Cooking At Home #3: Option 3: Building Your Skills – Tools

I used a Coffee Maker to make my parents some coffee.

What are the safety concerns with using this tool? Pouring the coffee out of the container as it is extremely hot and will burn you

What is the proper way to use this tool? You pour water into the sides, then put a coffee filter inside, insert coffee beans on the top of the filter and then click start.

If someone did not have this item in their kitchen, is there something else they could use that serves the same purpose? The only other thing that could substitute for the coffee maker is a kettle.

What dish/baked good did you use it to create? Who did you share it with? I didn’t share it because it was for my parents

Did you use a recipe or did you make it up?  I made it up

If you were to make this dish again, what would you change? Nothing

What challenges did you have to overcome? How did you overcome them? There were no challenges

What was your greatest success in this dish (either in the final product, or in the preparation)?  Why? The greatest success was not putting too much water into the sides and making too much coffee for my parents.

What are you most proud of about this experience? Why? I’m most proud of the fact that I can now make coffee whenever I need to in the future

Cooking At Home 2: Option 1: Using What You Have

I made Burgers with what I had at the time
(I will send more photos via Teams)

Use the 5 senses to write a description It looks tasty, It sounds like N/A its smells really good, It tastes amazing, it feels rough.

Did you use a recipe or did you make it up?  I made it up

If you were to make this dish again, what would you change? I would probably change the neatness of the final product but that’s about it

What challenges did you have to overcome? How did you overcome them? The main challenge I had to overcome was compressing the patty because they would always break apart, I overcame that challenge by attempting over and over again until it finally worked out in my favour

What was your greatest success in this dish (either in the final product, or in the preparation)?  Why? The greatest success was the fact it didn’t fall apart when it was finished and it didn’t burn while on the barbecue

What are you most proud of about this experience? Why? I’m proud of not burning the burgers on the barbecue as it was my first time using cooking Burgers.

Cooking at Home #6

Tell us what you made! I made Piroshki

Use the 5 senses to write a description.

Sight: It looks like a pie crust, It sounds like n/a, it smells like buttermilk and cheese, it tastes like cheese, it feels like a pie crust

Tell us about the tradition. It is a Russian/Ukrainian recipe that has existed for a while now and my Grandma decided to spice it up a bit and add some small differences to the recipe.

Where/when did this tradition start? My Grandma started making it when my parents first moved into her house.

What is this meaning behind it for you? To me it means that we still look back at our roots and we still appreciate them.

For your family? To them it means the exact same thing, but to my Grandma it means Patriotism

What is the best part of this tradition? My Grandma has perfected the recipe thanks to all the times she has made it.

What challenges did you have to overcome? How did you overcome them? I had no challenges because I had help from my Grandma who was watching me cook.

What was your greatest success in this dish (either in the final product, or in the preparation)?  Why? The greatest success was the fact that it turned out perfect and none of them exploded (the ones that look like they did are supposed to look like that).

What are you most proud of about this experience? Why? I’m proud of the fact I was able to make a quite complex dish but thanks to the help of my Grandma I was able to get it done

Cooking At Home Option 3: Building Your Skills – Technique

Oatmeal Cookies

What technique/skill did you choose? Why did you want to learn or improve on this? I chose the cracking an egg cleanly technique, I wanted to improve on it because I always kept messing up when trying to crack an egg and the yoke comes out all scratched from the shell.

o What video/website(s) did you use to learn more about the skill? I watched a YouTube video by real simple like and the channels name it was quite simple really it just takes practice.

o What dish/baked good did you create to practice the skill? I baked Oatmeal Cookies since it was the easiest thing to do at the time as we had all the ingredients we needed for it.

o What advice do you have for someone who wants to learn this skill too? Just practice, it takes time to get good at cracking eggs even if you do it won’t always come out perfect sometimes you’ll mess up but that’s okay.

o What challenges did you have to overcome? How did you overcome them? The challenge I had to overcome was trying to crack the shell without having the yoke slide out and onto the counter, I just used a medium sized bowl instead of the small bowl I was using before.

o What was your greatest success in this dish (either in the final product, or in the preparation)? Why? The final product was a success in the fact that they tasted extremely tasty and I would make them again.

o What are you most proud of about this experience? Why? I’m most proud of cracking the egg perfectly on the 4th try when I was thinking I would get it on the 8th or 10th time.

Safety and Sanitation

One of my favorite food labs that we have done is eggs, it was technically a solo lab since we all made our own eggs, I made scrambled. I thought since they were so easy in the lab, I should do them at home. Which is what I did, but it turned out better, I got everything ready and started to make the eggs, now logically thinking I grabbed the oven mitts (since pan is hot) but there were no mitts, which is bad. So, then I touched the hot pan handle and burnt myself. It wasn’t that bad of a burn, but I should’ve checked first that there were oven mitts before I started cooking the eggs

Kitchen Tools and Appliances

The first lab we did, which was Cookies, was the first time I used the equipment in the room, I was in a new group with new people and it was a fun first time baking in the room. It was confusing at first but we got a\the hang of it. My favorite piece of equipment was the Electric Mixer. It was the second time I’ve ever used an Electric Mixer and it is quite effective at its job, instead of having to mix it by hand, you can use an electric mixer which makes the job much easier (at least in my opinion). We’ve only used the Mixer a few times, but haven’t used it lately.

Most Memorable Food Experience

My Most Memorable Food Experience was when I was making myself breakfast one morning, now since nobody else was there, I started making Hash Browns since my dad showed me how to make them. He always made them every Saturday and he makes it look so easy (Probably since he has done them like hundreds of time). I always put some seasoning on them so they wouldn’t taste just like fried potatoes.
