My First Year

My grade 9 year

This year I overcame many challenges I faced in my first semester of high-school. My transition to high-school was much harder than I thought it would be. I felt overwhelmed and this caused me to feel unmotivated as I felt there was so much work to do. I ended up procrastinating and not doing the work. Eventually, with the help of my family and teachers, I realized I had to get the work done and it wasn’t just going to go away. I asked for help and extensions and plugged away at it slowly. I learned and implemented some strategies that helped me get my work done. As I started to do better in my classes, I learned what was expected and required of me. This, in turn, motivated me to do better and better.

By the end of my first semester, I reached my goal of getting “Proficient” in all my Semester 1 classes. I started some off them at “Emerging” and “Developing” and I made up my mind that I needed to get Proficient in the classes. I worked tirelessly to achieve “Proficients” and “Extendings” in the assignments I handed in order to bring my final mark up. I have been working in implementing this work ethic this second semester as well. I have learned my stretches are time management and avoidance. I sometimes take more time than I should or need to on certain assignments and this leaves me with little time to get every thing done. Also I manage time poorly by not starting on and working on assignments right away when they are assigned. When I fall behind, I resort to avoidance and it becomes even harder for me to complete assignments on time. Time management is a critical skill I need to work on, as with my busy lacrosse

schedule where I train seven days a week, I need to ensure I stay on top of my school work. This is something I would like to work on as I know in post secondary this important skill will define my ability to succeed.

A key difference in my learning and the learning of my peers is that I plan and hope to go to a Post-Secondary Institution in the United States that has a lacrosse program. This has affected my first year in high school as I feel I don’t have as much time to adjust to high school as many of my peers. The U.S. colleges look at grades from Grade 9 as well and so not only do I have to choose my post secondary program early, I also have to ensure my grades are good as soon as I started Grade 9. This was a challenge for me as I had no time to adjust to high school from middle school.

For this assignment as well, I should have asked for an extension on my Due Date before it was due. However, I didn’t ask for it until after it was due when I realized I needed more time than I had initially thought in order to do what I thought was a good job. I have learned a lot about communication with my teachers, and I hope to continue to build on myself as I have a lot of growing and learning to do. I would like my teachers to know that I am working hard and doing my best to improve, and thank them for their support and patience.

A Useful Educational Website

https://quizlet.com/

This website is useful for education because it helps students memorize terms and concepts. You input terms and definitions, and it creates digital flashcards and can generate practice tests. This is particularly helpful when studying for tests and exams. Quizlet is free to use but you can pay for extended features of this website.

I have used Quizlet for Socials and French last semester and Science, so far this semester. I have told many others about it as I find it so useful for me and my learning style and i hope it can help someone else as well.

A Useful Educational Video

This video is useful for education because it provides a tool for studying. The “blurting method” works when you read all your notes, put them away, and then write down everything you can remember on a separate piece of paper, not using your notes. You then take that blank piece of paper and fill in the gaps that you missed by using your notes you took. This helps to fill in the gaps in your memory as well, tying different pieces of your memory together and creating new learning pathways in your brain. The “blurting method” is a way to practice active recall, and this helps memorize notes. On this TikTok page, there are also other useful hacks and tips for studying and note taking.

A Useful Educational Image

In Business 9, we are learning about different types of businesses. I find this image useful for education overall and also specifically my own learning because this infographic gives a clear definition on the differences between the types of businesses and has an image for visual reference. Infographics like these are very useful for visual learners such as myself because it helps to match words to an image.

I have found this infographic to be informative, concise, and uses language that is easy to remember for me. I also find the images that go with it help me to remember and also the layout of how it goes from a sole-ownership to a co-op me to remember the different types of businesses and the structure of each.

An Inspirational Quote

“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” —Dr. Seuss

This quote was always read to me in elementary school and it has resonated with me. My elementary school principal Mr. Passaglia used to read it to us at the end of every school and I especially remember it when I graduated elementary school in grade 5. It reminds me of how far I have come slowly year after year and how I can keep learning and building on this year after year. The fact that I still feel it is relevant is a testament to how it has impacted me and my views on learning and how its is a lifelong process.

 ADL Social Studies- Ethical Judgement

Is violence justified during a protest?

How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project

Using AI in the project helped with generating ideas when I was stuck. It gave me additional topics and thoughts to think about and include when I was running out of ideas or stuck on one track. I also found AI was very helpful as it also acted as a second perspective on the question. Even though I had my thoughts and opinions on a topic, AI often presented another viewpoint or another point that made me think about the topic in further detail.

How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI

I ensured that the work that I created consisted of only general ideas from the AI. The AI gave me a more solid understanding of the question. This allowed me to formulate my own opinion and I then backed my opinion with facts that I learned on my own. I find that for an opinion piece, it was not difficult to ensure that my work was my own, as I had to explain why I felt a certain way about a topic.

Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

I somewhat disagree with my position. I had to argue that violence was justified in protests. I don’t agree agree with promoting violence, but sometimes you also have to find a way to to bring immediate attention to a topic that poses a threat to citizens. It becomes a challenge to agree or disagree with a hard-fast position on such a controversial topic as there are so many gray areas that emerge as discussions go on.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include research on various platforms, the use of AI, communication and collaboration with my group-mates. I find using multiple strategies helps me to get the most information. I can then sort through the information and pick and choose the relevant pieces. I also find different platforms have a different style of presenting the information, which gives me different perspectives on a topic.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I…

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, i find my communication style changes. I am more focused on the task at hand, and my conversations are more direct and relevant to the task that needs to be completed. I also find I revert to come forms of communication that the other person prefers, For example, I don’t often use Instagram as a communication platform to collaborate. I didn’t know my partner well, and she suggested using Instagram as a collaboration platform. I was open to this as I have Instagram, but I definitely noticed that my communication style was different.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The Movie Featuring: Bottom

Our Movie

Character, Setting and Mood

Determining our character, setting and mood for the movie really forced us to think outside of the box and analyze the play in depth. First, we had to identify the components of the play that hinted at what our character looked like or what the setting and mood was. Finding out the appearance of our avatar was the first thing we did as it felt like it was the easiest out of all. Bottom was talked about a lot throughout the play. Putting together his appearance from bits and pieces of other characters’ descriptions of him was a fun challenge. Next, we moved to the setting of our movie. By determining the setting of this story, I learned that you can’t pinpoint one setting to a whole story. There are different settings within the story and they can change drastically. The setting in our movie changes almost every slide so that it can properly fit the scene. This made for a lot of scene changes and movement of characters, but it was essential to make sense. Each setting came with its own mood depending on what was happening in the scene. We had to take that into account when making our movie and picking out images. For the background, we picked medieval music because it matched the play’s vibe and because the play was based so long ago. The tune evokes the mood of being back in that time. In literature and movies, the word mood means the feeling that is experienced by the characters and the reader. Finally, our movie has a lot of different shades of green incorporated into the slides. The greens used felt soft, so it had a warm, rustic vibe. The colors used were intentionally used in order to give the feeling that this play was old. The images were intentionally kept black and monotone, so they didn’t take away from the greens used. It was purposely kept “un-colorful” to keep the overall feeling to be old and consistent through the play. One of the most interesting things about this project was that I got a new perspective on the play from only Bottom’s point of view. Initially, we were looking at the play with an overall lens. From a digital literacy perspective, I learned how to add some extras into the project to improve its visual appearance and make a better product. Focusing in on Bottom’s perspective was an interesting change that I would have never considered if it wasn’t for the project. Overall, this was a fun project even though it came with challenges.

Core Competency Reflection

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is…

When me and Caden were making this movie, we often built upon each others ideas when talking about the paragraph and sentence structure within the slides. This really works because putting our ideas together made our finished product better then if we would have done it alone or individually. With Caden’s help I was able to better explain my thoughts because he added onto them so that they made more sense on our PowerPoint.

I appreciate feedback on… and prefer it comes in the form of…

I appreciate feedback on how I could improve for the next time a project like this comes around. I know for myself, I need to improve on handing it in on time. I appreciate the feedback that has been provided via teams. I have taken that feedback and worked to improve my project. I don’t have a preference on what form I receive feedback in.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

These examples cannot be seen though work but my work mirrors it. If me and my groupmate had not communicated then we would have done the same slides, missed parts of the project etc. We communicated who was doing what and that helped set us up for success. I communicated with my partner to let him know that I made improvements to the project. We communicated mostly during class but that’s all we really needed because we were already on the same page.
