French 9 – Assessment

Throughout this semester in French 9, I feel I’ve improved on participating in class and raising my hand to speak more often. At the beginning of the semester, I didn’t do this much but as we started progressing I got more comfortable with speaking out. My classmates also helped because there wasn’t much judgement within the classroom. I still find verb conjugations challenging when speaking out loud. I can easily do them on paper and in assignments but when it comes to having conversations, it’s quite challenging to use the right conjugation on the spot. What surprised me was how much difficult relearning French was after I had lost some of it when discontinuing French Immersion.

This semester we did a Family tree project. I made a tree of both sides of my family and put it onto a poster board. I think what went well for me was my layout. I kept it neat and printed everything out so that it was easy to read. I wrote everything out and planned the whole poster board before I started gluing everything down. Next time, I would make the layout more “tree-like” so that it would better resemble a family tree. In terms of core competencies, for communication I used the 1st prompt “This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences”. I went through family albums and make sure to find pictures where it was obvious which family member was being showcased. For the thinking competency, I chose the 8th prompt “I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I…” I had to completely change the position of the people on the tree because it wasn’t fitting onto the poster board. This was tedious but in the end it worked out. For the personal and social competency I chose the 1st prompt “When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I..” When I got frustrated, I took a breath and took a step away from the project and then re-centered myself and started working again. Overall this project was fun to work on.
