This photo shows that even though it is through a screen its still possible for anything to happen. One of the well known ways of kidnapping a child is through bribing them with candy. This photo shows that you can still get kidnapped, trafficked and more through a screen. Not literally people can stick their hands out of your phone, laptop, but there are many ways for it to happen. The internet is not a safe place especially for younger people who aren’t as educated. There are something called catfishing as little as someone looking different online and in real life to people who pretend they are a completely different people. These can lead to meeting up in real life where terrible things can happen. Some regular people and catfishes bribe and make people do things online. Pressure can be harsh on lots and some smart people on the internet can make someone crack and do things that shouldn’t be done. There’s also a bunch of hackers and important things like security numbers, passwords, addresses, card numbers and more can be leaked. The internet is a scary, secretive place where so much can happen. I’m not saying to stay off of social media and the internet because there’s a lot of ways to be safe with it. You can make sure your passwords are safely secure and make sure you choose a strong hard password that is hard to crack. Be careful with what you download. There’s a lot of sketchy websites and apps that can be dangerous for you and your phone so make sure you read through it before getting it. Be careful what you post by not posting your face where strangers can see it and try having a private account. Be careful who you talk to. Avoid weird conversations with strangers that are unnecessary. They’re not always who you think they might be and a lot can be catfishes. Those are only a few ways to stay safe on social media/the internet and there are many more. I suggest talking to someone with more experience about internet safety before downloading apps, websites, socials and more.
Personal/Social Core Competency Self-Assessment
By doing internet safety online and raising awareness about it, I make a positive difference to my peers.
My online support network is helpful to me because they show me information that I didn’t know about. They help me because they know more than I do and can show me more about safety.
Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced online presence include having a safe password, not talking to people I don’t know (strangers), and not having personal information out for others to see.
