Transforming Parabolas

Parent Function Graph

Personal Equation Graph

The parent function doesn’t have a, h or k, but mine does which is why it’s been transformed compared to the parent function. The “a” changes the way the parabola is shaped and weather the parabola opens up or down. If a>1, the parabola will become compressed. If 0<a<1, then the parabola will expand/stretch. If the “a” is positive, the parabola will open up and if the “a” is negative, it will open down. The “k” changes the y point of the vertex/ shift the parabola up or down. If it is negative, then the vertex will start below the 0 point of the y-axis. If the k is positive the vertex Will start above the 0 point of the y-axis. The “h” changes the x point of the vertex and shifts the parabola left or right. If “h” is positive, the parabola will shift left. If “h” is negative, the parabola will shift right.

Self-Assessment

1. For “h” and “k” they are both affected by positive or negative as I expressed from the writing above. The thing that makes them different is that the positive and negative affect the “h” differently. .

2. I was able to use vocabulary to express my understanding through words like vertex, shift, stretch, compress, and open up/down.

3. I was able to show my information clearly through formatting and labelling the parabola as to not confuse the reader.
