R1- Independent Children

My earliest memory of doing a chore or being independent was when I was around 5 years old and i would make myself a very simple breakfast of toast and cereal. I don’t really have a set list of chores to do, i usually just do a chore if my parents ask me to.

i think its great that Japanese kids are so independent and free, and I completely agree with the idea of having them go to school by themselves and coming home by themselves at such young age. And since Japan is such a safe country and the people help the kids on their way to school i understand why parents aren’t very worried. However, I don’t think it would be such a good idea doing something like that in North America as there’s a much higher crime rate and I wouldn’t trust people here as much.

I think my first moment of real independence was when i was about 8 years old and my parents bought me a cellphone and I was allowed to walk home by myself for the first time and I didn’t really think about having my first phone but it was quite the milestone for me. I didn’t need to take the bus or anything like that until I was a bit older though.
