Digital footprint

(word art)

Why is being safe online important.

Our digital footprints will always exist; even if you delete all your accounts and information, it will always be there. So, that’s why it’s important to keep your digital footprint positive and private. Our digital foot print can even affect us in adulthood when potential employers look into our digital history. By making responsible choices with our online activity we can prevent people from accessing our private information and using negative online activity later in our lives.

How do I stay safe online?

Staying safe online isn’t just passwords and personal information, its also about what is being posting and the intention behind it. Passwords are definitely a big part of online safety, by making sure your passwords are private and secure and changed often you will be able to keep your footprint positive and safe. Remembering to ask those in the photos for permission to post before you post ensures that everyone is comfortable with the photos, content and intention behind the photo. Everyones level of online safety is different so asking before posting someone else’s content is really important.

Negative VS Positive

An example of a negative part of social media are screen shots , if a screen shot is taken of a private messages or photo there’s really no way of knowing how many people its been shared it with. This means the digital footprint of a private photo or message will be out there for ever. A positive to social media is that you can learn more about the community and people in it. You can also find community support, connection and ways to volunteer to support others. A very negative side to being online and social media could be cyber bulling. Cyber bulling can affect your mental health, just like it affected Amanda Todd, who was only 15 when she committed suicide due to cyber bullying. Amanda shared screen shoots, private photos and information with people she didn’t know. Her Mother has been educating parents and teens on the negative and positive sides of social media and digital imprints. Carol Todd has been fighting for justice for her daughter since it was discovered Amanda was being cyber bullied and threatened by her peers and a person from a different country.
