Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment

For my textiles class project, I sewed a custom laptop case. I selected a fabric I liked, a fluffy layer, and a lining to make sure it looked clean. Throughout the project, I applied sewing techniques I had learned, including straight stitching, quilting, and inserting a zipper + using a zipper foot. This project not only improved my sewing skills but also allowed me to creatively express my personal style while producing something practical for everyday use. when I picked this project, I found a YouTube video online that helped me start the project but didn’t help in the slightest towards the middle, she was pointing to places I couldn’t see and was covering the entire thing with her hands it was a mess until I used paper instructions. those helped a whole lot and helped me but not to the extent where it was taking away the fun of figuring things out. something I had some difficulty with was the lining and how to properly place it but with help from the teacher I finally got it and did it the same way for the second time when I repeated the project. During my textiles project, I effectively used the communication and thinking core competencies. I communicated my design ideas clearly through sketches and discussions with the teacher, making sure my vision was understood.

Final Reflection

Throughout my time in this class, the one project we did that I am most proud of was the “movie” we made of our book. In the process of creating my PowerPoint “movie” based off the book “Caraval,” I actively engaged the thinking core competency. I analyzed the key themes, characters, and plot details of the book, making decisions on what elements to include along the way. Additionally, I employed creative thinking by exploring unique ways to present information, ensuring that my slides were not only information packed, but also visually engaging. This required me to make strategic choices about what iw as going to choose to add, highlighting the most important scenes of “Caraval.” Through this project, the thinking core competency helped me along the way, allowing me to show a deep understanding of the book while presenting it in a compelling and imaginative way.
