Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

In the acids and bases lab I learnt how to improve apon apply my knowlege. Before the lab I was able to make accurate predictions on the acidity and basity of each species. I did this both by refering to other resources such as the teachers notes and connecting to the concepts I had already learnt in grade 11. For instance, I was able to determin that KOH was basic because OH- receves a proton. However I was also able to think outside the box when my predictions did not correlate to the resutes of the lab. For example a solution that should have been neutral, turned out acidic. I connected this consept to ocean acidification. I knew that carbon dioxide could make ocean water more acidic, therefore it can also make solutions acidic. That connection caused me to have a greater understanding of chemestry and help me in the future to better connect topics.

French 12 Cooking Show

Creative Thinking

In this project, my partner and I had to work together to create a script in french on how to make Sosis Bandari. We had to use creative thinking to make a comprehenive skript, and record the cooking process. One example when we used creative thinking is the recording process. My group limited time to cook the dish, and we were worried we would run out of time. Instead of recording us each step chronologicaly, we decided to record the cooking first, then speaking the lines while it was cooking on the stove. Another problem we encountered was when writing the script. We needed to include as much vocabulary as posible. We desided to list the to cooking exquipment (such as the stove, and pan) in addition to the ingredients. The last issue we encountered inculding the grammar points. To do this I looked at some of the example sentences in textbook, to inspire us to include as many grammar points as possible. All these creative skill helped my group complite this project.

Lindsey’s Conics Project

For this projects I used several functions throuout my math courses. This includes linear, quadradic, rational, exponential, trigonometric, circles, ellipses, and hyperbola functions.

Hyperbola: I chose a hyperbola to represent the bridge of my nose. It was perfect for this role because it is symmetrical in shape (like the face) and is concave to match the curve of my bridge.

Circles: For my iris and pupils I used circles because they are perfectly round and symmetrical

Ellipses: I used ellipses for many of my facial features, because of it’s round shape it but is not symmetrical. It was the perfect graph for the top of my head, which is oval shaped. For my eye brows I used two different radiuses of ellipses for the arched effect of my eyebrows

Exponential: I used exponential for my jaw because of the way the angle of my increases exponentially and for the horizontal asymptote matched the chin of my jaw

Linear: linear functions were perfect for the slant of my eyebrow. It finished off the shape perfectly. I also used it to draw the right side of my hair line because it was a strait line.

Quadradic Functions: This was suited for the shape of my lips to draw my smile, And the eyelids because of the symmetrical curve to my eyes.

Rational functions: I needed a square with rounded edges for my teeth. I recalled that a degree 4 function has rounded edges like teeth. To create vertical sides, I used vertical asymptotes.

Cubic functions: I used the cubic function to graph my hair line. The right side of the function gave my hairline, and the left side of the function was my hair.

Trigonometric functions: I used a cosine function to graph the base of my nose. This was ideal because the curve of my nose matched the maximum values of a trigonometric function. Arccosine was perfect for the waves of my hair.

In addition to the functions I used to match my facial features. I also leared how to use inequalities to shade in parts of my face. For ellipese I had to solve for x to do with the inequalites.

Anatomy and Physiology 12 Core Competency Self-Assessment

One of the labs I competed in Anatomy and Physiology 12 class was the heart disection lab. The obective of this lab was to lable the parts of the heart we learned in class on a sheep’s heart. This task was difficult because the heart looks very different from the heart diagrams we looked at. Instead of looking at the shapes of each part, I traced the path of blood throughout the heart, and was able to use that information to find the parts of the heart. At the end of the lab, I got confused about where the pulmonary semilunar valve was located. To help me solve this problem, I demonstrated collaboration by asking for help from with my peers. We shared ideas to understand the answers and complet the lab. After identifying all parts of the heart I was able to use socail awarness to take ownership of my learning, and answer the writen questions. I looked at my notes, textbook and understanding of material to evalute the answers of to lab questions.

Core Compitancy Reflection: Pre Calc

Option 1 – Collaboration

During the corse of pre-calculus 12 I have learned how to work with a group. In the start of the semester I often worked ahead of my peers and spoke over their ideas. But during trigonometric identities, I realized there were many ways to solve a question. Often times I would be unable to find the . Our group was able to look at the formula sheet and discus different ideas. To be sure that we were working as a team, I alowed another member to write the steps. This alowed us to have our own roles in the group and have everyone included in the problem solving. Trignometric functions taught me profile 3 of collaboration, now I can take on different roles and tasks in the group and work respectfully and safely in our shared space. In the future I hope to draw on past experiences to negotiate and develop group processes. That way my group can disscover stratagies to quickly solve problems with minimal mistakes.

Core Competency Goals

I make an effort to include missing voices/ perspectives by speaking to other group members to inclued them.

In group works I sometime take the lead too quickly, and I should make sure everyone’s ideas are heard and everyone has an active part in the project or activity. I should also be sure everyone can understand the material before starting group work. This will increase the team moral creating a better work environment. When the group works more efficently I will work more efficently as well.

I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by choosing the clubs and volunteer opritunities I join

This year I would like to join more leadership opritunities, to increase how much I contribute to my commuinity. To do this need to carfully consider my school workload so I do not overwork myself. I plan to discuss my different choises with my friends and family, to understand what opritunites are viable.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen when I tutor other students

When I comunicate to my peers, I need to be clear and conciess in my explaination. Sometimes I explain things too quickly, and my tutees do not understand. I will slow down the speed at which I explain things and I will think one step ahead of the student. That will decrease my number of mistakes, and help my tutee understand.

Group Work in Math

Group work allows people to complete more work than one person can do alone. This project is perfect for group work because a whole unit needed to be explained. Having a group also allows for more creative work, because the group can brainstorm unique ideas. Occasionally, if a group does not communicate there can be a conflict, and less work will be completed.

I know the group is working well together when I see people using class time efficiency. Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the first day of the project. I set aside time to discuss ideas on how to do the project, and divided the work. I show others that I truly value their contributions by looking over their work, giving suggestions and complimenting their work. If I notice that all the work has not been completed, that’s a sign that my group needs help and we did not divide the work evenly and I need to do more work

Curricular Competency Reflection

Knowing all the vocabulary from this chapter was very useful in this activity. I was able to quickly write sentences without having to constantly check my spelling. I did encounter a few difficulties. Some sentences I didn’t know how to write in French. For example I wanted to write, “I am and intermediate skier,” but I did not know the word for intermediate. Instead I changed the sentence to “I am learning to ski.” Another challenge I faced was remembering words I learned a while ago. I could not remember if “to cost” was a regular or irregular verb. In order to overcome this obstacle I referred to “Word Reference,” a translating app, to help me. Before I summited my response, I double checked my grammar with a peer and my teacher, and discovered I made a few mistakes. I corrected them and made a note to remember them in the future. Overall, I realize there is a gap between my ability communicating in my first language compared to my second, but with a bit of help, I am able to get my ideas across.

Core Competency Reflection

My support network is helpful to me because they can look over my work for any grammar mistakes I may have made.  This will help me be aware of possible mistakes to prevent them in the future.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include studing the information before hand, making it quicker to write my paragraph quickly.

When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I ask my peers what they wrote for inspiration. Although I will not use the same ideas because we all have different experiences. Their advice will help me get past my writing block.

I need to improve my ability to communicate clearly and purposefully in areas such as my paragraph response. I made a few grammar mistakes in my writing my response, although I was able to correct them with some help, I need to remember them in the future.
