Image Critique #4

This is a photo I took for my Story in Three Frames assignment. I was very proud of taking this photo because it is so clear and there is barely any movement from the ball, which was captured at just the right moment due to the high shutter speed. This image is slightly underexposed, and there is contrast from the orange hoop and basketball, against the blue sky. Colour theory was used because both blue and orange are complimentary colours, meaning they stand out when put together. When editing this photo, I lowered the exposure to make it less bright and it almost feels like you’re playing basketball on a hot, sunny day, wearing sunglasses due to the lowered exposure. Hard lighting has been applied because it was very sunny outside and the sun naturally cast hard shadows, which is visible on the bottom of the basketball. Although this photo is nearly perfect, it does have some technical and compositional weaknesses. While editing the photo in Adobe Lightroom, the scratches and marks on the backboard of the basketball hoop could have been removed using the eraser tool. I also wish that the shutter speed was a bit higher because when you look closely, there is slight blur from the movement of the ball, and if there was completely no blur it would’ve improved this image a lot. To improve upon these weaknesses, I would have to increase the shutter speed, and either lower the aperture or increase the ISO because this photo was shot in manual mode. I could also edit the photo and remove the imperfections and marks on the backboard, but that isn’t as necessary because they add character to the photo and keep it looking natural. Overall, I am very proud of taking this photo because of I captured the perfect moment of the ball going into the hoop, and because the image is so clear and the colours look nice together.
