Core Competency Self Assessment

Collaboration

For this assignment I collaborated with two other people. Our task was to research one of the types of plate boundaries and share our findings with the group. We each communicated verbally and chose which boundary we would research. It wasn’t difficult to divide up the work evenly as there are three types of boundaries, and three of us. It also didn’t matter to any of us which boundary we researched. There was no disagreement between us three. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to fully complete our task and communicate our findings to the rest of the group. We instead researched the boundaries on our own and filled out the table on our own. Other ways I collaborate in class is sharing my thoughts and answers to certain questions in class discussions. I also take in other peoples thoughts and I include them in my notes or answers as they often have valid responses or another point which I didn’t think of. If I disagree with another’s thoughts, I recognize that we just have differing views on the topic.

One thing I need to work on is collaborating more on assignments, and communicating more with my peers. In this class particularly. This includes asking for help when I need it, which I often struggle with. The above example was the only one I had of collaboration, and we really didn’t collaborate that much. When I do collaborate with peers in other classes, I always do my part and if necessary, I step up and lead the group. I’d like to have an opportunity to do that in this class if it arises. I can work on my collaboration by putting myself out there more, getting over any nerves I have and just going for it. I have done so before. I just have to recognize that I am capable of, and sometimes enjoy collaborating in class.

My Digital Footprint

After googling my name, I was happy to see that none of my information or pictures were online. I found many people with similar names who had shared their information publicly. There is an actor, pickleball player and murder victim all with the same name as mine. With a simple search, my social media accounts cannot be found. As well, videos or pictures of my hobbies such as dance are not available to the public.

To others, I believe my digital footprint would come off as surprising. Many teenagers post pictures and information publicly online that can be found easily by others. I think it is important to have a clean digital footprint so future employers cannot find information or videos that may be inappropriate or embarrassing. My digital footprint shows the “5 c” that is control of identity. My identity is private and not shown online and nobody is posting images or videos that are inappropriate under my name.

My existing digital footprint will not affect my future opportunities. If schools or future jobs cannot find any information online they will learn all about me from interviews. I can make a good impression as they will be learning information from me and not online. My footprint will not affect my family and friends as they are not associated with a person that has an unflattering background on the internet.

Speech Unit Reflection

I had many trials and tribulations whilst researching for my speech. I feel I learned a lot of useful information which I put into my speech. One of the facts that I feel I could use in the future is that people who are optimistic tend to have better mental and physical health. I believe it is important to practice as we are often surrounded by stress and pessimism. To create my citations, I used Citation Machine. I have experience using the program so I found it easy to use. I found many of my sources through Gale Topic Finder. It was a good way to find multiple articles relating to my topic but was sometimes difficult. Once I knew the official term used to describe my topic, Positive Psychology, I was able to access a website that was created by the first person that studied it. The next time I research, I will try to use different phrases when searching to find useful articles quickly. I may also try to find another topic finder. Overall, I feel I did well while researching but I can always improve.

Innovation Timeline

Reflection:

a. I know the information I gathered is reliable because I found that the websites update their information often. This shows that they check the information to see if it is up to date.

b. There are multiple reasons why I chose Canva as my medium. I have used it before and have experience and I find it easy to use and customize.

c. I am satisfied with the result of my design and I feel it portrays my information well.

d. If i were to change my design in the future I would make the text larger to make it easier to read.

My Self Portrait

Reflection

My self profile project is innovative because it allows you to tell others about you in a visual and written way. When thinking of ideas for this project I thought about my favourite things as well as hobbies and traits I have. In my visual representation I enjoyed showing things about me that I didn’t talk about in my paragraph. If I were to do a project like this again I think I would choose a different metaphor that was a little easier to connect with me. Over all I felt like my creativity was shown in my image rather than my paragraph but, if I had a better idea that I was passionate about I think my paragraph could be way better.
