My First Year

My grade 9 year

My first day in high school was very intimidating. I felt like I would never get used to the high school environment. Although, as time went on I challenged myself to go outside of my comfort zone. I joined many clubs and sports teams and took on some volunteer opportunities as well. I did this all because I wanted to leave a positive impact in my school. I am happy I was able to uplift and support many communities. For example, I helped put on a Black History Month assembly to shine light on the many Black achievements that occurred in history. This year was filled with growth as I learned to balance both academic and my personal interests without falling behind in class. All this to say my grade 9 year was filled with exciting opportunities and meaningful moments that I can smile back at.

A Useful Educational Website

I chose Quizlet as my useful educational website because its helped me study throughout the school year. Quizlet creates virtual flashcards and makes practices test for you. I found Quizlet very helpful for me, especially in science when I had to memorize things in a unit. For example, during the chemistry unit I made flashcards on Quizlet to memorize the elements on the periodic table.

A Useful Educational Video

I chose this video because it was a project I made for English. This project was a book response I presented to my class. I enjoyed working on this assignment because it was unique assignment that I have never done before. This was one of my first presentation on high school so it was a memorable experience. My favourite parts were choosing the background music and creating how each character looked based on how Imagined them looking when I read my book.

This school year I joined the track team. Being on the track team was amazing an experience. I met many amazing people and we made tons of memories together. I am happy I joined the track team as I was able to get active and improve in my running. I want to joined track next year to improve my running even further.

An Inspirational Quote

Throughout this school year there were times when I wanted to quit trying, whether in academics or in sports because sometimes it got really hard. However, my relationship with God is what has been helping me persevere. When there’s ever a time I feel stressed or burdened, I know God will deliver me from it. As it says in the verse above “I will give you rest.” This year has been filled with blessings, God has helped me through this whole school year to understand concepts in different subjects. For example, there were many times in math when I just could not understand what were doing but anytime I read tis verse I felt encourage to keep on going. This verse in the Bible is the quote I choose because it shows that whenever there’s a moment I feel weak I can remember the Lord is strong and He will help me through it all. This verse is written by Matthew one of Jesus’s disciples.

Is violence justified during a protest?

A) How did the use of Ai assist you in developing this project?

By using Ai I was able to find a variety of information surrounding my topic and related sources to back up my claims. It also help as it told me what I needed to know in a consisted, short and easy to understand paragraph.

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own rather than just a product of Ai?

After using Ai and to research information I would develop my own understanding of the topic by finding the key takeaways and asking myself questions like “How can I write this in my own words with the knowledge I now know?” I would create my paragraphs in my own words using the knowledge I inquired.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

Personally I did not agree with arguing for violence being justified during revolutions or protest because I believe violence does a lot of harm.

Core competencies

I compile and synthesize information to draw reasoned conclusions, such as when I was researching information from a variety of source and forming my own paragraphs with the key points I found.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is by supporting them throughout the project. I acknowledge that every has their own understanding of things so I make sure that all our ideas align.

My Movie

Plot, Character, Setting and Mood

To determine my avatar’s appearance I used my own imagination alongside the information I was given from the book. For example, my book mentioned how the protagonist had long brown hair. So while creating my avatar I chose for her hair to match the description of the story. Although, other accepts of her appearance clothing, eye shape and background of my avatar was how I imagined it being while reading the book.

Throughout my reading, I used sticky notes to mark out pages that seemed important to the plot. Later on with full knowledge of the plot I categorized the sticky notes into initiating incident, rising action, climax etc. This process helped in choosing my plot points as It made it easier to find a passage to support my reasoning.

To figure out the setting of my story I read in between the lines of shatter me. The protagonist talks about the corruption of the government in her dying so society. So, I inferred this story was set in an ‘corrupt futuristic dystopian world’. The setting helps tell the message of the story. If the story were set in a utopian world, the message wouldn’t be the same as the protagonist were based on her environment.

The definition of mood in my own words is…an expression of a feeling or emotion through an experience. I felt the mood of this book was uplifting as the protagonist has to rise up from oppression. The song I picked to go with my powerpoint is a representation of this mood I felt while reading the story.

Core Competency Refection

I have valuable ideas to share about oppression against certain groups in society…and do so by expressing my ideas through assignments and group discussions. Its important to share our ideas as everybody’s ideas are important in order to change.

I am willing to explore controversial issues such as…corruption and oppression in order to imagine and work toward change in myself or the world, including…equality for everybody in society no matter their indifferences. I am willing to do this to create a better future for the following generations.

I appreciate feedback in areas of needed growth so I can improve my skills to get better and prefer it comes in the form of constructive criticism through an adult or my peers.
