My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

My grade 9 year was a long, stressful but also rewarding year of personal and academic growth. This year I enjoyed my English class where we learned about ancient literature. This year I realized I learn best by listening to the curriculum instead of reading it over and over again trying to memorize it. When I am having difficulty with something, I usually try to find solutions online. If I cannot find solutions online I ask someone for help and if that doesn’t succeed, I try to figure out the issue myself.

I chose Perplexity because it makes researching and gathering information much easier. Perplexity also links their sources so you can check them and make sure the sources aren’t biased or bad information.

I chose the movie Harriet because it gave me perspective on the slave trade. Instead of it just being words on paper I could see what life was back then for slaves and how much better life is now.

I chose this picture because I really liked the French Revolution unit. Learning about the struggles of the common man back in the 18th century was really eye opening.

An Inspirational Quote

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

I chose this quote because sometimes you have to go through months, if not years, worth of hard work to achieve your dreams.

 Is violence justified during a revolution/protest?

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project 

The use of AI helped me gather information and sources much quicker than I would have by myself and also gave me context behind the information it was showing and told me how it might be biased.

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI 

I gathered the information AI gave me and summarized it in my own words and made sure to not copy and paste exactly what the AI gave me to make sure I wasn’t plagiarizing what the AI summarized from the internet.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

I agreed because violence is a necessary evil during a revolution. Historically and currently, in countries where democracy isn’t followed, the ruling party will usually resort to violence because they do not care about the public’s opinion. All they care about is holding onto their power, and they will go to any lengths to preserve it.

Core Competency Reflection 

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I start by breaking the ice and have a small conversation with the person so we can get comfortable with each other and than I start talking about the assignment we have to do.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include checking the sources, checking the context the information was written in and going through multiple sources to make sure the information is correct.

My Movie

Plot, Character, Setting, and Mood

· Explain how you figured out what your Avatar would look like.

I figured out what my avatar would look like by taking inspiration from the few lines in the book referencing the physical features of the characters in the book. Also, I had a few mental snapshots of what characters looked like by reading how they talked.

· How did you choose the plot points?

I chose the plot points by reading the book and going through the most important parts a few times over to find the plot point that started the chain of events leading to the book’s climax.

· Explain how you figured out the setting in your story. Why is the setting significant to the story?

I found the book’s setting because it was talked about multiple times throughout the book, and the starting chapters explained the most prevalent setting. The setting is significant to the story because it sets the mood, era, theme of the book, etc.

· Explain what the word mood means and how/why you picked the song that you picked?

The word mood means how they feel in a certain situation or the type of situation that the characters are in. I picked the song I picked because the book was fast-paced and had a lot of action and excitement in it.

Core Competency Reflection

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by speaking in simpler words or explaining my words better while engaging in meaningful conversations with my peers.

This is how I select images and words to create an impact for different audiences: By reading the page over and over again and imagining to myself what words would impact me the most if I were the reader reading it for the first time. Pictures are similar I look up multiple pictures online and compare them to see which picture would strike me the most as a reader.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take a break and go outside for a walk or eat a little snack to help myself forget about work for a little bit and come back energized and focused.
