Anatomy and Physiology 12: Blood Lab

A: Drops of blood, each mixed with a different antigen.
B: Checking for anemia
C: My lab results

About the Lab

The most stressed I have been in school, yet the lab was very interesting and unique and I was glad I did it. After pricking my pinkie, I placed a few drops in each circle, and had Mr. Asano mix in antigen A in one circle, antigen B in the other, and Rh factor in the last. After checking for agglutination, I was able to determine that my blood type was O and my Rh factor was positive, due to non of the red blood cells clumping in circles A and B, but clumping in the Rh circle.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. I can analyze evidence to make judgements- After analyzing the three circles of blood I saw that clumping of red blood cells only occurred in the Rh factor circle and based on that information, I was able to determine what blood type I have.
  2. I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way- Based on what we learned about red blood cells having antigens, and there being antibodies in the blood, I was able to understand how this lab was able to determine our blood type and explain it to a classmate.
  3. I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself- The hard part of this lab for me was getting the blood from my finger, which took about 20 minutes, but it was nearly painless. I was glad to finally do it as I have always wondered about my blood type.
