Core Competency Self-Assessment

Collaborating

I demonstrated the Communication core competency during the dichotomous button activity. During this activity, I displayed the sub-category collaborating by working collectively with my partner. This activity required critical thinking skills as well as organization and creativity, so there were a lot of tasks to be done. We decided to separate these tasks amongst ourselves as well as work together in sorting the buttons by colour, shape, and size. My partner and I decided to collaborate by discussing ideas and suggestions while playing active members of the group. I showed collaboration by taking the role of the writer for the dichotomous key while my partner helped organized the buttons and tell me what descriptions I should write. I also took a role in contributing ideas in ways we could have sorted the buttons as well as naming them. My partner and I negotiated respectfully, listening to each other’s ideas and giving suggestions for improving the names of the buttons.

Core Competency Goals

I will be able to boost my mood or re-focus when working

I am the type of person who often struggles on staying on task as I tend to get distracted and bored. I want to set myself the goal of being able to regulate myself as this semester I have some difficult classes such as Chemistry 12 that would require me to focus on my work. To achieve this goal, I will let myself take breaks because I get quickly bored since I try to finish all my work in one sitting, which only results in procrastination. These breaks can involve going outside, calling a friend or playing a quick game.

I want to make sure people feel included and aren’t left out.

I consider myself a person who is quite shy so I struggle in speaking up for myself and others. This semester, I want to have the confidence to be able to include other people. Ways to achieve this goal is by first getting help from my friends as I noticed I am more confident when I’m around them. After gaining more confidence, I can take the next step by doing it by myself. I will try and be more aware of the people around me to notice if anyone is being excluded and take initiative by talking to them or including them in group work.

I want to appreciate feedback on my work and prefer it comes in the form of constructive criticism

When doing work, I often don’t ask for feedback. I become very guarded towards my work and take negative feedback personally, but I want to work on receiving feedback as I understand that it is something that helps improve my work and skills. I want to receive this feedback in the form of constructive criticism. If all the feedback is positive, it is difficult to improve my work, so I would want to have feedback that analyzes my work closely. Ways I can achieve this goal is by reaching out to a peer or friend to look over my work and ask for their feedback. I can also show them the criteria for whatever assignment or project I’m working on as that will help them know what areas to analyze in order to give constructive criticism.

Final Art Piece

For my final art piece, I demonstrated the core competency of communicating. I showed that I can receive and present information by communicating with others. For my piece, I was inspired by one of my friends. I wanted to incorporate parts of my friend’s identity to reflect my piece. This meant acquiring information such as her favourite colours as well as listening to many of her stories and our past memories to think of symbols to put in the art piece. I then presented the information I gathered by implementing components in my piece. I put green, yellow, and pinks for the background to represent her favourite colour, and I added two lemon vines as early in our friendship, I had gifted her a notebook with lemons. I interpreted the information gathered from communicating with my friend to then apply them to my piece.

Romeo and Juliet Morality

There are many themes of morality displayed in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. One of the prevalent ideas Shakespeare presents in his play is how revenge and long-standing grudges result in destruction. This is illustrated by the Montagues and Capulets’ grudge against each other. The two families despise each other for years and their grudge against each other continues to play out during the events of Romeo and Juliet. Therefore, this results in many terrible events occurring such as the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. Tybalt had challenged Romeo to duel, but Mercutio fought him instead. This duel was fuelled by Tybalt’s grudge against Romeo who had attended a Capulet party, despite being a Montague. After Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo seeks revenge and kills Tybalt in retaliation. The deaths of these two characters cause grievance for everyone as well as increase the animosity between the two families. Another example of this theme would be the love between Romeo and Juliet. Due to their families’ rivalry, they aren’t allowed to be together which makes them hide their relationship. After Romeo is banished, this causes Juliet to create a plan to run away with her lover but instead, the plan fails and results in the lovers’ deaths. Because of the long-standing grudge, anguish and destruction were cast upon everyone as they grieved for Romeo and Juliet. If any of the characters were to let go of their grudges, the numerous amounts of deaths could have been avoided. This theme can apply in a real-life situation as it teaches me to let go of the grudges I have against people as holding onto insignificant matters can lead to problems. Hatred can rise from grudges which can affect the relationship between friends, family, and even strangers. Additionally, it is a lesson to society as if people seek out revenge, it will continue the continuous history of grudges and lead to more destruction. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet teaches us that we should let go of our grudges in order to steer away from unnecessary and trivial conflict.

Racism Within Canada Regarding To Kill A Mockingbird

The topic of racism is a prevalent issue within Canadian society. Racism is a serious problem that affects the minorities living in the country. Within Canada, many minority groups, especially the Asian community, are affected by racism. A major reason for this derives from the racism emerging due to the pandemic outbreak. Because the coronavirus originated in China, the stereotypical belief is that all people who are Chinese or who appear to look Chinese carry the virus and are at fault for the pandemic. This is a serious issue as these harmful stereotypes are inaccurate and many people in Canada are continuing to support and contribute to these damaging beliefs. As a result of these prejudiced beliefs, minorities are getting attacked which is the reason racism is a significant issue in Canada. Throughout the pandemic, there have been an extensive amount of hate crimes occurring in the United States; however, these acts of aggression are not limited there as they have also been transpiring in Canada. Thousands of Asians, including myself, have been attacked by Canadians who are supposed to be allies, not aggressors. From my experience, a man has chased me and my sister off a Skytrain with vicious threats to beat and harm us. These kinds of situations are inexcusable as a country like Canada should not be dealing with hostile acts like those. Furthermore, in that situation no one stepped up to aid us and instead disregarded the situation, choosing ignorance instead of justice. Regarding the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, my opinion of racism has become more knowledgeable and clearer. Racism is a complicated topic, but it does not mean to avoid it. Similar to my experience, Helen Robinson was harassed by Mr. Ewell due to the man’s vengeful motives that are fuelled by racism. Although these situations are less severe than the other intense crimes people have done against minorities such as beating, kicking, or murdering, it is still part of the issue. Mr. Ewell is the paradigm of a racist and uneducated citizen. There are many citizens in Canada like Mr. Ewell who chose to use their perceived superiority over minorities, but society continues to ignore these issues. Racism has been illustrated in To Kill a Mockingbird and has affected my view on it and although it is something that is impossible to completely erase, Canadians should strive in creating a better society to live in.

Titration

Curricular Competency Explanation

A titration is a technique used to determine the unknown concentration of a substance. This is done by reacting a titrant and analyte in which the analyte is the substance with an unknown concentration. In this lab, a titration was used to determine the molarity of the acid in a neutralization reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. NaOH whose molarity is 0.100M was added to an Erlenmeyer flask filled with HCl whose molarity was unknown. Drops of NaOH were added and because of the indicator phenolphthalein added to HCl, the solution turned pink which indicated the base and acid reacting. The endpoint of a titration is shown through the colour change of the indicator and it is when the moles of acid is equal to the moles of the base. The colour of the indicator will show the point where the titrant and analyte (NaOH and HCl) have completely reacted together. The end of the titration for this lab can be indicated when the colour of the solution remains the lightest shade of pink for 30 seconds. The results for this lab were done in four trials where trial 2 and trial 4’s data were used to come up with an average volume of NaOH which was 14.35ml. Converted into moles gives 0.00144mol which can be used to calculate the moles of HCl which is 0.00144mol. With this given data, the concentration of HCl is 0.144M.

Core Competency Explanation

In this lab, I demonstrated the communication core competency. I specifically demonstrated the collaborating sub-category where I was able to work collectively with my lab partner. We both collaborated in putting our best effort towards executing and completing the lab. We split up responsibilities to where I was in charge of the set-up of the buret and base while my partner was in charge of the set-up of the acid and pipette. I can also be conscientious about contributing as any time I was finished with my responsibilities, I always asked if there was anything else I could do such as clean-up or assistance. I can also negotiate respectfully and clearly with my partner. An example of this is when we had to do a fourth trial as the data for our third trial didn’t match up with our first and rough trial. We discussed several errors that could have occurred and discussed different actions we should do for the fourth trial to ensure success. Finally, I demonstrated cooperation and interdependence. My partner and I agree on cleaning up our lab space together as well as trusting that we are both doing our responsibilities to the best of our abilities.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Collaborating in CLE 10

The artifact I chose to represent my Collaboration Competency is the brainstorming interview worksheet. In this activity, we had to brainstorm ways in getting ready for an interview. While working on this activity, I demonstrated collaborative skills by supporting group interactions and working collectively as a class. During the activity, we had to share our ideas on a collective document the teacher had and I could value the different perspectives and ideas my classmates had. I listened actively as we took turns discussing. Before sharing, I also discussed with some of my peers where we listened to each others’ ideas and shared common answers. We contributed to each other’s ideas to soon have stronger ideas that we could share with the rest of the class. This skill is important in everyday life as you are constantly working with other people in your life so being able to communicate and work together with them is a valuable asset to have. This skill can be applied to everyday life such as when you’re working on projects in school or a job.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Social Awareness and Responsibility in CLE 10

This artifact represents how I demonstrated one of the facets of Social Awareness and Responsibility, Contributing to the community and caring for the environment, in my Career Life class. For this assignment, I had to answer the questions given independently to then work collaboratively with a group. I had to be responsible for making sure my reflections were well-thought-out as my answers would impact my group’s performance. A challenge I faced when working on this was not rushing my answers. However, I was aware that it wouldn’t benefit my group so I finished my reflection well so later I can discuss it with my group members. Another challenge was discussing my answers with my group members since it involved a lot of discussions and listening to other peoples’ opinions. Once we finished, we were able to contribute to our classroom community with our answers.

My Model Town

Creating a Model Factory Town

Name of the town: Windwoods

Company Name: Willows

Resources available: Coal, minerals, lumber, crops, and cotton

Elements of the town: Spruce forest, mountains, lake, farms, mills, mines, housing, and dock

Population: 231

Explanation / Brief History: In 1798, Fredrick Willows along with his group of explorers discovered the land filled with mountains and trees. They were a wealthy group that placed their settlement there and began to create a larger town where jobs could be easily gained in the mines, mills, and farms. Fredrick named the town Windwoods due to the land’s large spruce forest and fresh winds that breezed during the spring. The work was tedious and harsh, but you’d be paid fairly as well as have access to cheap housing. Eventually, the population continues to increase as more factories are being built and foreigners start to travel to Windwoods for its accessible jobs, however, housing prices increased.

Media Fluency Reflection

A. How was the ease of access in building the town, and what software did you use specifically?

The software I used is called Inkarnate which is a program that allows users to create fantasy maps. I am quite familiar with using Inkarnate and had access to an account so it wasn’t too difficult to use. The program did limit my creativity, however, as I didn’t have the full membership. I couldn’t access some of the tools and stamps that could have added much more detail to the final result.

B. Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?

Before creating my design, I listed what I wanted in the factory town then sketched it out on paper. This made it easier to create on the program as I had a guide to where each building would be. If I didn’t plan ahead, I would probably be very lost and take more time on the program.

C. What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” town?

I used a source from Khan Academy to research resources that were prevalent in the Industrial Revolution such as coal. I also used the novel Lyddie as a reference when creating the town as I remember how the setting of the book included many tall buildings. I gathered inspiration from pictures online as well as a place called Oldham which used to be a factory town. Additionally, I used facts I learned in my classes such as housing becoming expensive due to the overpopulation in cities.

D. Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Explain.

I think Minecraft could have been a better software to use as the details and intricacy you can put into the buildings you create bring out a level of realism to the project. It’s very easy to use as well once you’ve gotten the hang of it, and it takes about an hour or two to create a satisfactory build. I think that the software I used limited the smaller details that could have been done in Minecraft.
