Social Studies 10 Reflection

Propaganda Poster

Socials Reflection

Self Reflection

This project showcases art skills and creativity. This project fills out the “communication” core competency. I chose to write my reflection about this project because I found it more of a fun project, since I got to draw and use my creativity. I learned about how everyone pitched in with the war effort with their different skills from gardening to flying fighter planes.

Core Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. I chose this statement because my poster conveys my information in a clear and organized way with drawn pictures and a simple written statement. I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to. I chose this statement because I had to choose who I was conveying my war message to, before making the poster for it. I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself. I chose this statement because I was happy in how the poster turned out. I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas. I chose this statement because I faced some setbacks in the design process of the poster when trying to figure out what would convey my message the best, while being organized and appealing. I can reflect on my thinking. I chose this statement to use as my goal moving forward because I don’t usually reflect on my thinking in my day to day, as I only reflect when I need to for edublogs. I will work towards achieving this goal by doing my work right when it’s assigned to give myself more time to reflect on it when it’s finished.

The Simpsons

My Analysis

Creating and Communication

This unit helped me learn about the literary devices, irony, satire and allusion by showing me how they’re used everyday. In this unit, we learned how The Simpsons uses these literary devices to create a humorous and light show, from heavy or dark topics. I expressed my ideas and used concrete evidence, by explaining the literary devices used in the show and giving an example of that device in a structured paragraph. An example of this is how I talked about the show using irony. This, especially in the opening scene in how it gives a angelic and heaven like feel, when the opposite topics are present in the show. I improved clarity and refined my text by keeping my thoughts concise, creating well organized paragraphs, and choosing quality over quantity as best as I could.

Core Competency Reflection

I can describe how satire, irony and/or allusion relates to Scooby-Doo. In The Simpsons we hear a character say “I would’ve gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids”, which is an allusion to a line said in the popular TV show, Scooby-Doo.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when I use notes taken in class, about a particular idea or literary device and using those to expand on in my own words. I did this when explaining the “heaven and angelic” like opening to the show, elaborating on the irony of it.

I respectfully advocate for my needs by asking fellow classmates for notes if I didn’t quite get all of them down, and asking the teacher for help when I need it. I usually try my best to figure out what I need to do on my own, then double checking with the teacher, to see if I need to tweak my explanations or writing in any way.
