food lab. That is why I am picking this lan and how it connects to the artifact.

So you know who your money is going to. If it is a struggling family business or a multi millionaire. It makes you think over what your buying and you might spend an extra couple bucks to support the struggling family business.

For me ethical works best on me because when I see somebody with a lot of following recommend something I feel naturally drawn towards it. Especially if I like the person that is recommending it. Like I would rather buy something like a face cleanser if a celebrity with smooth skin says its good vs something like logical where they talk about like 50% of dead skin removed and talk about statistics.

I need to work on this goal because one of my biggest weakness in school has been my procrastination. This has brought my grade down in many subjects and gives me stress. Is Violence justified in a Revolution?

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project 

They helped us answer questions as an AI’s perspective which is a bit different then mine and they helped me get research because it gave me more specefic answers then a article or browser.

Because I read the work the AI gave me and rewrote it in my own words and my own way of saying it so it does not look like a AI wrote it

I agree with the posisition I was in. I agree because I think that in a revolution that violence is justified because its for a better overall cause. People dying happens in every revolution and I believe that if no damage happens that people wont take it as serious as if there was. Thats why I agree with the position I had.

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by how much we relied on each other because if were a team one peson could of dragged the other down thankfully thats not the case since we both did what was asked but in simple group work its a lot less reliant on the other.
