Part 1:
I chose to DIY jam. Regular jam bought from the store costs around $4 for 18oz.
Cost for the DIY jam:
$3.14 for 4 lbs of sugar but we only need .75 lbs of sugar so the cost of sugar would be $0.59.
$3.22 for 1lb of strawberries.
$0.58 for one lemon
$13.44 for 12 jars. Each jar is $1.12, and the recipe I’m following makes two jars of strawberry jam, so the initial cost of jars is going to be 2.24, which is our constant because you can reuse jars.
The total cost of all ingredients, without taking into account pots, pans, cutlery, and thermometers, is 4.39+2.24 (All costs found on Walmart.)

Rational Function:

Part 2A:
Comparison: Homemade jam costs $6.63, which is $2.63 more than store-bought. The homemade jam makes 2 cups, which is equivalent to 16 oz, whereas store-bought jam is 18 oz.
Does your “diy” ever become cheaper? If so, when?
If x=the number of jars I make. If I made six jars, the equation would be

which would mean my initial cost of two jars would be $5.51. Each time you make a jar of jam, the cost reduces. If I made three jars, the cost would be $5.14.
What are the pros and cons of “diy”?
DIY projects have pros and cons. One pro is that you save money on professional labour because you’re making them at home. You may also save money by buying the materials. For most people, DIY projects are a creative outlet, fun, and offer a sense of accomplishment. DIY projects also let you personalize them by making them yourself. However, projects may take a lot of time and may not go as planned. You might make a mistake, causing stress and feeling overwhelmed.
What impacts your decisions when making purchases?
When making purchases, I consider the price and quality. Convenience is a factor, whether I have the time to make it at home or buy it off a shelf. Sustainability also matters to me, sometimes its better to make it yourself because you know every ingredient that’s involved, whereas buying from stores involve ingredients you cant even pronounce.

Part 2B:
How frequently do you consider the monetary value of your time?
Rarely do I ever consider my time as money. When I’m doing something I enjoy, I focus on the enjoyment and satisfaction of finishing a project rather than how much my time is worth.
What happens to your “diy” price if you include your cost of labour?
Making jam folling the attatched recipe takes under 20 minutes. The minimum wage in BC is $17.50. Considdering cost of labour, my price would be 6.63+5.83= 12.46.

Is there a point where we should prioritize worker conditions over convenience and low prices?
There definitely comes a point where worker conditions should be prioritized over convenience and low prices. While low prices and convenience are important to consumers, they shouldn’t come at the expense of workers’ health or safety. Choosing not to buy from non-ethical businesses means you’re not supporting the exploitation of workers and are instead promoting fair treatment and sustainability for workers.
