Music Monday Reflection

1 Reflect on how these songs contribute to making the community or natural world a better place and identify how the lyrics actions call others to action and can work to make positive change.

Both songs contribute to making us listeners have an awareness of the Indigenous community and how they struggle to make their world and lives a better place. The Wreck Beach/Totem Park song shows us they thought their world “was heaven” and even though it is “the end of the world” they can make something meaningful as it ends. This song calls others to action in a peaceful way by just protesting while sitting on the beach. In the Cariboo Ghosts & Untold Stories song the community is the Indigenous protestors who work together. They take a harsher way in getting attention to their cause of how badly the Indigenous people need to be seen and heard and helped.

How do these songs represent that something is unfair? What is that “something”? Explain.

Both songs talk about how unfair the Indigenous people were treated in the past, and even still now today. The Wreck Beach song tells the listener about how life keeps moving forward and everything keeps changing but still the Indigenous people are treated badly by the white people. Their traditions and lands are still gone and not returned to them and they are still having a hard time today. In Cariboo Ghosts, the Indigenous people are trying to reconnect with their traditional ways but “get tripped up by real life” meaning the white people aren’t letting them be themselves because the white man ways is the right way and there is no room for the Indigenous history in the world today.

What emotions do these songs generate for you? Compare your emotions between each song. Which one is more compelling? And why?

The Wreck Beach song lyrics make the listener feel small and scared because of flashing police lights in the trees makes your heart beat faster and then the police are standing above them telling them to move out. The listener doesn’t feel like they can make a connection and stay in one place, they are lost and “stumbling in circles”. These lyrics are opposite of how the beat and tone of the music is. The music actually doesn’t give me a negative vibe and I really liked this song better. The Cariboo Ghosts song makes me feel like a rebel getting ready for a fight. This sounded like a speech getting people ready to rebel against the white world. I felt a bit sad and hopeless when I read this songs lyrics because the Indigenous people have to keep waiting for another day when things will be better for them.

What is important to each of the singers? What is the message they are trying to convey?

In Wreck Beach the singer talks about how life keeps changing and the Indigenous people need to remember who they are and keep traditions that are important to them alive. They know they have been treated unfairly and badly by the white man and have to fight in a peaceful way. In the Cariboo Ghosts the singer wants the Indigenous people to fight as a large group to keep their history and traditions alive. The song starts like the Indigenous people are feeling defeated and aren’t even trying and it changes into getting together to get a plan to finally be seen.

Using one of your similarities and differences (not the example one given), discuss in a short paragraph (6-10 sentences) how music can convey different perspectives on the same cause?

Music can convey different perspectives on the same cause. In the songs Wreck Beach and Cariboo Ghosts and Untold Stories both songs describe how Indigenous people should rebel and have their traditions seen and heard but they get there in different ways. The Wreck Beach song rebellion is more peaceful and the unfair treatment the Indigenous people face is not told to the listener in a direct way. We kind of have to figure it out ourselves. In Cariboo Ghosts the rebellion feels like it is going to be more violent and the unfair treatment the Indigenous people have gone through is easier to understand. They are called riff raff, feel regret and are always not getting what they need because they are always getting blocked by the white man. Both get treated by the white man’s world but they way they go about fighting it is different. The Wreck Beach song is a peaceful protest but still following the white man’s rules and the Cariboo Ghosts is a knowing about more bad unfair treatment and they are going to fix the problem by fighting.

Knife skills and safety Reflection

Knives are very important in when cooking. It is important to be safe when using one so you need to have good knife skills. A sharp knife should be used instead of a dull one because dull knives have a harder time cutting, and could possibly cut you if you force it too much. When you hold food, you curl your fingers inward to ensure they don’t get cut. I already knew how to safely use a knife, but I didn’t know of the basic cutting methods. I did learn how to better hold the knife so I had more control of it. You have to hold it by the back of the blade. It is important to use the right type of knife for the job you are doing. The proper type of cutting board like wood or plastic should be used so you don’t dull you knives. I also learned that it is important to have a wet paper towel under your cutting board so the cutting board doesn’t slip.

Ceramic Tile Reflection

This piece shows some of my interests which in this piece is nature photography. A skill I have developed to make my creative activities better are knowing what glazes to use because I keep using glaze to see how it looks and know which ones to use. It was actually a big risk in the process when I added glaze because I wasn’t sure if I would like how everything turned out, and it was my first time trying anything with clay. but think that darker stone still looks good.

Art piece reflection

This is my value drawing piece which is 4 different cars. this was my first time using Charcoal and Conte, and It is the piece in this class I am most proud of. I got the idea when I saw one of my friends drawings of lots of cars on his page, and I wanted to see how well I could draw cars. I took a risk by adding backgrounds because I finished the cars early, and it just had a blank white background. In my opinion, everything turned out great and I will definitely try to make more pieces out of Charcoal and Conte.

Spoken Language 11 Debating

Leave no room for debate in your writing – Keybridge Communications

My debate topic: Parents should limit their child’s technology use.

My resolution is take more notes on what my opponent is saying to better help me write a rebuttal speech. I will also spend 40 minutes to an hour to practice giving my speech, so I say it more clearly next time.

My debate reflection

My debate topic was parents should limit their child’s technology use, and my group was on the con side, saying they shouldn’t. Debating helped me learn more about the topics I was working with. My strengths were giving the speech, giving and answering cross questions. My stretch was rebuttal preparation.

My favorite quotes

Technology has made a positive impact on how we learn.

My debate partner hanbin

you don’t always need books to learn because you can look up anything you want on the internet. whether it is watching a video to see for yourself or accessing an audiobook, or Duolingo to learn a language.

Core Competency Reflection

Communication – An example of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen when I gave my speech.

Collaboration – When my partner and I were not productive, we shared our documents in order to get things moving in the right direction.

Critical and reflective thinking – I used to think people would never get off the phone, and now I know that the body gives signs to do something else, because I did research about it for my speech.

Creative thinking – An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas in the debate unit is at the beginning of my debate speech.

Curricular Competency Reflection

The 6 journals I wrote, were very helpful references for me writing the presentation. The journals were detailed enough that they kept me on track during my presentation. I just had to do a bit more work to tie everything together.

I understood that the top was about the story and the bottom was about the sub theme. It was good to see everything laid out and was a helpful map to follow.

Participating in the circle gave me better ideas of what to put it and I used some of the Ideas in my presentation. It was good to see things from someone else’s viewpoint.

I chose the graphic organizer because I am an artist and like to present things visually with artwork, pictures or photos. Painting would have been my first choice but it would have been hard to show the themes because I don’t know what people would be thinking when they looked at my art. I wouldn’t know if they thought the same as what I had in mind. I chose the photos because there were more pieces to show my puzzle of ideas.

Core competency Reflection

· I appreciate feedback on my presentations and prefer it comes in the form of written comments of what I was good with and what needs work. I need to hear what I can improve on when I am presenting because we do a lot of presenting in school and out in the world and I need to know that I am communicating clearly.

· When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I step away and try going outside. I go for or a walk and try using my creativity by taking pictures. Other times I will sit down and draw a picture or paint. Focusing on details in art clears my mind of everything but the art.

· I can describe how taking Earth Science in Grade 11 relates a lot to the novel I chose to read. Climate change was a big part of my course and we learned how everything is connected together. When one thing is changed, everything gets changed somehow. Climate change was like a character in the book because it affects the people characters in their everyday lives.

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My Inquiry question is “Can I use Autodesk MAYA efficiently without an in-person instructor to teach me?” The focus has kind of changed because I have been using different forms of art instead of using much of Maya, because I haven’t been motivated to use it. I can only use Maya at home but I struggle with self motivating myself when there are other distractions at home.

I use my cent time for every week on IDS. I do the bare minimum which is just filling out the monthly log.

YouTube has been the most helpful for me using MAYA. However, most of the videos have and use a tool I don’t have. I seem to do better if I have an assignment given to me to do with certain tasks that must be done.

I am having difficulty finding time to use Maya. I might end up using blender instead of MAYA because I have it in one of my classes. In March I will try to watch at least one You Tube Maya oriented video tutorial every week to try get myself back on track. If the material doesn’t work, I will try to use Blender instead. I will have to see what my results are.

An opportunity has been presented to me. I can apply to work at an actual digital animation studio for one week during spring break. I need to make an application that shows my different skill levels in animating, art, painting and drawing. I will work on this application and a mini portfolio so I can apply. This opportunity is part of my personal and social core competency.

I will present projects that I have made and show tools that I have used.

I plan to do something creative as a career, so I will probably use some of the tools I have learned but maybe not all of them in my Capstone next year. I may have to shift my focus as to what my presentation will look like.

metal work reflection

I am taking Mr. Petersons metal work 10/11. I am new to working with metal, and I think Mr. Peterson is a great teacher. The only things I have done in class (so far) is a few Quizes and the dice project. I am still not done the dice project as I don’t know the next few steps. I have measured the pieces of the two dice, and drilled the holes in both sides, and cut them up with the Iron worker. I don’t know what to do next as some of the holes are off center and some of the pieces are more and less than 2×2 incher, and there is still marking on both sides of each piece. even though I have gone through a demonstration of how the oxy acetylene torch, I am still not entirely sure how it works, and I am nervous to use it on my own.

Stock market: Self-Assessment

Curricular Response

My best stock I bought was Alibaba group which went up by 29.46% (+$26.27)

My worst stock I bought was The Gap which decreased in value by 2.70% (-$0.35)

My portfolio which started at $100,000 is now worth. $100,917.65

My risk strategy was to have very little exposure to the stock market. I kept hearing about inflation and that we are supposed to be going into a recession. I chose one stock that is a popular online retailer because I think people are still online shopping right now. I was a bit surprised that the Gap value dropped, but it was only a little bit of a percentage drop, so overall, that was an OK pick. The market is very volatile right now, so staying in cash I think was a safe strategy because I don’t know when all the bad stuff is going to hit the stock market.

I could have balanced my portfolio a little bit more by adding some stocks from other fields. These include: oil and gas, gold or dividend paying stocks.

I really only looked at stocks whose businesses I already knew of. I didn’t do much research. My best performing stock was an accidental pick that did really well. I got beginner’s luck with that one. It was fun to see how you can make money but not actually have to do much physical work. I will invest some of my money when I am older an will try to become more wealthy.
