Reflecting on My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

This year I reached many of the goals I set before going into grade 9. My goals were to complete all of my assignments, preferably on time, and get good, stable grades, and I was able to achieve that. My grades stayed at A’s and Hight B’s, which was good, especially because I wasn’t used to the work load. I joined the Centennial Track Team, which helped me make new friends and it was fun to be apart of something. I was able to overcome my challenges with certain subjects by booking my teachers for flex to get extra help, and by getting a peer tutor to help me with homework, and to prepare for tests.

My Favorite Website

https://www.youtube.com

My favorite website is YouTube because you can look up anything you don’t understand, and you can find a video to explain it, If I don’t understand a math concept, I can search up a lesson that I can re-watch as many times as I need.

My Favorite Video

This is my favorite video because it shows how much I enjoy doing work in the library and being productive. I like to book the library for flex to get extra help and get work done. I like the fact I can borrow laptops whenever I need to use one if I forget mine.

My Favorite Image

This is my favorite image because I was able to share what I had, but didn’t need, to the less fortunate. This was a really touching experience as it made me realize how much I actually have, and that i need to be more grateful.

My Favorite Quote

“You Only Live Once”

This is my favorite quote because every time I want to take a risk, or join something fun, I think of this quote. I might as well try everything I can in school, as I only have one life and I want to make the most of it.

Justification

I believe that the 3 year GIC of 4,.2% was the smartest option because at the end of the 3 years, there is a guaranteed return, unlike stocks. Stocks vary each year. For all you could know, for the next three years, the stocks could be in the deep negatives. Investing in stocks is good for long term goals, like gaining money for retirement, because stocks always have their ups and downs, but a 3 year long stock investment is super risky and you arent guaranteed to get the money you need back.

Collaboration and Contributions

I found working with my group was difficult because we were all a bit shy and it was hard sharing our ideas, however we were able to complete the work eventually by writing out our ideas. I contributed to the group by calculating the numbers on my calculator and giving the solutions to my group to write on the board. My group all agreed and came up with the same solutions, so we really didnt have much to dicuss. I would give myself a 3 out of 4 for participation, I think I could’ve shared more ideas with my group.

Core Competency Reflection

  • If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to get everyone to modify their ideas so it works for the rest of the group.
  • I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see laughter, smiles, work getting done quickly and peers supporting eachother.
  • I make an effort to include missing voices/ perspectives by checking in on everyone in my group and making sure each individual gets a chance to express their ideas.
  • If the group is not productive, we can ask a teacher for help and support in order to get things moving in the right direction.
  • I can recognize different points of view and can disagree respectfully.

Enola Holmes: The Movie

My Movie

Plot, Character, Setting and Mood

For my movie, since there wasn’t a clear description of what my character looked like, I looked up the actress of Enola in the movie, and based it on her. For choosing plot points, I just took the most significant/important moments that really stood out and describe the situation well. To know how to figure out the setting in a story, look for clues to put together to find the setting. Look at slang they use, popular foods they eat and weather patterns to get and idea of what country this story takes place in. The word mood describes the feeling you have while watching a movie/read a book. If there is music in the background of a movie, it should match the scene well to make you feel either more emotional, or more happy. Music has a big impact on the mood of a movie, the wrong choice of music can make the scene completely different.

Core Competency Reflection

  • I appreciate feedback on things that I can do better on and prefer it comes in the form of recognizing the hard work I have put in, but giving me ideas to improve my work without harshly criticizing me.
  • When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I like to walk around or listen to music while I work as it helps me focus and makes homework more enjoyable.
  • An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when me and my friends were doing a group project where we had to do an egg drop challenge, and my friend suggested we have padding on the outside, I said we should have on the outside, so we used each others idea’s and came to a conclusion to build off both ideas and have padding on the inside and outside.
