The first thing I took away from the CPR presentation is that doing CPR along with using an AED increases the survival rate of a cardiac arrest patient from 10% to over 40%. This is why it makes it so crucial that you send someone for an AED right away and begin to do CPR to get the patients heart back into a shockable rhythm. The second thing I took away is that you will most likely break someones ribs and sternum when doing CPR because of the force you have to apply. This could be unpleasant in the moment but is important to manually pump the heart to get it back into a rhythm. The third thing that I took away from the presentations is that using naloxone won’t negatively affect a person if they aren’t overdosing. This means that even if you suspect an overdose and you are wrong, it wont harm someone to administer the drug either way.
Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection
I can analyse evidence to make judgements. When approaching a person that is in cardiac arrest, it is important to take a look at the surroundings to see if there is evidence of a possible overdose or if it is a heart attack or something else. This step is important to ensuring that you know what steps to take next in that specific situation to maximise your potential of saving someone.
