Graphing my parabola

By Tanner

Significance

My parabola is in the red and the original parabola is in green which is y = x2. They are very different my parabola is much wider and goes in a downward direction, while the original parabola is not a wide and goes in a upward direction. The vertex in my equation is (5,-5), while the vertex in the original parabola is (0,0).

My ‘a’ value. In my equation my ‘a’ value is -1/4. This is important because it tells you if your parabola is going to up or down. A negative ‘a’ value makes your parabola go downwards, while a positive ‘a’ value makes your parabola go up. It also tells you whether your parabola is going to have a maximum or minimum value. If your ‘a’ value is a fraction your parabola will be much wider than if it’s a whole number. My ‘a’ value tells me the I’m going to have a wider parabola that goes in a downward direction and it has a maximum value. The ‘a’ value on the original value is 1. It different to the original parabola because the ‘a’ value is a whole number in the original, so it’s not as wide. The ‘a’ value is also positive so it goes up with a minimum value.

My ‘h’ value. In my equation my ‘h’ value is 5. In my equation it may look like -5 but when you put it on the graph you change it to positive, and the same goes for the other way around. My ‘h’ value is important because it tells me what the axis of symmetry is, which is 5. It also tells me my ‘x’ value in my vertex, which is also 5. My parabola’s ‘h’ value is very different from the original equation. In the original parabola the ‘h’ value is 0, so the axis of symmetry is different from my parabola.

My ‘k’ value. In my equation my ‘k’ value is -5. The ‘k’ value is important because it gives you the ‘y’ value in your vertex. The ‘k’ value also tells you what your maximum or minimum value is. To find this you look at your ‘a’ value to see if it goes up or down. In my equation it goes down so I have a maximum value, and to find that value you jus use your ‘k’ value. So I have a maximum value of -5. In the original parabola the ‘k’ is 0. So the minimum value is 0, which is very different from my parabola, which has a maximum value of -5.

Self-Assessment

Give an example from the assignment where you respresented the same mathematical idea in three different ways.

I started by writing my equation down, then I wrote it in desmos and to be able to see it visually on a graph. I then compared it to the original parabola the was given and compared the differences of the two parabolas.

Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate you understanding.

I used my mathematical vocabulary when I was explaining the importance of the ‘a’, ‘h’, and ‘k’ values of my parabola, and how my parabola is much different from the original parabola.

Give an example from this assignment where you use formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

I demonstrated my learning in an organized way by using desmos to get a visual of my parabola. I also clearly talked about each of of the 3 values by separating them into different paragraphs. I colour coded my parabola and the original parabola so people would know the difference.

Romeo and Juliet Reflection

This was the first Shakespeare play I learned about, and after reading Romeo and Juliet, it taught me a sense of who Shakespeare is and how he writes his plays. Shakespeare likes to add hidden “morality “messages, and most of them I already knew, but it taught me how the people from the Elizabethan period learned these qualities. I think Shakespeare wanted his audience to learn how moral behaviors. There were many examples throughout the play showing a moral act and how when someone wasn’t being moral, they would usually end up dying in the play. Overall, I found this Shakespeare play entertaining and I learned a lot from it.

Racism within Canada with regard to To Kill a Mockingbird.

There are many examples within this literature and the world that demonstrate the concept of racism. To begin, racism is a horrible human behavior that should not be expectable. Racism is a major problem that has been a problem for an extended period. A notable example was showed in To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson was a friendly and innocent black man. Because of his skin color, he got accused and punished for it. The concept of racism in Canada is far less bad than it is in the United States. Canada is more accepting to all cultures than the United States is. For all the African Americans wanted to come to Canada for a better life. This demonstrates how Canada is more accepting than the United States is. Canada has delt with many racism problems throughout the years as well. After reading To Kill a Mockingbird my opinion on racism has not changed at all. Racism is still a horrible thing and after reading the book it made me despise racism even more. Overall, if everyone treated everyone the same the would be a lot less problems in our society.

My Model Town

Creating a model factory town

Name of the town: Bromden Factory Town

Company Name: Bromden Industries

Resources Available: Coal, wood, cooper, gold, wheats, cotton.

Elements of the Town: Cotton mill, apprentice buildings, blacksmith, factory’s, stores, apartments.

Population: 10,069

Explanation / Brief History: The town is located in western England. It was a popular and growing town, because of its great resources, and large workforce. The people made anywhere from 10 cents a week to around 50 cents a week depending on your job and work ethic. People work hard in this town, but liked to have fun. It also had good weather most of the time.

Media Fluency Reflection

It was pretty easy to build the town. My friend and I spent a lot of time making it look as realistic as possible, and adding a lot of detail to it. We used Fortnite Creative to build our factory model town. For my brainstorming I built all the roads first, then just built a rough copy of all the buildings to see how I liked it. When I finally had a design I liked, I started to add all the details and finishing touches. I didn’t use any sources other then some of Mrs. Mattson’s lessons and my imagination. I don’t think there is a better software then what I used. Its similar to Minecraft but on a bigger scale, and I think that makes it look more realistic. Its an easy software to use, but takes a lot of time if you want to make it look good.

How to use a comma

By Tanner

We created a an instruction video on how to use a comma for our English nine class. This was created and designed by Kian and myself. Most of our notes were from Mrs. G’s worksheets.

About Me

My Bio

I play box and field lacrosse. When I am not playing lacrosse. I like to go mountain biking in the summer, and skiing in the winter. Some things I want to get better at is editing videos, so I can make cool sports clips.

My Favourite Website

https://www.youtube.com/

I chose YouTube because on YouTube I can watch sports clips, sports highlights, and I can watch funny content.

My Favourite Video

I chose this video because I want to learn a backflip this winter on skies. I would like to land this because I already know how to 360 and do grabs, and I feel like this is the next easiest trick to try and land. Video credits to Olly Lenzner.

My Favourite Image

I chose this picture of me because this is what I love to do, and what makes me happy. I my friend took this picture of me at Burnaby air park,

My favourite Quote

Winners never quit, and quitters never win.

– Vince Lombardi

This means a lot to me because this shows a lot in sports games where the quitter lose. I like people who always try their best to help their team win. Even if your not the best on your team, by not quitting with help your team a lot.
