Reflecting on My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

When I am having difficulty with something, I usually take my mind of whatever I am struggling with and think about something else. Doing this helps me get back on track and re focus so that when I get back to what I was having difficulty with, I am focused and ready. This year I enjoyed electronics because I got to learn how to use new machines and make cool stuff which I have not done before such as vinyl stickers, Arduino, different types of paracord weaves and more. Some words that describe my year are interesting, fun, and exciting. I chose interesting because coming to this school I had no idea of how big it would be and was very interested to explore around. Fun would also be a word to describe my year because one of the subjects that I really enjoyed was P.E, I got to play so many sports, and got to meet some new people. I chose exciting because when I first came to Centennial I was very excited to start high school and see what the year has in store for me.

My Favorite Website

https://www.khanacademy.org/

I chose this website because whenever I have any questions or am struggling in a specific concept when I am at home I watch a video from khan academy. This helps me clear out any doubts that I have and allows me to succeed and do much better. Not only does khan academy have videos but they also have practice questions for you to do to really test how much you understand, which is also really helpful for me because if I have any math tests or any quizzes practicing on khan academy helps me prepare.

Favorite Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz1i5ncOVIs

I chose this video because it really helped me have a better understanding of the american revolution and what caused it. Another reason why I chose this video is because it is explained really well and in a way that anyone can understand it. Meaning you would have a really good grasp and when it comes to a test you would easily know what the wright answer would be.

My Favorite Image

I chose this image because I got to learn how to make vinyl stickers with the vinyl cutting machine. I found this really interesting and cool because it is something that I have never seen before. This was also one of my favorite units we did because we got to choose a few different pictures that we would like to cut out and when it was done you can stick them in your room, which is pretty cool.

My Favorite Quote

“Mathematics consists of proving the most obvious thing in the least obvious way.” – George Polya

I chose to share this quote because it motivates me to try solving a math problem in a number of different ways and compare it to the most obvious solution. By doing that it helps me to critically think more and opens up my mind to new ways that you can approach a math problem. I also find this pretty interesting because whenever you are trying to solve a problem in the least obvious way it would definitely take time and you would have to keep trying ways to solve it until you get to the right answer.

$80,000 * 1.042= $83,360- Year 1

$83,360 * 1.042= $86,861.12- Year 2

$86, 861. 12 * 1.042= $90,509. 287- Year 3

$10,000 + $10,000 + $10,000= $30,000

Justifications

Earlier in the unit I have found out that my risk tolerance is mostly moderate. This means that I probably will not be taking much risks of losing all the money that I have gained over three years, not only that but if I do decide to risk my money then it would most likely be calculated. I think the 1 year 3.5% annual non redeemable GIC is good because all the prices at the end of each year are clearly shown, which means if I were to take any risks then for the most part they should not go wrong because all the steps are clear and calculated.

Collaboration and Contributions

1) How did you find working with your group? I found working with my group pretty good because everyone was trying to contribute whenever possible and we were all working together for the calculations and finding a solution part.

2)How did you contribute to the group? And how did others in the group contribute to your learning? Overall I felt that my contribution to the group was pretty good because I was helping out with the calculations and part of the final solution. Others in my group contributed to my learning by also explaining their ideas/ points which gave me another way of how to think about the problem.

3)Did you use any other the solutions proposed by your group? Why or why not? In my group we tried multiple different ideas and kind of experimented by combining our ideas or even trying what everyone thinks and see how it goes. At the end I think we used a little bit of everyone’s idea to come up with our current final solution.

4) How would you rate your ability to collaborate with others in your group on a scale of 1-4? On a scale of 1-4 I would probably rate my ability to collaborate with others in my group a 3 because I contributed to the solutions and calculations that we did.

Core Competency Reflection

1) I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see… them working together to find solutions and taking each others ideas in to account. I also know when the group is working well together when I see everyone doing there part to find an end result and when everyone is talking about how we might be able to make improvements to the solution.

2) I can reflect on my thinking. I reflect on my own thinking by sometimes taking a couple steps back and look over if what I am doing makes sense. Doing this can help you get back on track sometimes especially when you get confused or mixed up on a step.

3) I show others that I truly value their contributions by… listening to their ideas and what they have to say, then try to also include there ideas/ thoughts into the process.

4) I can find it easy to be part of a group. In my opinion it is easy to be apart of a group because since there are more people there will be more ideas to work with. Another reason why I find it easy to be part of a group is because everyone would have a different perspective of looking at the problem, which gives more ways to think about it.

My Digital Footprint: Keeping Myself Safe

Creating a Positive and Safe Digital Footprint

Internet safety is important because if you are not aware of what’s going on or what you are posting something could happen. Which is why you always stay alert because you might leave a digital footprint by doing that. Some examples of unsafe activities are not thinking about what you post twice, leaving information online such as house address, and phone number. Some steps you should take to stay safe online are make passwords with special characters, always staying alert, and try to boost your house’s network security. Also it is very important to stay safe online because anyone could be looking at it around the world from whichever platform it is. Which is why you should be careful with what you post every day. One day you might think that I shouldn’t have posted this but then it would already be too late because it is permanent, which means it’s always on there. Some commonly used platforms these days are Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, and more. Also out of all those people seeing it some people could be scammers or hackers. Which could mean you are giving them all the info they need to hack you or find you.

Core Competencies

I make digital ethical choices such as thinking about if I should post something twice and if it is correct or not in order to ensure that I don’t leave too much of a digital footprint or that I will regret the choice.

I think my experiences as a digital citizen such as all the apps I have used in my life or anything I have posted influenced my choice of thinking twice before posting and making sure if I really want to do this.

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain online relationships are by first finding out if it is a person I know or am friends with then I would start chatting back.
