English First People’s 11 Reflection

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Comprehend and connect: This assignment had me view many different First Nations texts, both authentic and non authentic, which allowed me to start to distinguish between the two. Reading and watching over these texts enhanced my ability to comprehend information and make my own conclusions from that information. These skills will be useful in my life as I can start to break down stereotypes in media for myself in an attempt to stop them spreading. This would expose Non Indigenous people’s to our First Nations peoples through a non tainted view, and would hopefully make a difference in the treatment of Indigenous peoples.

Core Competencies Reflection

ThinkingCC: In this assignment I formed my ideas through the outline given to me by Ms. Hothi, it allowed me to put my ideas down as I was exploring texts so I wouldn’t have to try and remember all my ideas later. It helped me format my structure of my essay and gave me a clear view of my topics in my 3 body paragraphs and how to transition between them. I would then generate ideas as I was writing in order to fit in new information or add insight/personal voice to my writing. In future I would also write down quotes as I watched/read texts as it would save me time going looking for them later.

Calculus 12

Critical Thinking

The problem I chose was problem f) in the integrals formative. It combines basic integral knowledge, precise algebra, and the ability to be flexible in the approach to the question. This was a problem I originally struggled with, doing the formative after the winter break had made me forget a lot of my integral rules; so when this problem came up on the formative, I was lost. After submitting my formative and getting the results back, I realized I had made multiple errors. I attempted to resolve it but kept getting stuck on the radical, so I re-watched the video Ms. Eaton had posted and then found a different video on youtube on the same kind of question. After doing this I realized that could substitute the radicand for u and substitute dx for du. These adjustments in my path to solving this problem show how I can recognize that I’m not always going to be immediately successful and outside help can be used as a tool to break through any mental roadblocks. I believe my approach to this question demonstrates critical thinking as I knew I was in need of help and figured out where the help could come from, I would like to grow as a critical thinker by experimenting with the question on my own a bit before reaching out for help. Trying the question in different ways, using previous knowledge, and experimenting with the order of my work; all of these things could give me a better chance at solving the question without external help, and I believe that is the next step in my critical thinking progression.

Chemistry 11 Titration

Curricular Competency Explanation

A titration is when a base is added to an acid to find the neutralization point of the acid. The reason this is different from other methods of finding is that we use a more accurate tool to add the base, this tool is called a burette and it allows us to add little drops or half drops which are more controlled and this is needed because the neutralization point is very slim so full drops may make the solution more basic and not neutral. The titration was used to determine the neutralization point of NaOH and HCl. The equivalence point of the titration is 15.49+-0.05mL. I knew I had reached the endpoint of my titration because the slight pink colour didn’t fade after mixing the solution for thirty seconds. My results showed that I used 14.80 +-0.05mL of NaOH in my final trial. This gave me a darker shade of pink than I had hoped but next time I can add quarter drops when closer to the equivalence point in order to obtain a more accurate measure of the endpoint.

Core Competency Reflection

My group used communication in our experiment as for our first two trials our solution was a pink that was much too dark, meaning we overshot the equivalence point. We had to rewatch our video, realize where we went wrong, and change it for the following trials. I found it very helpful when I was doing the titration for my partner to comment on how much of the NaOH I had used and then I could cross reference that number to my original trials to let myself know if I was close or far away from my endpoint. Once each trial had finished we made sure to record our data and re-watch the videos; looking for any errors that could be re-corrected. Next time I would like to improve my patience when adding drops near the endpoint, as I began to get impatient and add half drops instead of quarter drops when the solution was already extremely close to being balanced.

Life-Saving Measures

During this week’s CPR and Naloxone training we discussed many critical points and had some significant takeaways. One of the more valuable things I learned when administering Naloxone was that it isn’t harmful if you aren’t having an overdose, this means if you are in a situation where you aren’t sure if someone is overdosing you can inject them with Naloxone without any fear of harming the individual. Naloxone covers the same receptors that the drug uses, neutralizing the effect but if there is no drug in the system it will counteract nothing which isn’t harmful to the patient. Another takeaway I learned is that in a scenario where you are administering CPR you are very likely going to break the patient’s ribs, and if you do break the ribs it means you are pushing deep enough. Previously I believed that the ribs breaking only happened in specific cases and was to be avoided when in reality it is going to happen and is a good indicator of proper technique in your CPR. The final major takeaway I had from our two presentations was that Naloxone is not to be injected into the veins in the arms, but instead into fatty parts of the body: butt, thighs, and shoulders are all good examples of proper places to administer Naloxone.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

“I can analyze evidence to make judgments.” I demonstrated this by taking the evidence that we know and dissecting it into critical important pieces and less important information, this is an important aspect of critical thinking because it makes you take what you KNOW and decipher what you NEED from it.

Core Competencies Reflection

I prepared well for this test by studying with a partner and quizzing each other on the vocab, I also made the best use out of my class time during our “pink slip competition” which helped me learn what I needed more focus on studying. What I could do better next time was making sure I knew all the vocab as that cost me a few marks, the way I will do this is by finding small tricks in words to help me remember (ex. Sal y pimienta both start with S and P just like their English counterparts: salt and pepper).

The Simpsons

My analysis

Creating and Communicating

During the start of our unit on The Simpsons, Mr. Cook went over the literary devices we would see while watching the show, this helped me pick them up as I knew what terminology and setup they had. Seeing irony, allusion, and satire in action enhanced my understanding of their uses and how they can make a moment carry more weight or depth. Now I understand that when Bart says “Humour thy name is Krusty” he doesn’t actually mean that Krusty’s name is humour, he is just making an allusion to Hamlet saying “Fragility thy name is woman”, which is comedy within itself because Bart not only has no knowledge of Shakespeare’s work but is also illiterate. I was able to express my ideas by making use of a rough draft before I began writing my good copy; I also made notes of moments that carried weight and moments I felt I could use in my essay while watching. I also referenced the episodes: “Krusty Gets Busted” and “Homer the Heretic” to further strengthen my understanding of the literary devices as well as strengthen the points I brought up in my writing. After completing my written work I went skimmed over my text looking for any obvious corrections; then after completing that I went home and let my thoughts and ideas build up in my head so that when I came back the next day I could edit with further clarity and precision.

Core Competency Reflection

I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is I build my arguments and ideas based on the requirements of the assignment meaning that often I touch on all of the necessary points I need to in order to obtain full marks. Looking through the rubric first gives me a strong understanding of what is being asked of me and how I can not only achieve but exceed the expectations of the assignment. I remain open-minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I realized nearing the start of my writing that my original idea didn’t fully represent the question of “What makes The Simpsons so successful?” so I didn’t give up or lose the will to complete the assignment, instead I found out how much of my work I could change slightly so it fit the question better and worked around it to create an essay that relates back to the question, my title, and my thesis statement. An example of when I built upon someone else’s ideas is when I was struggling to find a suitable title for my essay so I asked my mom for help and with her idea of relating the title to “the dominance, The Simpsons carried through the 20th century” I was able to construct a title that embodied my thesis statement and draws any potential reader in.

Precalculus 12 Critical Thinking & Collaboration Self-Assessment

Reflection

I know the group is working well together when I hear my groupmembers and I talking about the problem and offering different ideas and views on possible solutions; listening to and accepting others’ ideas while simultaneously giving constructive criticism when needed. I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated at the end where I am able to prove the product rule to be true by using the rules of another proven rule; the exponential rule. I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I got stuck on the final step and couldn’t get my equation to a place where it could be proven by another rule, so I didn’t become trapped in my own ideas and allowed myself to talk to peers and ask for help which eventually let me adopt a method to solve the problem which was brought to my eyes through someone else’s help. If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to slow down and get to the root of the problem, making sure to try and maintain a fair impartial view of each members opinions. Once taking those opinions into account, trying my best to resolve a solution while making sure to not disvalue others thoughts and ideas on the topic.

Our Utopian City

SnowCity

Zoe, Eshana, Nick

Blue

The colour blue symbolizes trust and loyalty two things that our group believes is crucial to a good city. Trust and loyalty between citizens establish strong bonds and connections amongst people which we believe is really important. This colour can be found throughout the city on buildings and in the sky.

White

The colour white symbolizes successful beginnings and protection. With a new city our group believes heavily in the citizens feeling safe and the colour white symbolizes that. Also, successful beginnings are key in the start of a new city so white seems fitting. White can be seen all around our city as white is the colour of snow.

Building Healthy Relationships

One of the values that our group feels that is really important to have is healthy relationships. The buildings in our city that represent healthy relationships are: The hotel, this spot could be used for honeymoons/family vacations. The restaurant, this spot can be used for family dinners, date nights, and outings with friends. Park this spot is a place where young kids and moms can make friends and connect through play. Houses that are close together establishing a trust between the families. I believe healthy relationships is a key value to have in any town because whether its friends, family, or lovers’ healthy relationships establish not only trust but also a sense of belonging as you feel happy knowing you are surrounded by people your close to.

Health

Health is a trait that each of us value. How we included it in our city was by adding a hospital, gym, and people either snowboarding or skiing. A hospital is a good way of showing health because they try to keep you in good health if you aren’t. They tell you what to do or take to stay healthy. The gym represents health because the gym help you maintain your weight and, keeps you on a good diet. Your weight and what you eat are a big part of help. Skiing and Snowboarding are both sports and doing sports is good for your health so is the communication you have with your team. they keep you motivated and help you have a positive mindset. This is also a part of being healthy, not just with your body but healthy for you mentally. All of these are located in our city. The hospital is next to the church, the gym is next to the restaurant and the snowboarders and skiers are by the snowy mountains.

Community

Living in a city means, living in a place where community is important. A Good community where its safe, happy, kind, and has a great environment, is where people would want to live for the rest of their lives. Snow city’s community is a joyful and free place to explore, that includes companionship, goodwill, devotion, etc. Its important for this community to stay positive, in order for people to feel safe and confident. At Snow City our community is always fun and cheerful, when people ice skate around the Christmas tree in the park , ski or snowboard on top of the mountains, and spread love and kindness to each other while doing it.

Reflection

This project is about figuring out what your true values are and then expressing them through a city design. The Program we used to create our city is called City Creator, and we chose to use this program because we found it was the easiest to work with and still come out with a good-looking finished product. Our group communicated through Snapchat, we made a group chat and used it to talk about ideas and what they were looking for in the project, everyone’s ideas were listen to and respected and people were not afraid to ask for help from group members. My responsibility in the group was to do the “Building healthy relationships” paragraph and the “significant colours” meanings. We made sure each member contributed to the design by doing the design together and always adding in your own ideas to make the final product an accurate depiction of all our thoughts. In my opinion we worked extremely well as a group, being able to communicate properly and diving the work evenly were big helps and the end result was good, and we finished before schedule. Decisions were made through all of us, and we made sure each member voiced their own opinion on the choice. We did not have any problems and there is not really anything I would change for next time as I believe we were efficient and worked well as a group. The final product was clean and brought our ideals to life, and I believe that our group is entirely happy with the finished product.
