Year-End Music Concert
Curricular Competencies Reflection
Through the year-end concert, I was able to improve my clarinet and performance skills. By playing harder songs such as The Beatles, I was able to improve my fluency and speed of hitting notes. By performing, I was also able to practice playing in front of an audience, some of which would help with stage fright. However, I also identified some areas for improvement. Many of the songs for this concert had sections where the same note would be played for many bars. Unfortunately, I suck at tonguing on a clarinet, which is a skill that would make it easier to play (and would produce a better sound) than my current method, which is to straight-up blow every note. So, an area of improvement would be to work on my tonguing skills. I could also work on trying not to mess up during performances, which is probably due to nervousness. In the future, I’m planning on possibly joining Musical Theatre as a part of the sound crew (not very music-related, but I could also help out at concerts I suppose?) if I have enough time next year.
Core Competencies Reflection
In this performance, I demonstrated the Communication Core Competency. During rehearsals, when I didn’t know the rhythm or “flow” of a certain piece, I’d ask my friends for help. Likewise, I’d also help them if they needed help, whether that was in setup/take down in rehearsals or running through certain sections with them. For next time, I could improve upon my communication skills by using a nicer tone instead of giving one-word answers all the time.
