Lab 19c: Core Competency Self-Assessment
Collaboration
During our chemistry lab, I demonstrated my ability to collaborate effectively with my lab partner to achieve our common goal, of determining the estimated value for the Ksp of PbI2 under certain conditions. Throughout the experiment, we tried our best to delegate the tasks evenly. Communication was crucial in this lab to prevent errors and ensure accuracy throughout the lab. By effectively communicating and coordinating our efforts, we were able to work as a team and successfully complete the experiment in a timely and efficient manner. After the lab procedure, my lab partner and I both reviewed each other’s answers to ensure we got the same results and even asked other group members to double check that we got the same numbers.
Core Competency Self-Assessment
Collaborating
In the fetal pig dissection lab. I can work with others to achieve a goal. I always ensured that I did my part in the goal that we were assigned. I tried my best to make the jobs equal between each partner. When cutting the pig with the scalpel, we took turns when we had the chance so it was fair between each other because when my group and I would dissect certain areas of the pig, we would get quite grossed out at times. So, we would fill in right away to get the task done to as best as our abilities, without any conflicts between one another. At one point, one of my partners had made a mistake of cutting the throat area too deep which had messed up some parts of identifying parts around this area.
Personal Awareness and Responsibility
Next, I can persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning and behavior. When cutting around the throat area, one of my partners did not realize how deep to cut during this point which caused it to be a bit difficult to identify specific parts around this area. But my group and I tried our best to work around this issue by asking questions and trying to recognize each section by using the resources provided for this lab.
Critical and Reflective Thinking
I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches. During this lab, I tried to use the materials that were recommended to benefit us so then we could do the lab successfully as best as we could. We tried to make sure that we checked the pig diagrams of the specific area we were cutting, like the internal and external diagrams with the parts labelled. Then, during this lab I would ask my classmates around me to make sure we were on the right track and ensuring we were dissecting the correct area as well as looking for the right organs of the pig.
Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment
For my second sewing project, I think I followed the core competency Personal awareness and responsibility. To celebrate an accomplishment such as making a shirt that I have never made before, I take pride and feel accomplished for what I have created to the best of my abilities. I appreciate feedback on what needs to be fixed and what the next steps to make the shirt and prefer it comes in the form of simple and clear steps that I am am able to follow and perhaps as a visual, showing me what I need to do. I also think I used this core competency by being able to fix things for a second time. For this project, I had made a first set of sleeves that did not fit well on me. So I had to make another pair, one with lining. I was able to make them fit well and look nice on me in the end.
Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Reflection
What core competencies did I demonstrate with the Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder PowerPoint Assignment?
- For this assignment, one of the core competencies I demonstrated was communicating, more specifically I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. For my presentation, I think I did a decent job trying my best to keep it full of information that was needed but also trying to keep it short so then I can explain my learning of this topic when doing the presentation. My presentation was neat and tidy while answering the questions that were needed to be answered. Another core competency I demonstrated was personal awareness and responsibility. I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself. After presenting, there were some things that I realized during and after my presentation for things I could fix or improve. For example, some slides I had could have been improved as they were tied together in some points and were a bit repetitive. But I still was proud of the final result I had displayed and presented and was proud of myself for this whole project that I worked hard on.
Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment
For my first sewing project, I think I demonstrated many core competencies but I think I mainly showed that I use my creative, critical & reflective thinking while doing making my skirt. I demonstrated that I can form new ideas to create new things. When looking for ideas for what to make for my first ever sewing project, I looked on Pinterest to broaden my ideas. I found that I was interested in making a mid length skirt with an elastic waist that I plan on adding pockets to later on, to make it look like a cargo skirt. I can also build on the ideas of others. One thing that showed this is how I am able to take inspiration of gathered ideas from others and change them to fit what I want. Lastly, I can ask open-ended questions to gather information. As this was my first ever project using a sewing machine, I found that I had some trouble and things that I worried about, but I found that I always asked for help when needed if I got stuck on what the next step was.
Social Psychology Monopoly Assignment Reflection
When working on this project, I demonstrated core competencies, collaborating and communicating. As I was not working on this project alone, I tried my best to work on this project so then we both had something to do and it was an equal group assignment. I demonstrated that I work with others to achieve a goal and also that I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.
IDS Inquiry Reflection
- What is your Inquiry Question? Has the focus of your inquiry shifted or changed since you wrote your Personal Learning Plan? Explain.
- How can we help homeless youth in our community? What kind of issues lead to homelessness? -explore racism, mental health, homophobia, using Leadership group: Cent helping youth as an avenue to share learning.
- The focus for my IDS project has not shifted because I am passionate about this issue that is in our community and want to do something beneficial to homeless youth to where I am looking forward to continuing this leadership group/organization until next year.
- How is your time management? Are you using CENT time weekly to work on your Inquiry, or are you finding other time during the week?
- I feel my time management could improve as I have classes that are study and work based. I need to learn new ways to manage my time and studying better. As well as finishing my IDS assignments on time and completing everything that is required on the assignment. For example, in CENT Time I sometimes use it as a study block for my other classes but that is something that I will work on throughout the semester.
- What resources (people, websites, apps, videos, etc.) have been most helpful?
- In February, I think my Leadership teachers have been most helpful with my group’s project and goals to help homeless youth. They help us when we need resources for events like if we need permission to use the grills, the cotton candy machine, etc.
- What challenges are you currently facing with your Inquiry? What challenges have you overcome?
- First, a time where all 7 of us in our group can meet with each other and discuss what we need to be done and ask about. Second, time management. Third, making sure that we want to be completed. For example, we want to post information about the statistics of homeless youth on our Instagram, but we have not had the time.
- Describe your growth of a Core Competency through this inquiry process.
- Social awareness and responsibility:
- How will you share what you have been learning, creating or planning in this Inquiry?
- Not sure yet… probably a presentation with a lot of pictures and descriptions of me and my group’s journey along the school year.
- Are you on track to share your learning by the end of May or early June?
- Yes, I think I am on track to share my learning by the end of May or early June.
- Will you continue working on this Inquiry, or parts of it, for your Capstone next year?
- Yes, I will continue being a part of Cent Helping Youth, my leadership group that is related to my IDS project until next year. I am passionate about this topic and want to raise as much money as we can to homeless youth (Covenant House)
Research Assignment Reflection
First, I think the core competency I demonstrated when doing this Research assignment is communication. For majority of this assignment as a group, we had to collaborate our ideas and our thoughts for what we wanted to research and test our hypothesis. I think we all did well finalizing what five questions we wanted on our survey and what tasks we would do separately by ourselves. I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. In every assignment I do, I try my best to do my share or part in the group to make sure that we get something done and achieve a good mark. I never want people that I am grouped with to feel that they are doing most of the work when in group work, it should be equal and fair to everyone. The next core competency that I demonstrated is my thinking skills. I give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals. In my group, my task was to do the final hypothesis and procedure. I did my part on trying to be as thorough and detailed for each step to get a clear idea of how we achieved our hypothesis and our final results.
French 11 Movie Posters
For one of our chapters we had learned for French 11, we learned about movies, plays, etc. For our project we had to do, we made a movie poster. Me and my partner made a movie poster on the infamous “Wizards of Oz,” not only a movie but a musical. Me and my partner demonstrated communication throughout our project and managed to make a good looking homemade poster together. We collaborated well together planning out what our roles separately are to achieve a nice ending product. I think we both did our parts to make the poster together and stepped in ideas for what we could add to the poster to make it look as best as we could.
Titrations
Titration is a neutralization reaction that goes through a special process. It is a technique used to precisely determine the molar concentration of an unknown solution using a known solution. In this lab, titrations was used to find the volume of NaOH (the base) used to be neutralized with HCl. The endpoint of an acid-base titration, the number of moles of the acid is the same number of moles as your base. When slowly adding your indicator (phenolphthalein) by tiny drops into solution and it changing colours, is when you know you have reached the endpoint. In our lab, we knew we reached the endpoint of our lab when the solution stayed a light pink colour for more than 30 seconds while continuously mixing the solution. We reached the endpoint at an average of 14.60ml(+-0.05ml) NaOH in 10.00ml HCl. After doing the titration, we determined that the molarity of HCl was 0.1460M. [HCl] = 0.1460M.
Core Competency Self Assessment:
Communication – I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share
During the lab, I find that my partner and I work well together. We both show communication and collaboration throughout whatever we are doing frankly. At the beginning, we listed what steps were needed for this lab. We both agreed on what roles we needed to achieve separately and completed them. We switched in between roles so we could have a chance or faster end result to our titration. There were some mistakes we both took along the way and it did take four tries for the best light pink colour, but we figured it out in the end and asked for help when we needed it.
