Why do you think Japan is so creative with its sandwiches? How do these compare to the sandwiches available in Canada? Japan’s variety of sandwiches is mainly attributed to the rich culture and the progressive society Japan is built on. One of the most popular sandwiches in japan are the fruit cream sandwiches. Traditionally sandwiches are savoury usually including some sort of protein, veggies, and condiments. But Fruit cream sandwiches are more or a dessert, shattering the norm and creating a much more fresh and sweet sandwich. Compared to Canada, our sandwiches are much more traditional, strictly being savoury. We have yet to explore the world of sweet sandwiches
What is the most creative meal you have made or had? Would it taste good in sandwich form? The most creative meal I’ve ever made was a sirloin 짜장면. I seared sirloin steak, cut it into cubes, then added it to black bean noodles. I do not think this would work in a sandwich as the sauce and noodles would have made the bread soggy creating a less enjoyable texture.
What sandwich type are you most excited to try? (Upload a photo if you make one!) A5 wagyu Cutlet Sandwich. When my family visited japan i had the opportunity to try this sandwich in Tokyo. The crunchy bread followed with the melt in the mouth A5 wagyu paired with their Katsu sauce was unimaginable. 10/10 sandwich (Wayyyy to expensive tho).
If offered by him, would you eat a part of Anpanman’s head? Why?? 10000000%, growing up as a little kid my sisters and I would watch 호빵맨 every weekend!!! I remember him splitting pieces of his head off and as a kid I didn’t see a problem with it but as I’m typing this out i am becoming slightly more concerned. That being said if i had the oppurtunity of taking a bite out of 호빵맨 head i would absolutely take it.
What you did well and how you can improve your Japanese study habits (min 2 sentences)
During this semester, I believe I did well in handing in all of my assignments to the best of my abilities. To improve my study habits, I can designate a specific time to study during the day to better spread out my consumption of the material.
To celebrate an accomplishment such as doing well on my unit test, I rewarded myself with a fantastic meal prepared by my uncle.
I appreciate feedback on my sentence structures. and prefer it to come in the form of. In constructive criticism, I would like to be guided through the process of writing sentences and be explained how and why it works.
When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I took a step back and reassessed what I was doing, I asked my peer tutors for assistance when I couldn’t figure it out for myself, I went online to gain a new perspective, and if everything else failed I asked Ms. Illing. To advance the development of my ideas.

How does school in Japan compare to Canada? Is there anything they do in Japan, that you wish we did at Centennial?
I believe Centennial should adopt the same hygienic ways as the Japanese. In Japanese schooling, it is mandatory for all students to bring their tooth brush, and wash after every meal. It may be slightly inconvenient for some students but the benefit of freshly washed teeth would be massive for our general health and cleanliness.
Do you think that students should have more responsibilities at school like cleaning duty? Why?
Yes, teenagers these days take no responsibility to take care of themselves and rely to heavily on the people around them. I believe that with these added responsibilities, that teenagers would significantly benefit from some extra responsibilities. This would build a skills such as independence, and organization.
How lucky are you in じゃんけん?Would you be able to snag leftovers?
I am trash at じゃんけん and would get absolutely nothing for leftovers.
I chose this mascot as It holds sentimental value. During, my 4th-grade year my family and I took a trip to Japan, where I was able to see Kumamon in person. I believe many find it adorable with its large frame and derpy expression, making it adored by everyone that comes across it.
The difference between Canadian Mascots and Japanese ones is, Canadian mascots or more traditionally a person or an animal, but in Japan, anything goes. Whether it’s inappropriate body parts or a literal pile of pink poop. They are still adored by everyone.
I believe mascots are so popular in Japanese culture due to, how embedded it is inside their society. A massive Japanese attraction is the Yuruchara Mascot summit. Here mascots from all over the country come together and get to have fun and lift the communities spirits. I believe Canada would greatly benefit from a festival like this. People here are generally stressed, anxious, and unhappy. We could all use a day to just enjoy ourselves.
If Coquitlam had a mascot I believe it would be a snowy mountain, with teardrops. To symbolize the constant rainy weather.
I decided on The Oni. After reviewing information on the topic, I found an innate curiosity about how it functioned and what impact it has on society. I am also a fan of the character itself I believe it was designed well and looks fascinating.
Name some characteristics and provide a background history/summary of your Yokai.
The Oni is a significant part of Japanese culture; being rooted deep inside mythology and folklore. They are described as large and scary with a variety of colours. Most commonly seen in folklore as tall, blue/red-skinned, horned, crazy-haired, and fanged monsters. They wear a loincloth made of the pelts of great beasts. Every Oni wields overwhelming strength and constitution. There are countless stories about the oni but all have one thing in common; in every folklore, the Oni is seen as the Villan. The root of the name “oni” means concealed/hidden. It is said all spirits and ghosts originated as Oni. Female demons are known by another name “Kijo”.
Do you think Japanese Yokai differ from Western monsters and mythical creatures? Explain.
I believe Japanese Yokai differ greatly from western style monsters. The Japanese yokai have much greater/rich lore, and most western monsters are known to have shallow history, writing, and pretty repetitive themes there’s not much build-up for the background to allow the reader to be invested. I enjoy Japanese mythology much more as the storytelling is much richer and I enjoy the fresh perspectives presented when reading.
Do you believe in Yokai, monsters, ghosts, or mythical creatures? Why or why not?
I personally do not believe in ghosts, yokai, monsters or mythical creatures; which Is ironic as I identify myself as a Christian. The existence of these creatures would be detrimental to the society we live in. When something so preposterous is seen to be reality, the peoples idea of sense is skewed. People fear what can’t be explained, fear causes panic, and panic causes chaos. The existence of these creatures would lose sense in the world.
Growing up, I was a very independent kid. At the start of kindergarten, I’d take my dog outside, feed him, and care for him. As a kid, my parents were always out working so I’d have to rely on myself or my older sisters to keep me fed and taken care of. I walked to school every day and held myself accountable for any work. In third grade, I’d go out and run errands for my sisters, snacks/groceries etc. I learnt how to do dishes, cook and take care of the house. Regardless of age, I believe doing/learning how to do chores are extremely important to building one’s character and preparing yourself to become a self-providing individual.
After watching independent Children, I realized I related to the Ando family. Growing up, I faced the same challenge of independence that Noe went through. I believe independence is necessary, especially for children. As a society nurturing these habits at a young age is significant for adulthood.
