My First Year

My first year in high school has been very thrilling. Some words that could describe my year are exciting and awkward. My year was exciting as I got to make many new friends and learning new things. My year was also very stressful. From being around a 79% in math to getting it all the way up to an 86%. The year was also very awkward. Since I was not used to such a big campus (I went to Maillard), navigating around the school and bumping into people was very weird.

The reason I chose this website is because I have used this website in both semesters for my Sci9 and Sci10 classes. We did most of our interactive learning on this website for our physics unit. This website has many useful resources and demonstrations for how energy is transferred or even ant physics topic you could think of. This website has helped me a lot and still helps me to this day for any questions I might have for physics.

Everyday leadership | Drew Dudley | TEDx Toronto 2010

The reason I chose this video is because I first saw this video in Leadership 10 and this video demonstrates how little acts of people can change another person’s life. The speaker in the video calls it a “Lollipop Moment”. He calls it a lollipop moment because just like giving a lollipop to a child can change their day and make them happy, a lollipop moment can change someone’s life. Since i have watched this video, it has motivated me even more to do things that could change other people’s lives.

The reason I chose this image is because I took this image in math when I was unable to solve these types of problems. It took me around a week to understand how to solve it. I also remember looking at this problem the night before my math finals and then two questions of this type came on my final. I am very grateful to this image or i might have gotten a low mark on my final.

The reason I chose this quote is because it tells us how we can achieve something good if even if something bad happens to us. It also tells us that we should not give up hope and feel demotivated.

Contract Law Storyboard Reflection

Core Competency:  What are 3 core competencies you demonstrated with the Storyboard Assignment?  Explain.

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others. When you gave us the example image of the storyboard created by another student, I built upon that image and modified it so it fit my story. I took the template of that storyboard and then changed all the images and text so it fit with my story

I give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals. I asked my peers for feedback about my storyboard and they found some mistakes. They showed me the right things and I also understood them and then I implemented them into my project

I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas. Like I said above, there were some mistakes in my storyboard which caused me to be set back. I developed those ideas so they were right and took more feedback from my peers.

Capitol Mutation Collaborative Project

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by my working habits with my peers. Group work is when everyone has their own part that they are doing and then we combine all those ideas and submit. Collaboration is when we all work together as a group and build upon each other’s ideas.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see people discussing their ideas and improving each other’s ideas to help boost our progress even more. This helps all our group members stay on the same page and not wonder what is happening.

If the group is not productive, we can ask the the teacher to help us and encourage us to get things moving in the right direction. This will make our group more productive.

If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to find a common ground and/or try to merge everyone’s ideas so everyone has a part and they are happy with the product as all of them have an equal part in the project/work.

One of my goals is to be more productive, be more open to ideas and be more smart in my studies. One of my I can statements could be “I can stay on task” and “I can collaborate with my peers” and “I can learn independently”

P.s. I can already do the above ‘I can’ statements and i didn’t know what you meant when you said identify the I can statements so i just wrote what i thought as I didn’t find any I can statements in the assignment.

Advertisement Persuasion Project

My Advertisement

Persuasion and Advertisement Techniques

· Why is it important to remember who benefits from the advertisement when you view an advertisement?

The person benefiting from the advertisement might not be a good person and may use the profits towards a bad cause. The advertiser might also not be actually promising the features of the product and is just using fake points.

· Choose one form of persuasion and explain why it is effective in persuading you/an audience: logical, ethical, emotional

Ethical because it uses the reference of a trusted adult and we know to trust them because they are well known in their profession such as doctors, nurses, technicians, etc.

· Choose an advertising technique and explain why it is effective in selling a product.

An advertisement technique that is effective is emotional as it convinces us to buy that product and plays with our emotions by using words and phrases such as “buying this would feed a child” or something like that. This makes think less before buying that product.

One strategy or activity that stimulated my imagination on this project was using other forms of advertisements that are already published to be my reference points. Other advertisements are created by professionals and are usually very convincing. I used some features of those ads and merged them into mine to give my ad a professional look.

I used to think that advertisements were just videos created by very normal people and the people in the ads used to say the truth. After learning all the techniques and strategies ad makers use, I realized that everything shown is not true.

I selected words for persuading my target audience by selecting words that made the viewer feel more confident. My hearing toque ad had several phrases like not letting someone die, recommended by every winning tribute, etc. This would give the viewer a sense of trust on our product and would want to buy it.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

One key leadership quality I possess is a robust work ethic. An illustrative example occurred during a time-sensitive project at my previous school. Recognizing the project’s significance, I consistently led by example, putting in extra hours to ensure its success. I organized tasks efficiently, providing clear guidance to the team. My commitment to detail and regular check-ins with team members created a culture of dedication. This approach not only contributed to meeting the tight deadline but also instilled a sense of motivation and accountability within the team. This experience reinforced my belief that a strong work ethic is pivotal not just for personal success but for fostering a collaborative and high-performing team.

One of my key leadership skills is effective communication, exemplified during a period of organizational change at my previous school. Recognizing the need for clarity and transparency, I conducted regular team meetings to discuss changes openly, address concerns, and highlight positive aspects. Emphasizing an open-door policy, I encouraged team members to voice their questions and uncertainties. This approach fostered a supportive environment, easing anxieties and promoting unity. The result was a smoother transition, with the team adapting seamlessly to changes while maintaining high levels of productivity. This experience underscored the critical role of communication in guiding teams through transitions and maintaining cohesion.

A leadership quality I aspire to develop by the end of this course is organizational skills. While I already possess a foundational understanding, I aim to refine my ability to manage tasks, prioritize effectively, and streamline workflows. Through advanced project management techniques and the adoption of technology tools, I plan to enhance my organizational strategies. I recognize that improved organizational skills will not only contribute to my personal success but also positively impact team productivity. By the course’s conclusion, I aim to be a more structured and effective leader, better equipped to handle responsibilities, meet deadlines, and coordinate team efforts.

A leadership skill I’m committed to developing by the end of this course is time management. Recognizing its pivotal role in leadership effectiveness, I aim to enhance my ability to prioritize tasks, set realistic deadlines, and utilize efficient workflow strategies. Through the implementation of advanced time management techniques and productivity tools, I aspire to boost my personal efficiency and set a positive example for my team. I understand that effective time management is fundamental to achieving goals and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. By the course’s conclusion, I aim to be a more adept and organized leader, capable of navigating tasks with precision and timeliness.

I’m on a mission to amp up my time management skills, not just for me but to be a real positive force for my team. I figure if I can be more on top of things, it’s not just a win for me – it’s a win for everyone around me. We’re all in this journey together, working towards some pretty cool goals. Saying I want to boost my organizational skills isn’t just about me being a better leader; it’s about all of us being more efficient as a team. It’s like we’re all connected, each playing a role in reaching our shared goals. This is me, committing to bringing my A-game to the team and embracing the spirit of collaboration and teamwork.

Learning the Scientific Method: Self Assessment – Shayaan

In this picture, we launched our ball and it landed in the cup. Our measurement in this picture was 305 cm.

Curricular Response

When we built our Ball Launcher, we explored the scientific method. We learnt how to use the scientific method in daily life where we identified problems, tried to create a solution and tried to use that solution to solve that problem. In our ball launcher challenge, we used inductive learning to find out what angle we needed to use first to get our first testing result (we used our previous knowledge of gravity and aerodynamics to get our angle knowing that if we aim it at a very high angle, the ball will stall mid-air and fall to the ground losing all of it’s velocity. If we aim the ball very low, the ball will get a negative vertical velocity and still go down. We used deductive learning to get a better angle after our first test to get a better aim and angle.

Core Competency Self Assessment and Creative Thinking

· It’s important to celebrate our accomplishments. Which SCIENTIFIC METHOD LAB are you the most proud of and why?
I am most proud of my ball launcher lab as it was our most successful lab yet. We explored parts of physics and building while making the launcher. Our team achieved a length of 305 cm and we ranked 4th in the class for the longest launch distance

· What strategies did you use to overcome those challenges? Describe in detail.
We faced many challenges in our lab such as our rubber band breaking or our cup splitting. Our group was resourceful so we fixed our device with the available resources. Our initial launch distance was near 300 cm but after fixing our device with the available resources, we increased our launch distance by 5 cm.

· Describe your experience with understanding of the Scientific Method doing the lab?

We explored how to make a hypothesis and how to test our hypothesis. We needed to make a control experiment to test if our hypothesis worked according to what we thought. We tested our design and it failed the first test. We used deductive learning to fix that and made our device better.

· Tell me how you did the following:

A) I demonstrated that I can create new things when I work in a group. My weakness sometimes is working alone. When I collaborate with the people in my team, I share my knowledge and also learn from other people’s ideas and build on it.

B) I demonstrated that I can build on the ideas of others when our group was making our sample draft. We all had different ideas but one point was the same in each of our ideas. The point was the launcher mechanism with a cup and rubber bands. We all contributed what we thought would be the best and combined them to get one amazing design

C) When trying new things, I expect setbacks and failure and use them to develop my ideas. An example of this from the Scientific Method labs would be when our ball launcher started to fall apart by splitting down the middle. We fixed it by making the pencils not move any further which was making the cup split. We finally fixed it and made our launcher work again.
