This artifact is my strawberry DNA lab. In this lab we mixed frozen strawberries, dish soap, and salt and then we put it in a test tube with alcohol to extract the DNA. This worked because the dish soap broke down the cell wall and nucleus, while the salt broke down the proteins surrounding the DNA. Then the alcohol could bring the DNA to the top because the DNA isn’t soluble in alcohol but the rest of the cell is. When I first tried the lab, the DNA wasn’t rising to the top. Me and my partner had to add more alcohol and wait until the DNA finally showed up. During this lab I clearly demonstrated the core competency “communication”. I used the prompts below to back up this statement.
“I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.” I demonstrated this by being interactive in this lab by asking the right questions to ensure all the steps were taken properly. This was also demonstrated with my partner as we had to communicate who was doing what so that our lab worked out.
“When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I… to advance the development of my idea”
When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I take what has set me back and learn from that to better improve my lab, project or any work that may be. One setback was that the DNA was not rising to the top. My partner and I re-evaluated what we did, what we needed to achieve, and implemented what we had to in order to have the DNA rise.
“I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…”
I know the group is working well together when I hear/see everything coming together. When me and my groupmates work together effectively there is usually little to no conflict and the task at hand gets done quicker. Everyone builds on everyone else’s ideas, supports one another and the work gets done to a good quality.
We chose Canva for our ad because I have used Canva before so I am familiar with it. It is an easy platform to use. We initially tried using PowerPoint but it was too complex and the features weren’t easily accessible. The ingredients we wanted to choose weren’t within our $35 budget so we had to give up extra ingredients such as sprinkles. This overall helped us because now our sales pitch is more effective due to the fact that we only used fruit as toppings. We decided that the selling price would have to give us income of at least a dollar per cupcake. The cost of making our cupcakes was $1.44 each, therefore we made our selling price $2.50. Our print ad is effective because it sticks to one color combination but we put different parts of information in different shades so that the readers feel the need to look at all of it. The red and pink shades fall in line with colors of berries, this evokes the taste of berries in the consumers mind. The picture also accurately shows what our product is. We also used adjectives in our description to sell the product to our consumers (fresh, deluxe, premium).
“I work with others to achieve a goal.” I demonstrated this by working well with Julia and communicating our ideas to form an effective print ad without any disputes.
“I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others.” I demonstrated this by bouncing off of Julia’s ideas to create new and better ones. This improved our project and we were happy with the end result.
“I can use my own personal strengths and abilities to do this assignment.” I demonstrated this by using my past knowledge of Canva and inputting that into my print ad to improve the quality and presentation of it.
For this project, I’m planning a special day for my mom. We are going to sleep in until 10, and then go for breakfast. I have chosen Ricky’s all-day grill as or breakfast venue. When we are there, we will order buttermilk pancakes and waffles as that is what we usually order. My moms loves to have a good coffee so after breakfast, we will stop to get coffee from Starbucks before we head to the nail salon. After we grab our coffee, we will go to the nail salon and get two fresh sets – one for each of us. Then we will head out to lunch. At lunch, we get chipotle burrito bowls. After lunch, its time for a little sweet treat so we go to get Rocky Point ice cream. With our ice cream, we will walk around the park for a bit and then go to the movies, where we will watch Kung Fu Panda 4. Then we will go to dinner at Joeys. I will order a tuna poke bowl, and she always orders blackened chicken. I have budgeted for and already bought ourselves matching bathing suits. After dinner, I will give her the bathing suits and we will go into the hot tub at home in our matching bathing suits and then go to bed.

Breakfast – Waffles and pancakes from Ricky’s all day grill
This special day, I spent $299.34, that’s 99.34% of my budget. If I only had $100 to spend, I wouldn’t spend anything on myself and only pay for her. I would also incorporate more free activities such as sightseeing. If I had $500 I would do more high end activities and buy more gifts.
Reflection:
Why did you choose this specific person? Why do you believe they deserve to be celebrated?
I chose my mom because she’s fun to hang out with and we like to do things together. It is important to me that we spend as much time as we can together. My mom does alot for me and its important to me that I celebrate her when I can.
Why did you choose to spend your budget the way you did? What factors went into your decisions?
I picked activities that my mom enjoys because the day was for her. The activities I chose were suited for 2 people and provided opportunities for conversation and connecting. This feeds into my values of spending time with the ones you love.
Optional: If you think your project deserves an Extending score, describe what you did that went above and beyond the project requirements.
I think my project deserves an extending because I did double the amount of purchases that were required and I did multiple food purchases and activities. I also added color and pictures into my Edublog.
I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.
This competency was demonstrated by the use of Canva and sorting the information into the storyline of the comic. I had to organize this information within the story so that everything was implemented clearly.
I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to.
This competency was demonstrated because since it is a storyline comic, the audience intended for it could be a student that is learning contract law. This can also be used to educate adults who are visual learners as the pictures help relate the words to real life circumstances.
I can form new ideas to create new things.
This competency was used when I was thinking outside the box to try and express my ideas through the storyboard. I had to use new ways of showing what I was referring to within contract law. An example of that was the ability to relate the pictures to words.
I inquire into and present on topics of interest and topics related to my studies.
This competency was demonstrated when I implemented what we learned in business 9 this unit and presented it in my storyboard.
This year I overcame many challenges I faced in my first semester of high-school. My transition to high-school was much harder than I thought it would be. I felt overwhelmed and this caused me to feel unmotivated as I felt there was so much work to do. I ended up procrastinating and not doing the work. Eventually, with the help of my family and teachers, I realized I had to get the work done and it wasn’t just going to go away. I asked for help and extensions and plugged away at it slowly. I learned and implemented some strategies that helped me get my work done. As I started to do better in my classes, I learned what was expected and required of me. This, in turn, motivated me to do better and better.
By the end of my first semester, I reached my goal of getting “Proficient” in all my Semester 1 classes. I started some off them at “Emerging” and “Developing” and I made up my mind that I needed to get Proficient in the classes. I worked tirelessly to achieve “Proficients” and “Extendings” in the assignments I handed in order to bring my final mark up. I have been working in implementing this work ethic this second semester as well. I have learned my stretches are time management and avoidance. I sometimes take more time than I should or need to on certain assignments and this leaves me with little time to get every thing done. Also I manage time poorly by not starting on and working on assignments right away when they are assigned. When I fall behind, I resort to avoidance and it becomes even harder for me to complete assignments on time. Time management is a critical skill I need to work on, as with my busy lacrosse
schedule where I train seven days a week, I need to ensure I stay on top of my school work. This is something I would like to work on as I know in post secondary this important skill will define my ability to succeed.
A key difference in my learning and the learning of my peers is that I plan and hope to go to a Post-Secondary Institution in the United States that has a lacrosse program. This has affected my first year in high school as I feel I don’t have as much time to adjust to high school as many of my peers. The U.S. colleges look at grades from Grade 9 as well and so not only do I have to choose my post secondary program early, I also have to ensure my grades are good as soon as I started Grade 9. This was a challenge for me as I had no time to adjust to high school from middle school.
For this assignment as well, I should have asked for an extension on my Due Date before it was due. However, I didn’t ask for it until after it was due when I realized I needed more time than I had initially thought in order to do what I thought was a good job. I have learned a lot about communication with my teachers, and I hope to continue to build on myself as I have a lot of growing and learning to do. I would like my teachers to know that I am working hard and doing my best to improve, and thank them for their support and patience.
This website is useful for education because it helps students memorize terms and concepts. You input terms and definitions, and it creates digital flashcards and can generate practice tests. This is particularly helpful when studying for tests and exams. Quizlet is free to use but you can pay for extended features of this website.
I have used Quizlet for Socials and French last semester and Science, so far this semester. I have told many others about it as I find it so useful for me and my learning style and i hope it can help someone else as well.
This video is useful for education because it provides a tool for studying. The “blurting method” works when you read all your notes, put them away, and then write down everything you can remember on a separate piece of paper, not using your notes. You then take that blank piece of paper and fill in the gaps that you missed by using your notes you took. This helps to fill in the gaps in your memory as well, tying different pieces of your memory together and creating new learning pathways in your brain. The “blurting method” is a way to practice active recall, and this helps memorize notes. On this TikTok page, there are also other useful hacks and tips for studying and note taking.
A Useful Educational Image
In Business 9, we are learning about different types of businesses. I find this image useful for education overall and also specifically my own learning because this infographic gives a clear definition on the differences between the types of businesses and has an image for visual reference. Infographics like these are very useful for visual learners such as myself because it helps to match words to an image.
I have found this infographic to be informative, concise, and uses language that is easy to remember for me. I also find the images that go with it help me to remember and also the layout of how it goes from a sole-ownership to a co-op me to remember the different types of businesses and the structure of each.
An Inspirational Quote
“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” —Dr. Seuss
This quote was always read to me in elementary school and it has resonated with me. My elementary school principal Mr. Passaglia used to read it to us at the end of every school and I especially remember it when I graduated elementary school in grade 5. It reminds me of how far I have come slowly year after year and how I can keep learning and building on this year after year. The fact that I still feel it is relevant is a testament to how it has impacted me and my views on learning and how its is a lifelong process.

I had originally handed this assignment in and got a developing, I wasn’t happy with my mark so I redid it. It used to be bland and my pictures did not match with my plot point but I didn’t realize it until I checked it over after it was handed in. I waited to receive my mark and knew I could’ve done better. So that’s what I did. I learned how to make animations in this movie and and how to make all those animations align with one another. I took the time to research online how to do this and asked for help from peers. Once this was part was completed, I took the time to change up the color scheme to make it more visually appealing and make sure it matched the theme that I was going for. Overall I learned how to use PowerPoint to a higher standard and can now take future projects above and beyond.

“When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I… to advance the development of my idea”
When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I take what has set me back and learn and grow from that to advance the development of my ideas.
“Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are…”
Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are the use of transitions and animations in PowerPoint, and making sure the visual side of the project matches the written side of it. I have also developed a better understanding of Edublog; I was able to the post more appealing and easier to follow with formatting changes. I also added color to my Edublog so that it matched with my project.
“One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is…”
One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is listening to music. I have trouble staying focused and I have been trying different activities and listening to music helps keep my mind on the task at hand.
How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project
Using AI in the project helped with generating ideas when I was stuck. It gave me additional topics and thoughts to think about and include when I was running out of ideas or stuck on one track. I also found AI was very helpful as it also acted as a second perspective on the question. Even though I had my thoughts and opinions on a topic, AI often presented another viewpoint or another point that made me think about the topic in further detail.
How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI
I ensured that the work that I created consisted of only general ideas from the AI. The AI gave me a more solid understanding of the question. This allowed me to formulate my own opinion and I then backed my opinion with facts that I learned on my own. I find that for an opinion piece, it was not difficult to ensure that my work was my own, as I had to explain why I felt a certain way about a topic.
Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?
I somewhat disagree with my position. I had to argue that violence was justified in protests. I don’t agree agree with promoting violence, but sometimes you also have to find a way to to bring immediate attention to a topic that poses a threat to citizens. It becomes a challenge to agree or disagree with a hard-fast position on such a controversial topic as there are so many gray areas that emerge as discussions go on.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…
My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include research on various platforms, the use of AI, communication and collaboration with my group-mates. I find using multiple strategies helps me to get the most information. I can then sort through the information and pick and choose the relevant pieces. I also find different platforms have a different style of presenting the information, which gives me different perspectives on a topic.
When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I…
When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, i find my communication style changes. I am more focused on the task at hand, and my conversations are more direct and relevant to the task that needs to be completed. I also find I revert to come forms of communication that the other person prefers, For example, I don’t often use Instagram as a communication platform to collaborate. I didn’t know my partner well, and she suggested using Instagram as a collaboration platform. I was open to this as I have Instagram, but I definitely noticed that my communication style was different.
“I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself”
I had initially turned in a project I knew was not good quality. I am proud of this project and I feel a sense of accomplishment now that it is completed to a higher standard.
“I can persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning and behavior”
I find completing assignments on time to be challenging. I put myself in a position where I had to take ownership of my mistakes and fix them.
“I can develop a body of creative work over time”
It took me a long time to create this body of work. It took longer than it should have. I have developed from the previous project I handed in.
“I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas”
Over this last week, I persevered to get this project done. I knew my parents were disappointed and i stayed up late to develop my ideas and finish the project.
“I can work with others to achieve a goal.”
I need to work on working with others to achieve a goal (my teachers, parents, and peers). This means keeping them in the loop on what is going on and moving forward with that together.
We use the internet everyday – this means we must take measures to ensure we are safe online. Online safety should always be #1 priority. This means if you come across a site that seems shady or asks for too much information, don’t use it. Even when using trusted sites, there’s always the chance that you can get hacked. This means you must create strong and unique passwords that are only known by you, and they should include numbers, symbols, lowercase and uppercase letters. There’s also various other ways you can get hacked; viruses can be downloaded and they can compromise your data and leak information. To prevent this, you can install trusted antivirus protection on your device. Staying safe also means being positive online, This means posting positive content, commenting positive things etc. This is especially important when applying for jobs and university as they usually do a background check on your digital footprint and if its negative then the chance you you being accepted or hired diminishes. Being negative online also counts when in chat groups. While it says private it can still be screenshot even after deleted. Steps you can take to be safe and positive online are verifying the safety of links before opening them, updating the passwords of apps, being careful of what you put out online and staying educated on the dangers of being online. By practicing these safety measures, you can minimize the risks associated with being online and ensure a safer and more secure digital experience.
Snapchat
Nowadays it’s hard to come by a youth that doesn’t use Snapchat. One of the primary features of Snapchat is that everything deletes after 24 hrs. This gives users a sense of false security when sending snaps and chats because even if it deletes from snapchat, it can still be traced back to your digital footprint. The app tricks you into thinking that no one can screenshot or screen record without it notifying you, when in reality anyone can use another phone or 3rd party apps. Hacking is something else to be aware of. Snapchat has implemented safety features but there’s always a chance that your account can get hacked and any personal information and anything you have saved can be leaked publicly, negatively impacting your digital footprint. Another one of Snapchat’s features that compromises safety is SnapMaps. SnapMaps is a map where you can see all your friends’ locations if they share them with you. It is advised not to turn SnapMaps on because unintended parties may see it and use that against you. Online predators are also something to be aware of as extortion is very common with Snapchat users. Extortion is the use of threats or manipulation for something in return. Often, predators will threaten to leak personal information or private photos or videos if demands are not met. Ways to prevent this is to not take or send any private photos and to make sure all your personal information is kept safe. Nothing can be sent or received if you haven’t added back another snapchat user. A lot can be prevented if you don’t add back people that aren’t trusted and that you don’t know.
TikTok
One of the biggest concerns with TikTok is personal information and locations being leaked. Locations can be leaked through identifiable landmarks in the background of videos. When making TikTok videos be sure that there’s no street signs, shops or restaurants in sight. TikTok collects a significant amount of data through the posts you like and the permissions you grant. Be cautious of the posts and comments that you like because TikTok will personalize your feed to match those so that you scroll for longer and get hooked. Anything you like or comment can also be traced back to your account and traced further to your digital footprint. On TikTok, anything you post cannot be fully deleted. Once you hit the post button, a web address with attach itself to the post and can be accessed. Other users can also screen record or save your video, so be aware of what you post and double check videos. Fundraisers and shops are also run on TikTok. Refrain from buying or interacting with these shops or donating if they aren’t completely trusted sources. This includes giving your email address or credit card number. TikTok is one of the most popular online social media platforms among youth around the world. Safety must be a top priority for all those using TikTok.

Personal/Social Competency Reflection
“I make digital ethical choices such as (consider commenting on others’ posts, thinking about what you put online) in order to…”
I make digital ethical choices when posting something and commenting on my friends posts in order to keep my digital footprint positive. This is important because anything I put online can be traced back to my name, even if it is deleted or private. That affects my digital footprint and may show when someone is doing a background check on me.
“I know that my digital footprint can have both positive and negative consequences, including…so I adjust my actions to…”
I know that my digital footprint can have both positive and negative consequences, including anything that I post, comment, or even send to anyone in chat groups or DMs. Given that, I think twice before clicking send or post and if I realize that it should not be put out online then I will change it or just not post or send it at all.
“My online support network (ex. Teachers’ TEAMS pages, Tech Leadership Edublog, Career Centre web-site, Library web-site, Centennial school web-site, etc) is helpful to me because they…”
My online support network is helpful to me because when I need help, information is always there. This works better because you don’t have to wait for another day to contact your teachers or peers in person, you can contact them online. In some cases you may not even need to contact them as information will be already available.
Determining our character, setting and mood for the movie really forced us to think outside of the box and analyze the play in depth. First, we had to identify the components of the play that hinted at what our character looked like or what the setting and mood was. Finding out the appearance of our avatar was the first thing we did as it felt like it was the easiest out of all. Bottom was talked about a lot throughout the play. Putting together his appearance from bits and pieces of other characters’ descriptions of him was a fun challenge. Next, we moved to the setting of our movie. By determining the setting of this story, I learned that you can’t pinpoint one setting to a whole story. There are different settings within the story and they can change drastically. The setting in our movie changes almost every slide so that it can properly fit the scene. This made for a lot of scene changes and movement of characters, but it was essential to make sense. Each setting came with its own mood depending on what was happening in the scene. We had to take that into account when making our movie and picking out images. For the background, we picked medieval music because it matched the play’s vibe and because the play was based so long ago. The tune evokes the mood of being back in that time. In literature and movies, the word mood means the feeling that is experienced by the characters and the reader. Finally, our movie has a lot of different shades of green incorporated into the slides. The greens used felt soft, so it had a warm, rustic vibe. The colors used were intentionally used in order to give the feeling that this play was old. The images were intentionally kept black and monotone, so they didn’t take away from the greens used. It was purposely kept “un-colorful” to keep the overall feeling to be old and consistent through the play. One of the most interesting things about this project was that I got a new perspective on the play from only Bottom’s point of view. Initially, we were looking at the play with an overall lens. From a digital literacy perspective, I learned how to add some extras into the project to improve its visual appearance and make a better product. Focusing in on Bottom’s perspective was an interesting change that I would have never considered if it wasn’t for the project. Overall, this was a fun project even though it came with challenges.
Core Competency Reflection
An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is…
When me and Caden were making this movie, we often built upon each others ideas when talking about the paragraph and sentence structure within the slides. This really works because putting our ideas together made our finished product better then if we would have done it alone or individually. With Caden’s help I was able to better explain my thoughts because he added onto them so that they made more sense on our PowerPoint.
I appreciate feedback on… and prefer it comes in the form of…
I appreciate feedback on how I could improve for the next time a project like this comes around. I know for myself, I need to improve on handing it in on time. I appreciate the feedback that has been provided via teams. I have taken that feedback and worked to improve my project. I don’t have a preference on what form I receive feedback in.
Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…
These examples cannot be seen though work but my work mirrors it. If me and my groupmate had not communicated then we would have done the same slides, missed parts of the project etc. We communicated who was doing what and that helped set us up for success. I communicated with my partner to let him know that I made improvements to the project. We communicated mostly during class but that’s all we really needed because we were already on the same page.
