1.6: Exponent Laws

  • If the exponent have the same base all raised to the same power, it will equal ‘1’
  • Anything to the power of 0 will always equal ‘1’
  • when there is an exponent multiplying another exponent with the same base, add the exponents to simplify it
  • when there is an exponent dividing another exponent with the same base, subtract the exponents to simplify it
  • If there is a negative base to the power of an odd number with or without brackets, the final answer will be a negative number
  • If there is a negative base to the power of an even number inside of brackets, the final answer will be a positive number
  • If there is a negative base to the power of an even number without brackets, the final answer will be a negative number

ex. -24= (-)(2)(2)(2)(2)= -16

ex. (-2)4 = (-2)(-2)(-2)(-2)= 16

ex. -23= (-)(2)(2)(2)= -8

ex. (-2)3= (-2)(-2)(-2)= -8
