Social Studies 10 Edublog

Curricular Competency Reflection

I did assess, understood, and explained the significance of the threat of the Japanese army and its treatment of people it conquered, in British Columbia, in my research handout and paragraph.

Core Competency Reflection

I did analyze evidence from the research I did and made judgements.

Metalwork 10 Edublog

As part of Mr. Peterson’s Metal 10 class, we completed the “shovel” project. The first step was to measure a cylinder piece of metal to your preferred length and then use the lathe to trim off a little metal at a time to get my metal to my preferred width. We then used the band saw to cut our metal to the length we want it to be. I messed up my first piece when I trimmed off to much metal on the lathe. But with more knowledge of the equipment the second time around, I re-did my piece in less then a day. If I were t change one thing, I would make my welds better as I was not used to welding on an angle on a curved piece of metal. I bent my shovel head, so welding on the bend was new to me. Here is an example of what the shovel looks like.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

“Reliable Defibrillators (AED) Collection.” Elite Medic, https://elitemedic.ca/collections/defibrillators-aed. Accessed 1 May 2025.

CPR Reflection

Something that I learned is that an AED can increase the preservation of life by a lot. Chest compressions alone can save somebody, but an AED is extremely helpful.

One key takeaway from the theory or practical unit is that there are multiple causes for a heart to stop. I did not know before that a heart attack and stroke were two different things.

This unit connects to nutrition because, one of the main causes of heart failure is unhealthy dieting. And one of the best ways to prevent heart failure is to exercise.

Core Competency Reflection

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on what we are supposed to do is to take control of the situation, be supportive, and make sure that everybody has something to do and that they are able to do it to their full potential.

One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was when I learned that even the healthiest people can still get a fatal heart attack. So, it is very important to do everything you can to prevent a heart attack before it happens.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take a quick break to listen to music or watch a show. And then I reassure myself that “I can do this; I can get this done” and then I get back to work. With this simple tactic, I consistently get my work done to my full ability.

Study Smarter

Tip 1: Make time to study

This does not mean study whenever you have the chance, this means that, if possible, clear your schedule so that you can study without thinking about what other activities you may have that day. This could be difficult if you have multiple extracurricular activities, but still possible if you make a schedule that includes study time in it.

Tip 2: Manage your time

Even though some people find success in studying for 3-4 hours in one sitting, you can also be successful in taking 30 second to 1-minute breaks within a certain time span. This way you can study for a long time, but I will not feel as long as it is.

Tip 3: Eliminate distractions

When studying, it is important to put all electronic devices away if possible, so you do not feel the urge to go on your phone or to play games on your computer. You can also get rid of clocks, so you do not constantly look at the time waiting for the time to be over.

Tip 4: Study consistently

Do not study a day before a test or exam, study multiple times a week to make sure that you can remember everything you need to know to be ready for the test or exam coming up. Studying every day is not needed. You can study 4-5 days a week and still be successful.

Tip 5: Teach your peers

If your studying is paying off, you should be able to teach your peers in the subject. This does not mean that you need to present a lecture to your classmates, this could simply be explaining something to one of your friends to help them better understand the material.

How will I study affectively

To study affectively, I will try to find time to study even if this includes watching less TV or spending less time on my phone. I will try to study for at least 3 days a week for 3 hours a day with five 1-minute breaks in that time span. I will let my parents and siblings know that I will be occupied for a few hours. Finally, I will put all of my devices away and isolate myself from any other distractions and will begin working. If I fallow all of these steps, I should be ready for any of my tests or exams, and I should be successful in all of my academic classes.

English 10 Highlight

My highlight for English 10 was my novel study assignment. My book was “One of Us Is Next” by Karen M. McManus. I did five assignments in this unit. I made a poem related to the story, a quiz on the story, a review on the book, a description of one of the characters, and a presentation on three reasons why I would recommend this book. One of things I learned during this assignment was how to get your point across in a formal matter without using “I” statements. That was also the most valuable thing I have learned in the class because, I will use this throughout the rest of my life whenever I write something formal.

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen when I did my comics on a story we were learning in our class. I felt like I described the situation in detail and I was able to make illustrations that fit the description well.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include getting relevant information from a trusted source and checking to make sure that the information I got is correct by seeing if I get similar information from other trusted websites.

As an active listener, I notice that other students have the same questions as me but I am often to afraid to ask in front of the class. To continue to be successful in French 11 I will make sure to ask questions in front of the class so that others will also get a better understanding.

How is Hereditary Information Passed From One Generation to the Next?

Curricular Competency Reflection

The two traits with more than two genes are eye and skin colour. The number of active genes determines the phenotype because, for something like colour, there are more than two options. There are a lot of different possible colours, so the combination of different alleles decides every last shade of the eye or skin.

I did not want my baby to have blue eyes because nobody in my family has ever had blue eyes. I also think that the darker shade of skin my baby has does not compliment his blue eyes well.

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I often take a break and do something that I enjoy like watch television or listen to music. To make sure that I do not get distracted by these things, I set a timer to notify me when I need to get back to work. When I do take a break, it is around 10-30 minutes.

To celebrate an accomplishment such as a good grade, I look through my work and the teacher’s comments to see what I did correctly. I then apply the things I did well to my other projects and assignments. Depending on the course, I might need to tweak things to make my applications better fit the class and the certain project.

Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include taking breaks when I feel overworked or stressed out by work. I often cope with stress while working by listening to music and taking breaks. At home, I work for 20 minutes and then take a break for around the same time to maintain a work-life balance.

Core Competency Goal Setting

Some goals I have met in the past that I am proud of are not being as hard on myself when I get a bad mark and trying my best to figure out why I got a bad mark. I will use these these so that I can find why I am not successful and figure out how to fix the problem so that I can succeed.

This year, I will respectfully advocate for my needs by asking for help when I need it and use flex block as much as possible.

This is a picture of my egg drop project in science 9. It was not a successful project but this helped me understand how much cushioning and wind resistance actually matter. So by failing, I ended up learning more then I would of if I succeeded.

ADL Social Studies – Ethical Judgement

Reflection Questions – Is Violence Justified During a Revolution/Protest?

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project:

AI assisted me with finding information about revolutions and protests from trusted sources. Also, the information that the AI gave me was exactly what I was looking for. I did not need to look through and find something that could help, it was all given to me.

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of AI:

I put the information that the AI gave me in my own words and added some ideas that I already knew. I also made sure that the information that I used was from a website that I could trust.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

I did agree with the position that I argued because I watched the George Floyd riots on the news and I felt that I lost all of my sympathy for George Floyd. But looking back, it was not Floyds fault that the protesters became violent even though they were protesting in honor of Floyd.

Core Competency Reflection

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

Using my prior knowledge of information about the topic I have already learned, using AI like Perplexity or chat GPT, searching for answers to specific questions on a search engine and making sure that the information I am getting is backed up by other websites and is from a reliable source.

I compile and synthesize information to draw reasoned conclusions, such as when…

I looked at both sides of this project and chose one to do, then when I was done, I looked back to see if my rebuttal is really showing that the cons of violence in protests and revolutions actually out way the pros. And after looking back, I believe that my conclusion is reasonable.
