Socials Studies 10

Curricular Competency-Japanese-Canadian Internment & Paragraph

During the learning and writing of the Japanese-Canadian internment and paragraph, I accomplished the following competencies:

Science 10

Science 10 – Core Competency Reflection Writing

Critical and reflective thinking

I examine my thinking, seek feedback, reassess my work, and adjust. I have shown this throughout this class by making sure that I actively ask for feedback from my friends or teacher, so that I can adjust my work based on many people’s perspectives, which allowed me to grow. An example of this would be my artifact since I had to draw the traits and I asked for feedback from my partner, making sure that I was adding all the traits to the babies face. This shows my critical and reflective thinking.

I consider alternative approaches and make strategic choices.  When I was faced with a challenge or decision, I made sure to consider alternative strategies before I settled on one choice. An example of this would be when I am studying for a test or quiz, since I consider the different ways of studying, such as using flash cards, telling someone about the topic, or reading through my notes, before I jump into studying just to find out that the certain method does not work.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

I can ask questions and offer judgments, conclusions, and interpretations supported by evidence I or others have gathered. When I am confused or stuck on a problem, I actively ask questions to my friends or teacher, making sure to have understood it before I move forward. Anytime my friends asks me a question, I will offer judgments and conclusions, such as when they ask me to give an honest feedback of how their project looks, or when someone asks me a question that they are stuck on.

I demonstrate personal awareness and responsibility by taking risks and recognizing that I may not be immediately successful. In this class, I have shown this by stepping outside of my comfort zone and taking risks. This has allowed me to become more adaptable to many situations. When I was doing the baby lab (my artifact), I was not confident in my drawing, but I knew that I did not have to be successful immediately, which helped me to start drawing the realistic face.

Communicating

I am an engaged listener; I ask thought-provoking questions when appropriate and integrate new information. When the teacher is talking in front of the class and giving out new information and instructions, I made sure that I was listening with my full attention towards the speaker. Although I did not ask any questions during class discussions, if I did have any I made sure that I asked the teacher so that I was not missing out from any information. I think that my best form of communication was through written responses especially on tests.

I communicate confidently, using forms and strategies that show attention to my audience and purpose. I have shown this in class by confidently asking any questions or ideas that I had. I communicated through not only speaking verbally but also through projects and labs to demonstrate my understanding. I think that my worst form of communication was visual, because I find drawing quite challenging, and drawing diagrams to support my answers difficult, because of this I think that I want to improve on communicating visually.

One thing that I have improved on this semester is choosing the correct study method. I can use this in my next science classes by making sure to use the same method, which will help me achieve the goals I want.

Something that I did not enjoy very much in this class was the lab that had to be done in the superlab, because it was personally very stressful to finish in a certain amount of time.

Spanish 10 Core Competency Reflection

Communication

My Artifact: A presentation on a song written by a Chilean music band named Quilapayún.

During the process of presenting and researching this project, in my Spanish 10 class, I used my communication skills. I communicated with my partner while creating this, and I also had to communicate to the audience when presenting it. Communication skills were used when I had to listen and respond to my partner’s advice and also when the teacher asked a question at the end of my presentation. I made sure that my ideas were heard for the designing of the slide show, and also when it came to speaking aloud to my partner. I represented my ideas successfully by making sure that my voice was not too quiet and used the presentation to visually show my thoughts. Skills that I gained through this were the ability to communicate more efficiently, speaking up more loudly, and being more confident in what I have researched. An improvement that I want to make if I have the chance to do this presentation again, is trying to look at the audience more often and try to fidget less with my hands when presenting.

Math Self Assessment

When I am sad, angry or frustrated, doing… helps me be more productive or calm.

When I am sad, angry or frustrated, listening to music and spending time with my dog helps me be more productive or calm. I will usually listen to calm music if I am frustrated to calm myself down and most of the time that will help me.

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are…

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are to be friendly and kind. I usually try and build a positive and friendly relationship because that way I will be able to maintain the relationship.

To celebrate an accomplishment such as ____, I …

To celebrate an accomplishment such as getting a high mark for a math test, I sometimes reward myself with food that I have been wanting or I allow myself to spend some time without studying or doing homework.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I go out on a walk with my dog or spend some time off of school work. I usually will need to boost my mood or re-focus when I have been doing a lot of school work so most of the time spending some time on the things I like will help me re-focus.

Career Project

Career Life Project Presentation

Curricular Reflection

My career life goal is to become a veterinarian. The reason for that is because I am passionate about animals and like to connect with them. I have wanted to become a veterinarian ever since I was in elementary school because back then I really liked animals and wanted to have a dog. After many years of convincing I was able to get a dog. She was rescued from a Korean dog meat market and so me and my family adopted her. To become a successful veterinarian my plan is to volunteer at animal shelters and maybe work at a pet store so that I will be able to have more experience than others would have. Through volunteering and working I think that it will make a good step to becoming an experienced veterinarian.

Core Competency Reflection

I can ask open-ended questions to gather information.

I chose this because I was able to demonstrate it during the making of this project. I demonstrated this statement by asking open ended questions to people who already are veterinarians so that I could gather information for my project.

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others.

I demonstrated this when I was in the process of designing my power point. Sometimes I used power points design ideas and changed somethings up and I also created ideas for some of the slides as well.

I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself.

I showed a sense of accomplishment and joy when I was finished creating this project because I felt happy that I was able to finish the project.

I can tell the difference between facts and opinions.

I chose this statement because I was able to tell the difference between a fact and an opinion especially when I was getting advice from veterinarians.

I can explain when something is unfair and advocate for others.

The statement above is a goal that I have moving forward because I find it hard to stand up for others. To get better at it I will try taking small steps first, such as advocating for one of my close friends so that I will feel more comfortable.

Core Competency Goal Setting

Some of the ways I plan to work to build and maintain relationships are…

Some of the ways I plan to work to build and maintain relationships this first semester is to talk to new people and be helpful particularly when it comes to group work by answering questions my group members could have. I also plan on building relationships by meeting/talking to new people and going up to them first and starting a conversation. The is my first goal because I find it hard to start a conversation especially when I do not know them.

I want to celebrate my accomplishments such as…, so I will plan to…

I want to celebrate my accomplishments such as getting a good grade on a test, so I plan to allow myself to have a small break and step away from studying for a short amount of time. I will do this by doing something I enjoy such as watching my favorite tv show, spending time with my dog or just even relaxing. This is my second goal because most of the time after I get a good mark on any assignments or tests I just focus on what is going to happen next and prepare for it. So I wanted to set a goal to let myself know that it’s okay to sometimes celebrate or slow down after an accomplishment.

Favourite Recipe

Scones

I made scones and they tasted buttery, somewhat sweet and flakey. They looked golden brown, looked similar in size and were a little bit crispy on the top. I got to know that scones originated from Scotland. If the recipe is mostly flour, then it is called a flour mixture. The reason I used cold butter when I was making the scones was so that my scones would have nice flakey layers, I also used half an egg so that it would act as a thickener. It was my first time using a pastry blender and it is a tool to mix in hard fat such as butter into flour. A leavening agent is baking powder, baking soda and yeast it is something that makes the dough expand double in size, it also produces carbon dioxide gas. I am most proud of the steps and the results. I am proud of the steps because I was very happy that I could get it done fairly quickly and I was satisfied with the end results because the scones tasted marvelous.

Making and Sharing Reflection

Identify and use appropriate equipment- I was able to identify and use the pastry blender appropriately by being careful of the fact that a pastry blender is sharp and I had to be careful when I was using it.

Critically evaluate the success of the recipe- I was able to critically evaluate by seeing if the food looked visually appealing and tasted good. If the recipe did not look visually appealing or tasted pretty good I would know and understand that I did not successfully make the recipe.

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… I was able to communicate clearly and purposefully during the making of the scones because I made sure that I had a conversation with my group members before I started this lab. I made sure that everyone knew what they were doing so that no one was lost or confused.

I show that I value feedback from others in my group by… I show my group members that I value their feedback by showing it through my actions. As an example during this recipe I was working on a part of the scone and my partner said that I should start measuring out a specific ingredient which I made sure to do as soon as possible.

The ways I communicate while cooking differ from how I communicate at ____ (soccer/ work/ hockey/ piano lessons/ family events/etc) in these ways- During any lessons I have outside of school I usually do not speak a lot with anyone but at foods class I also make sure that I communicate with my group members. With this scone recipe I made sure that I was communicating before and during the lab.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by- This is a goal that I have for myself because I am not good at expressing emotions where I have to physically thank them because I am not very talkative. Something I can do to achieve this goal is to say thank you when the person has done what I had asked them to do.

Arts and Crafts 10

I am an active listener and can communicate clearly with my peers and adults. I help resolve conflicts and help my peers feel included.

I was an active listener by listening to my teacher when he was explaining the instructions to the class for this cross-stitching assignment. Although, some of the instructions I did not understand, which is why I communicated with my teacher and my friends when I was stuck and needed help on a step. I was able to develop skills to help some of my peers by telling them the knowledge that I had since I had known the answers to most of them because I was ahead. For the cross-stitching assignment I was able to tell my peers how to wrap the canvas and help them start the project. I made sure that my friends felt included by having conversations with them and translating the conversations that were going on for a friend that did not understand.

My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

This year I missed my goal to speak more often during class conversations, even though I try it is hard since I think whatever I say might be wrong so I just end up staying quiet. Some words that describe my year are new, stress and fun. The reason new describes my year is because most things were new to me such as having to move to classes and different people in every classroom. Stress also describes my year because I had tests every week from all of my 4 classes in the first semester which I was not very used to. Lastly I chose fun because I had all of my electives in the second semester and I was able to be with my friends from middle school in those classes.

A Useful Educational Website

https://www.desmos.com/calculator

The reason I chose this website is because this is a calculator that my math teacher said would be helpful and it helped me a lot when I wasn’t sure if my answers were wrong or right. Especially during tests since I wanted to be sure that my answers were right and I would not be second guessing myself after the test was done.

A Useful Educational Video

The reason I chose this video is because this helped me study for my graphing test in math. This video also helped me through my confusions that I had in class so it helped me make sure I was 100% understanding the concept.

A Useful Educational Image

Although this is not the exact image, I chose this image because this image helped me memorize the differences and the parts of both animal and plant cells. This definitely helped me for when I was preparing for tests since I personally think that I learn better when there is something for me to visually look at.

An Inspirational Quote

“It always seems impossible until it’s done” -Nelson Mandela

The reason I chose this quote is because when I see an assignment that looks hard I always think that I will never be able to get it finished but in the end I end up finishing it anyway. Overall I chose this quote because it really stuck out to me since it was something that I think of when I would think an assignment is going to be challenging.

A Spanish-Speaking Country

Uruguay

Comparison To Korea

First off to compare the landmarks there are much more older landmarks in Korea than in Uruguay. As an example Korea has more palaces and villages that are popular to tourists but in Uruguay places like beaches are more popular landmarks. As for food Uruguay has lots of food that include meat or sweet desserts and in Korea there are lots of popular food that has been fermented of marinated such as kimchi. Something that they both have are traditional dances, in Uruguay the name of the dance is called candombe which came from the African slaves that were in Uruguay and it is usually performed in the festival called carnival. A traditional dance in Korean is fan dance as you can tell from the name they use a hand fan when performing this dance and it is usually performed by women wearing hanbok. Another thing that they have in common is the fact that most of the people in both countries like soccer. A well known player in Uruguay is Luis Suárez and he is currently playing on Inter Miami. The most famous soccer player in Korea is Son Heung-min and he is playing on Tottenham. The most famous holiday in Uruguay is a festival called carnival it is where they show their culture by dancing and music. A holiday in Korea that is celebrated by basically all of the people is lunar new years day. I would like to visit Uruguay someday so that I can see all the famous beaches and try some of their food.

Core Competency Reflection

I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener: I demonstrated this by asking and listening to my partners questions. I made sure that I was paying attention to the questions that were being asked so that I could respond with the best of my ability so that my partner was sure that I was listening.

I work with others to achieve a goal: I worked with my partner to achieve the same goal which was to finish this project the best we can. We both made sure that we knew what we were doing and split the amount of work in half so that not only one of us was doing all the work.

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others: I created the idea of how we should layout the information on to our poster so that it is pleasing to look at. I was able to build off ideas that my partner gave me because she suggested that we make the letters big for our poster and I made the letters the color of the Uruguayan flag.

I give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals: When I asked my partner and she suggested what to change I made sure that my work was changed so that I could get the best work out of her opinion. I made sure that I also gave my partner feedback when she asked me too or when there was something that I thought would be better if it was changed.

I can identify my strengths and identify my potential: This is a goal I have for myself going forward. I set this as a goal because I am not very confident in my work even when others think that it is good so I want to become more confident and be able to identify my strengths and potential.
